CEC prepares for IUCN World Conservation Congress CEC Chair Reports to IUCN Council on This report by the CEC Chair, Keith Wheeler, summarizes four years of progress in the World Conservation Learning Network (WCLN); Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA); and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Our New Mandate Emerges from the Strategic Planning Process Careful and creative input over many months has contributed to the mandate of the Commission on Education and Communication, which is shared here with CEC members in "draft" form. IUCN CEC Strategic Plan This 25-page document is a DRAFT on its way for approval at the World Conservation Congress in Barcelona in October. It is a plan for strategic communication, learning and knowledge management for the next four years. 4 Sophie Jakowska Honored with Dominican Republic Postage Stamps In memory of a longtime CEC member, five stamps recognize her ecological endeavors. They feature her ortrait and her children s book illustrations of a crocodile, manatee, flamingo and parrot. Grupo Iberoamericano de Discusión en Educación Ambiental CEC member Alejandro Alvarez of Venezula is starting a Google Group after his blog Foro Tuqueque. Both focus on environmental education (in Spanish). Full story>> New Video Features Tourism Project in Madagascar Conservation International and the Malagasy NGO Fanamby are helping local communities and businesses generate income from tourism in the Alley of Baobabs. Conservation International Presents its Centers for Biodiversity Conservation In the late 1990s, site-by-site conservation could not keep pace with intense pressures to biodiversity. A big-picture approach was needed. CI has roadtested the CBC concept for 5 years and now reports on progress. From Andrea Margit of CI. Communicating Disasters: New Asian book revisits Tsunami s communication lessons CEC member Nalaka Gunawardene of TVE Asia Pacific announces the release of regional book that takes a critical look at the communication lessons of the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004, and explores the role of communications before, during, after.

5 Education and Training Seminars on Facilitating Multi-stakeholder Dialogue: Germany and South Africa The Collective Leadership Institute is offering two-part seminars in Potsdam starting 14 March and in Cape Town starting 11 April. A news item from Minu Hemmati. "Our dialogic facilitation program is experience-based and focuses on practical application." Curso Latino Americano de Biologia da Conservação From Brazil, CEC member Suzana Padua shares this announcement of a course at the Instituto de Pesquisas Ecologicas. The course runs 4 November to 3 December Certificate Course in Sustainable Environmental Management Offered by Beahrs at Berkeley Apply by 15 February for the June 2008 course. Each year 40 mid-career professionals attend the 3-week course by the Beahrs Environmental Leadership Program, University of California. Full story>> 2008 SEED Awards Call for Submissions SEED welcomes innovative ideas from any group in a developing country that is working in partnership with others to generate environmental and social benefits in an entrepreneurial way. Deadline 16 March Announcing the 2008 Free Range Gratitude Grant Applications are due by 5pm on Thursday, May 1, Free Range Studios announces its 2008 Gratitude Grant program, offering up to $15,000 worth of design and/or strategic communications services for social change makers (like CEC members!).

6 Coming Events Argentina será sede en 2009 del VI Congreso Iberamericano de Educación Ambiental The Republic of Argentina will host the VI Iberoamerican Congress on Environmental Education next year. Senior officials from UNEP and delegates from 33 countries of the region are expected to attend. News from CEC member Joaquim Ramos Pinto. Wildlife Asia Film Festival 2008 Postponed Organizers Chris Dickinson and Cheryl Low regret to announce that Wildlife Asia 2008 has been postponed. The Lion Awards will remain open to entries until 31 August CEEE March 2008: Register Now for the Conference on Environmental Education in Europe Join ESD experts in Malta for "thinking & acting outside the box". This announcement comes from CEC member Chris Maas Geesteranus. Chris is a founding member of the new European ESD- Net, which is organizing the conference.
