9 How does it work? Eligible Researcher applies with Eligible Host Organisation in a MS/AC

10 Eligible Researchers 1 Are Experienced Researchers (PhD or Degree* plus 4 years of research experience, e.g. Medical Doctors, Research Assistants) 2 Have not benefitted from a Reintegration or Career Integration Grant under FP6 or FP7 3 Comply with the Mobility Rule (Not residing / having their main activity in country of the host organisation for > 12 months in the last 3 years)** * The degree that would allow you to begin PhD studies in either the country in which the degree was awarded or the country where the proposed CIG fellowship would be hosted. ** Possible to apply with current host organisation, as long as Mobility Rule is observed.

12 What is the EU funding Contribution? Flat Rate of 25,000 per annum For up to 48 months Linked to duration of the award, e.g. the EU Contribution is 100,000 for a 48-month award, 87,500 for a 42 month award Allocated on the principle of co-financing Intended to support the project costs in global terms Not intended to cover 100% of the cost of integrating the researcher The host institution is bound* to contribute to the overall costs of the project * Articles 109 and 113 of the Financial Regulation for FP7

13 What can the EU Contribution be spent on? Should be used for the benefit of the researcher, to improve the conditions for establishing themselves in a permanent research career in Europe Examples of eligible costs: Contribution towards Salary Research costs (consumables, materials etc.) Travel (conferences, collaborations etc.) Life-long training and career development (training courses etc.) Part/full cost of a research student or postdoc

14 Who is a CIG award suitable for? The awardee must have an employment contract to cover at least the duration of the award, therefore the award is suitable for: Researchers (postdoctoral and equivalent*) New Academic Staff * c.f. EU definition of Experienced Researcher, slide 10

25 B5: Ethical Issues Ethics is considered essential by the Commission in the research activities that it funds or carries out The Commission will not fund: 1. Research on Human Embryo/Foetus In proposals where the following are involved, the Commission may carry out their own ethical review: 2. Research on Humans 3. Privacy 4. Research on Animals 5. Research Involving Developing Countries 6. Dual Use (possibly military or terrorist use) Every funding application must include a completed Ethical Issues Table (see page 44 of the GfA) The table is divided into sections using the 6 headings above Indicating ethical issues in the table does not automatically lead to an ethical review it helps the Evaluators to decide if one is needed

26 Hints for a successful proposal Follow the Guide for Applicants-address all issues mentioned in the explanatory notes Make life easy for the Evaluators -stick to the proposal structure suggested in the Guide for Applicants (Annex 4). Can download a template from EPSS Use standard Work Packages approach to structure the project. Be concise and observe the page limit: 21 pages(11pt, at least 15mm margins on all sides) excluding: Start & end pages Table of contents Curriculum Vitae Ethical issues section Bibliography 26

27 Hints for a successful proposal Pay attention to the Policy Context of Marie Curie (2012 Work Programme and the opening pages of GfA) This is an Integration grant need to convince the Evaluators that you will be integrated into a more stable research career in Europe via this award. Don t ignore complementary skills training if your host has this training in-house, say so! Ask the HR department. Has your host endorsed the Charter & Code if yes, say so! List at Is your host working towards earning the HR Excellence in Research logo? If yes, say so! See slide 24 for details of Irish HEIs currently participating. Note, this list is not exhaustive ask your host if they are participating.

28 Hints for a successful proposal Get a colleague to read through your proposal and do a mock evaluation -ask your Research Officer to put you in contact with CIG/RG awardees at your host organisation. If in doubt, ask your Research Officer or National Contact Point for clarification! If you want to avail of a pre-submission proposal check by your host, allow enough time for feedback. Regularly upload preliminary versions of your proposal, and don t forget to hit submit! Keep the deadline -5pm Brussels time means 4pm Irish time!!
