1 IT Tallaght RESEARCH NEWLETTER 24 th February 2017 NEWS UPATE Joao Crastes an Erasmus MSc Biomedical engineering student from Universidad Nova De Lisboa (Lisbon), Lisbon is being hosted by the CREATE Research Centre, housed with the Centre of Applied Science for Health, from end January to June to work on neurotransmitters and biomarkers for brain injury. The Institute has signed a hosting agreement with University of Sousse Tunisia for doctoral research internships for two PhD students to travel here and work in CREATE laboratories in the CASH building from April through June. IT Tallaght students take all the prizes at the DIT Postgraduate Research Day on Feb 16th Jessica Kelch, won the best speaker award for her excellent delivery of Development of an Impedimetric Immunosensor for Progesterone based on Redox-active Steroid Derivatives - travel bursary worth 1000 Camilo Mendes de Menezes won best poster for his project The Development of Early Non-Invasive and Reliable Molecular Biomarkers of Pregnancy in Dairy Cattle - travel bursary 750 They both did the college and the research team of Prof. Eithne Dempsey proud and I want to acknowledge their hard work in preparation for this event. Both projects are funded under SFI Investigator Awards and collaborate with UCD and Teagasc. End of an era...eu Marie Curie IRSES 4 year project entitled SMARTCANCERSENS led and co-ordinated by Prof. Eithne Dempsey. It was a complex project to the tune of almost half a million euro, involving allocation across the planet to 9 partner institutions, supporting almost 300 person months of mobility over 4 years. It also involved the organisation and financial management of three international conferences/workshops for project dissemination, which was led by the Research Office and Finance personnel at IT Tallaght. This project represents the largest consortium of this type to be ever co-ordinated by Ireland. Scientific outputs were really impressive with 101 peer reviewed collaborative publications over the period and 20 in press, and 89 conference proceedings. Humanities and Business Research news - On Feb 16 th last the National Centre for Franco-Irish Studies held a peer reviewed Postgraduate Research Day, organised by Drs. Eamon Maher and Brian Murphy. Papers were presented on photography & literature, and the new rise in beverage tourism perspectives and branding impact. The conference also included some results from practice-led research Masters Projects. External assessors included Dr. Justin Carville, IADT and Prof. Andrew Auge, Loras College, Iowa, USA.

2 FUNDING NEWS & UPDATES Call for transnational research projects within the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR) DEADLINE: The pre-proposal submission deadline is March 21st, 2017 (17:00, CET) The full proposal submission deadline is July 4th, 2017 (17.00, CET) PARNTER SEARCH TOOL: Applicants are also invited to use the Partner Search Tool (access through the link above), a development facilitating matches between potential partners with similar ideas. It gives the opportunity to express interest either in joining a research proposal or to search for partner(s) for an existing proposal. Career-FIT: Career Development Fellowships in the National Technology Centre Programme ENTERPRISE IRELAND invites applicants to its new Marie Skłodowska-Curie cofunded trans-national programme that offers an opportunity for experienced researchers to develop their careers in market focused applied research in Ireland s Technology Centres, with an enterprise secondment (of 6-12 months in an Enterprise Ireland client company) during the Fellowship (of 36 months). Career-FIT is a postdoctoral fellowship programme, part-funded by Horizon 2020 and part funded by Enterprise Ireland. A key feature of Career-FIT is the opportunity for experienced researchers from outside Ireland to develop their careers in market focused applied research through 3 year fellowships with secondment into industry through Ireland s Technology Centres. There will be two calls under the Career-FIT programme. The first call has an application deadline of 31 March The second call will open in There will be 25 fellowships awarded in each call. EU Update on Calls and Consultations on Research A Flash Call Info has been published in the Horizon 2020 space Biobased Industries Joint Undertaking Call will open in April and close in September 2017.

3 Anti-Microbial Resistance There is an ongoing EU initiative to examine anti-microbial resistance. As part of this there is an open Public Consultation on possible activities under a 'Commission Communication on a One Health Action Plan to support Member States in the fights against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Check out the link here to take part FUNDING CALLS SFI OPEN CURRENTLY SFI DISCOVER PROGRAMME SCIENCE WEEK CALL 2017 Science Foundation Ireland, through its education and public engagement programme, seeks to promote the awareness and engagement of the Irish public with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Science Foundation Ireland is the national coordinator of Science Week which will take place from 12th to 19th November The purpose of this call is to provide funding for the organisation and management of regional Science Week festivals, events and a Dublin Open Day to ensure that there is a variety of events around the country for the public to attend. Deadline for proposal submission: 15th March 2017 at US-IRELAND R&D PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMME IN THE LAST MAILSHOT ON RESEARCH NEWS STILL OPEN.. No deadline published SFI CALLS COMING SOON Industry fellowships These fund collaborative industry-academia research projects through the temporary movement of Irish academic researchers who wish to spend time in industry worldwide, and industry researchers anywhere in the world who wish to spend time at an academic institution in Ireland. Maximum award: 100,000 Deadlines in the second and fourth quarter of 2017 Investigators programme This supports research projects in areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics that support enterprise competitiveness and social development in Ireland.

4 Grants are worth between 400,000 and 2 million for duration of four to five years. Deadlines in fourth quarter of 2017 President of Ireland future research leaders programme The call is open to applicants who are three to 15 years post PhD, based outside of Ireland, or who have been recruited from overseas within two years of the expression of interest deadline. Funding is worth up to 1 million for up to five years, plus a 250,000 for start-up costs. Deadlines in second quarter of 2017 SFI/EI technology innovation development award This supports researchers at the initial stages of developing a new technology, product, process or service with strong commercial potential. Maximum award: 100,000 for one year. Deadlines in second quarter of 2017 Spokes programme fixed call This fosters partnerships across academia and industry to address crucial research questions, foster the development of new technology companies, attract industry that could make contributions to Ireland and its economy, and expand educational and career opportunities in science and engineering in Ireland. SFI would particularly like to attract proposals in the area of advanced manufacturing to develop additional capacity and support the manufacturing industry in Ireland. Starting investigator research grant This supports researchers who are yet to hold an independent research post in taking the initial steps towards a fully independent research career. Applicants must be senior authors of at least three primary research articles in international peer-reviewed publications. The grant is worth up to 400,000 for direct costs over a period of four years. The next call is expected to open in the third quarter of 2017 and to close in the first quarter of BBSRC/SFI joint research funding (with Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, UK)

5 Principal applicants must be resident in the UK and hold an academic staff appointment, at the lecturer level or equivalent, at a higher education institution, research council institute or a BBSRC-approved research organisation. Irish co-investigators must be based at a must be members of the academic staff of the supporting HEI. A maximum request of 500,000 in direct costs will apply to the ROI budget. Deadline sometime in 2017, no clear idea of which quarter as yet SFI INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMME ADVANCE NOTICE: SFI- NSFC PARTNERSHIP 2017 The first call for proposals under the programme is in partnership with the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). It will strategically fund excellent and innovative projects in priority areas of relevance to both the Republic of Ireland and to the People s Republic of China. Proposals submitted to the programme will include a joint collaborative programme of research prepared by a leading academic in Ireland alongside a leading academic partner based in China. The SFI-NSFC Partnership awards represent funding of significant scale, but as yet the figure is unknown, whereby SFI funds the research activities and team based in Ireland and the NSFC funds the research activities in China. SFI will manage the international peer review evaluation of proposals, but both sites prepare submissions. This evaluation process will combine postal and panel review stages, both carried out by international experts. An applicant based in the Republic of Ireland will be permitted to request between 500,000 and 1,000,000 direct costs from SFI to fund the research activities in Ireland. Applicants based in China should consult the NSFC webpage for details on the budget for the activities to be carried out in China. The award duration is four years.
