Social Value Activities 2016
Socially responsible business Canon believes that considering the interests of society and the environment is an integral part of good business practice and this is embodied in its corporate philosophy Kyosei - living and working together for the common good. We aim to fulfil our corporate social responsibilities to all our stakeholders. Our Kyosei philosophy is our vision for all people, regardless of race, politics, gender, ability, religion or culture to live and work together in harmony. This includes: Respecting our customers Guiding our employees Supporting the communities where we operate Reducing our impacts on the natural environment Our stakeholders range from investors, NGOs and customers,to local communities, our employees and suppliers. We have responsibilities to each group and work to fulfil their expectations and our obligations to them. We help our employees understand their role in supporting the business as we strive to operate fairly and ethically, while promoting sustainable economic growth.
Employability skills Since 2012 we have been running an Employability Skills Programme in partnership with East Lothian Council, now running in three East Lothian schools; Knox Academy, Ross High School and Dunbar Grammar School. Strongly backed by both the Chief Executive of ELC and the Managing Director of Canon UK, the programme supports two of the Scottish Governments key initiatives Developing Scotland s Young Workforce and Community Benefits and Economic Growth. The Employability Skills Programme helps the students build skills essential to prepare them for future employment, such as confidence and motivation, CV preparation, presentation and communication skills, mock interviews and team work. They also learn how to identify and maximise their transferable skills. Apprenticeships 2015 saw the launch of the Canon UK & Ireland Apprenticeship Programme. These programmes also form part of our talent management strategy for the future and will enable us to influence positively the lives of young people as well as the longer term demographic of our workforce. Apprenticeships are also a way for us to develop our own employees who are specifically Canon trained and to add to our current resourcing methods in a challenging marketplace. We are currently working towards the delivery of a number of apprenticeships schemes across the business and are working with both academic and commercial providers as partners in delivering the schemes. All programmes have 2 elements, the first based on knowledge, which is delivered by the college or other provider, and the second, is competency based and is assessed by an externally verifier in the workplace which focuses on real live experience. Field Service This is our first scheme and we have appointed 4 apprentices (2 in London/SE and 2 in Scotland). One of the Scotland apprentices will work on the Fife County Council account. The programme will last for 12 months and we are partnering with Highbury College in Portsmouth where the apprentices will spend 8 of their first 16 weeks at college gaining a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in ICT Systems and Principles. This will then be complemented by the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Professional Competence for IT and Telecoms Professionals. During the year the apprentices will spend time learning on the job, will be supported by their mentor as well as training delivered by Technical Training and experience other areas of the Services and support business to enable them to understand their role in context.
Education Canon has developed links with a number of schools and universities. Our links include attending open days to talk about working at Canon; running competitions such as sales challenge, and mentoring. We also provide work experience and internships where practicable. Canon has been supporting the Exeter University One Planet MBA for a few years now including supporting students who wish to base their dissertation topic on an industry or business issue. Community We engage with organisations, individuals and communities where we operate helping tackle social and health issues and promoting wealth and income creation. We invest in regional and local projects and bring our corporate social responsibility activities to life in the communities we depend on. Local Support Canon is a major employer and we have forged links with education bodies such as schools and universities. Employees may go into schools to speak about work, the environment and other topics. Our offices and employees engage in a variety of projects with local charities and organisations, offering sponsorship, donations and in-kind support. We contribute at national and local level to sports, the arts and culture. Employee volunteering As local residents themselves, our employees know what support is needed in their local communities. They volunteer their own time and efforts to support a wide variety of causes and activities ranging from sponsored runs to environmental clean-ups. We have volunteering guidelines for managers and employees across the region, to encourage participation in an appropriate and businessfocused way and maximise our support. National Citizen Service (NCS) NCS aims to bring together young people from all different backgrounds in a common purpose. Offering new experiences and specifically for year olds, it gives them the chance to take on new challenges, learn new skills and meet new people. This helps discover their own talents and realise their potential whilst having fun. Through NCS, schools, community organisations, businesses and individuals are brought together to build a stronger and more cohesive society. NCS is a government-funded initiative that supports community engagement, social action and social mixing among young people.
Ethical procurement Canon has a global green procurement policy and is also working to address issues around conflict minerals. We comply fully with the ILO guidelines and are committed to producing product that is manufactured and distributed in an ethical way, including compliance with human rights and anti-slavery and trafficking legislation. Environmental sustainability Canon has global certification for ISO Our products are designed to use fewer resources and to be energy efficient in use, saving our customers money and reducing our environmental impact. We are members of the United Nations Global Compact and we are working with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation on how we can contribute to the circular economy. Some of our products are remanufactured or recycled at our own facilities and we ensure any end of life equipment is reused or recycled correctly. Project Home 2025 Canon has supported research into Home 2025, a project organised with The Climate Group. The study looks into the potential carbon reduction possible at the level of the home through more mobile and home working patterns, which reduce the need for office space and commuting. Results so far indicate that significant reductions may be achieved through the introduction of new technology and influenced by new business models and demographic change. Canon facilitates this transition to mobile & home working and related carbon reductions through its technology and solutions for mobile and remote working. Ethical employment Canon ensures that its employees are treated fairly and ethically and we comply with all legislation. Partnerships and Relationships Red Cross In the UK, Positive Images is an initiative helping the Red Cross to better the lives of vulnerable children across Europe. Positive Images is an educational programme that challenges the stereotypes that many young people have about asylum seekers and refugees living in the UK. By helping to change negative perceptions, the programme encourages young people to take a more humanitarian outlook of the world around them, while working towards a more inclusive and harmonious community.
Creative Media Camp 2015 Canon Young Creators Under a partnership between Canon and the Ideas Foundation 30 students aged years, who are interested in creative industries, took part in an exciting five-day creative media camp. Their task was to: Tell us what the future of imaging will be like. How will young people like you capture and share moments that matter? Create a concept for a new start-up based on this idea. Canon brought in creative industry professionals to mentor and inspire the students as they built up their ideas, and provided equipment to help them design, film and prepare their ideas for presentation. Each day included workshops and activities to help the students to pitch their ideas to the judges on the final day. The final work of the students was a great success. The opportunity these talented students received during the camp to work closely with industry professionals helps them grow their skills and possibly consider a career path into the creative industry. This matches with Canon s aim to continue supporting young and talented people to reach their full potential. Canon offered young creators at selected UK schools and colleges the chance to learn about telling stories using the power of images, in a continuous learning process between March and July 2015, ending with a finals event at Canon in July. Organised in collaboration with the Ideas Foundation, Canon sent both employee volunteers and creative industry professionals into schools to talk to students and give them advice. Students worked in groups or individually to tell a story about one of the following and think about how they would share the story with their target audience: An experience in your home city that inspires you; Someone that has affected your life in a positive way; Something that annoys you and you wish you could put right. Out of 130 students, 20 students in nine groups were shortlisted to present at the finals event. Judges included Nigel Taylor European Corporate and Marketing Communications Director, and Simeon Quarrie professional photographer and Canon Explorer. The students delighted the judges by delivering amazing ideas and smart use of images. The winning group came from Great Yarmouth high school and their story was about raising awareness about domestic violence faced by teenage girls.
