We look back at in a report to IUCN Council, and look ahead to in our Strategic Plan and Mandate. Plus an invitation to join an "All CEC Member" gathering. CEC prepares for IUCN World Conservation Congress CEC Chair Reports to IUCN Council on This report by the CEC Chair, Keith Wheeler, summarizes four years of progress in the World Conservation Learning Network (WCLN); Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA); and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Our New Mandate Emerges from the Strategic Planning Process Careful and creative input over many months has contributed to the mandate of the Commission on Education and Communication, which is shared here with CEC members in "draft" form. IUCN CEC Strategic Plan This 25-page document is a DRAFT on its way for approval at the World Conservation Congress in Barcelona in October. It is a plan for strategic communication, learning and knowledge management for the next four years. 4 Sophie Jakowska Honored with Dominican Republic Postage Stamps In memory of a longtime CEC member, five stamps recognize her ecological endeavors. They feature her ortrait and her children s book illustrations of a crocodile, manatee, flamingo and parrot. Conservation International Presents its Centers for Biodiversity Conservation In the late 1990s, site-by-site conservation could not keep pace with intense pressures to biodiversity. A big-picture approach was needed. CI has roadtested the CBC concept for 5 years and now reports on progress. From Andrea Margit of CI. Communicating Disasters: New Asian book revisits Tsunami s communication lessons CEC member Nalaka Gunawardene of TVE Asia Pacific announces the release of regional book that takes a critical look at the communication lessons of the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004, and explores the role of communications before, during, after.
5 Education and Training Seminars on Facilitating Multi-stakeholder Dialogue: Germany and South Africa The Collective Leadership Institute is offering two-part seminars in Potsdam starting 14 March and in Cape Town starting 11 April. Curso Latino Americano de Biologia da Conservação From Brazil, CEC member Suzana Padua shares this announcement of a course at the Instituto de Pesquisas Ecologicas. The course runs 4 November to 3 December Certificate Course in Sustainable Environmental Management Offered by Beahrs at Berkeley Apply by 15 February for the June 2008 course. Each year 40 mid-career professionals attend the 3-week course by the Beahrs Environmental Leadership Program, University of California.
