Materials Engineering and Processing (MEP) Program Directors: Thomas Kuech, Alexis Lewis, Mary Toney The Materials Engineering and Processing (MEP) program supports fundamental research addressing the processing and/or mechanical performance of engineering materials by investigating the interrelationship of materials processing, structure, properties and/or lifecycle performance for targeted applications
Materials Engineering and Processing (MEP) Structural Materials and Mechanics (SMM) Materials Processing and Manufacturing (MPM) Materials Engineering and Processing (MEP) Materials and Surface Engineering (MSE) Effective September 1, 2013
Materials Engineering and Processing (MEP) Processing Proposed research should focus on manufacturing processes that convert material into useful form as either intermediate or final composition All material systems Performance Proposed research should be driven by a targeted application(s) Mechanical or multifunctional (not electronic) performance Structural, functional and responsive materials Surface engineering, tribology Corrosion and degradation Length scales from molecular to macro
Mechanics of Materials and Structures (MoMS) Program Director: Kara Peters Search Underway for second PD Advances in theory, experimental, and/or computational methods in mechanics Using contemporary mechanics to address challenges in materials and structures Deformation, fatigue, fracture, contact and friction Integration of materials and structure: metamaterials, hierarchical, microarchitected and low-dimensional materials
Design of Engineering Materials Systems (DEMS) Program Directors: Kara Peters (Mechanics of Materials and Structures), TBD (Engineering & Systems Design, Systems Science), Mary Toney (Materials Engineering and Processing) The Design of Engineering Material Systems (DEMS) program supports fundamental research intended to lead to new paradigms of design, development, and insertion of advanced engineering material systems. Fundamental research that develops and creatively integrates theory, processing/manufacturing, data/informatics, experimental, and/or computational approaches with rigorous engineering design principles, approaches, and tools to enable the accelerated design and development of materials is welcome.
Nanomanufacturing Program Director: Khershed Cooper Nanoscale process scalability, throughput, reliability and affordability Integration of top-down, bottom-up processes Incorporation of nanomaterials and nanostructures into higher order structures
Other CMMI Programs Advanced Manufacturing Cluster Mechanics & Materials Engineering & Engineering Materials Processing Cluster Systems Manufacturing Machines Mechanics of Materials Engineering & & Equipment & Structures Design Cluster Resilient & Sustainable Nanomanufacturing Infrastructures Cluster Design of Engineering Engineering & Systems Materials Systems Design Civil Infrastructure Systems Biomechanics and Systems Science Geotechnical Engineering Mechanobiology Service, Manufacturing & Structural & Architectural Operations Research Engineering & Materials Dynamics, Controls & Engineering for Natural Diagnostics Hazards Infrastructure Management & Extreme Events

NSF Solicitations Three types of solicitations (1) PIs submit to the solicitation (ie MIP, DMREF) solicitation has separate deadline, budget may have special submission requirements (2) PIs submit to a standing program which participates in the solicitation examples: GOALI, SusCHEM proposals are reviewed with other unsolicited proposals must align with topic of program usually no separate pot of funds (3) PIs submit to solicitation with a participating program (ie CAREER) special solicitation requirements separate deadline and budget guidelines submitted to an NSF program; must align with topic of program
DMREF NSF s Response to and participation in the Materials Genome Initiative
DMREF Solicitation Details NSF Solicitation Lead Program Director: John Schlueter (DMR) Submission Window Date(s): January 4-19, 2016 DMREF is the primary program by which NSF participates in the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) for Global Competitiveness. MGI recognizes the importance of materials science to the well-being and advancement of society and aims to "deploy advanced materials at least twice as fast as possible today, at a fraction of the cost. Three or four year awards totaling $750,000 1,600,000 for the award period are anticipated. Total funds $29M (FY16)
DMREF Solicitation Special Review Criteria Theory, computation and experiment guiding one another in an iterative loop Open access to data and codes Solicitation PI Requirements Must be collaborative (at least 2 PIs) An individual can be a PI or co-pi on only one DMREF proposal per window
Materials Innovation Platforms (MIP) NSF Solicitation Program Directors: Sean Jones and Guebre Tessema Midscale user facility program MIPs push the frontiers in materials research by advancing the capabilities of current state-of-the-art experimental tools through the development of new techniques and the next generation of instrumentation that will lead to understanding and discovering new phenomena as well as the discovery of complex functional material systems. In addition, it is expected that open access to these cutting edge tools will strengthen collaborations among scientists and enable researchers to work in new ways, while fostering new modalities of multidisciplinary education and training. The initial MIPs will focus on developing new bulk and thin film crystalline hard materials. 5 year awards, $10M - $25M First round in FY15, Next solicitation in FY17-18
Other NSF Solicitations and opportunities* *not a complete list
Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program NSF The CAREER program embodies NSF s commitment to encourage faculty and academic institutions to value and support the integration of research and education. Creative, integrative and effective research and education plans, while building a firm foundation for a lifetime of contributions to research, education and their integration. Submit to the relevant NSF Program (ie directly to MEP) July submission, $500k, 5 years. PhD, tenure track, 3 attempts only.
Grant Opportunities for Academic Liaison with Industry (GOALI) NSF Industry/Academia partnerships NSF funds cannot go to an industry partner; they can only be used by the academic institution. The industry partner is expected to participate in the research effort to facilitate in the commercialization of the research. Submit to a program (MEP) or solicitation (DMREF) which accepts GOALI proposals Proposals are reviewed alongside other (non-goali) proposals submitted in the same window Reviewers are instructed to evaluate the quality of the industrial partner s participation
Computation and Data Enabled Science & Engineering (CDS&E) NSF Goal: To identify and capitalize on opportunities for major scientific and engineering breakthroughs through new computational and data analysis approaches. Outcomes must rely on advancement of both research and infrastructure in computation and data. All NSF Directorates Participate Deadlines differ for each Division; check solicitation for submission windows
Integrated NSF Support Promoting Interdisciplinary Research and Education (INSPIRE) NSF Complementing existing NSF efforts, INSPIRE was created to handle proposals whose: Scientific advances lie outside the scope of a single program or discipline. Lines of research promise transformational advances. Prospective discoveries reside at the interfaces of disciplinary boundaries that may not be recognized through traditional review or co-review. Proposals in response to this Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) may be submitted after August 01, A maximum budget of $1 million applies. Duration may be up to 5 years. Must get at least two PDs to support.
Facilitating Research at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions: Research in Undergraduate Institutions (RUI) and Research Opportunity Awards (ROA) NSF Solicitation Research Opportunity Awards (ROAs) Research Opportunity Awards (ROAs) are typically used to enable faculty members at PUIs to pursue research as visiting scientists with NSF-supported investigators at other institutions. Typical ROA awards are for up to $80,000 for periods of two to 12 months. Awarded as supplements to existing grants. Approximately 45 in Submit any time talk to your PD.
Other Funding Opportunities Individual projects (unsolicited) Special Solicitations Instrumentation MRI awards, equipment supplements Fellowships, traineeships, research assistantships, post-doctoral funding - NRT Centers (Research and Education) Small Business Innovation (SBIR, STTR) International Collaboration Workshops and Conferences
