2 Income streams What are the sources of income for your Centre? Federal government? State government? Local government? Fee-for-service programs? Philanthropic funds? Donations?

3 Increasing funds Your centre can increase its income and therefore its positive impact in the community by: Applying for grants from philanthropic trusts/foundations and corporations Accepting donations from individuals and small businesses.

5 The fundraising landscape Increasing income through philanthropic trusts/foundations and corporations as well as individuals can be difficult because: Some philanthropic trusts/ foundations and corporations will only grant funds to not-for-profit organisations with deductible gift recipient (DGR) status. Many individuals and small businesses prefer to donate to not-for-profit organisations with DGR status. This is because monies donated can be deducted from their taxable income which means they pay less tax.

6 This meant that Centres needed to have Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status in their own right to: Receive tax deductible donations from individuals and businesses and Apply for funds from philanthropic trusts/foundations and corporations.

7 And then along came the ANHCA Public Fund for DGR Centres no longer need to have DGR status in their own right to apply for funds from philanthropic trusts/foundations and corporations and receive tax deductible donations! Instead, Centres can use the ANHCA Public Fund for DGR as a vehicle to accept tax deductible donations ($100 or over) or apply for grants from philanthropic foundations/trusts and corporations requiring DGR (deductible gift recipient) tax status.

9 Is your Centre eligible? Be an organisation (as opposed to an individual) Be a financial member of the relevant State Peak Body (in WA, this means Linkwest) Be a legal entity i.e. an incorporated body If the organisation is a network or peak body rather than a Centre in its own right, it must apply funds to furthering or supporting the work of Centres Not have DGR status.

10 Is your Centre eligible? The ANHCA Public Fund for DGR can legally only direct funds to other entities in furtherance of the purposes in ANHCA s constitution. These are to: Contribute to national policy and issues of common interest to the Neighbourhood House and Centre sector in Australia Promote and strengthen the national identity of the Neighbourhood House and Centre sector in Australia Enhance the quality, skills and knowledge of the Neighbourhood House and Centre sector in Australia Support the activity and work of the Neighbourhood House and Centre sector in Australia. This means that ANHCA can accept funds and direct them for the work carried out by Neighbourhood Houses and Centres, including project-based support and general support.

11 Be able to receive tax deductible donations Apply now! Fill out the form titled Form: apply for general donations. and return to Once this form is submitted and approved, your Centre can receive tax deductible donations of $100 or more.

13 Case study: general donations The $2,000 donated helped to purchase crockery, a toaster and other equipment for the community kitchen. Over 875 three course meals have been served by 7 volunteers since last July.

14 Case study: general donations San Remo Neighbourhood Centre, NSW Without the ANHCA Public Fund for DGR, we could not establish our community restaurant. It provides meals to members of the community who are financially disadvantaged, have mental health issues and/or an intellectual or physical disability, said Jillian, Centre Manager. The process of applying to the ANHCA Public Fund for DGR was so simple. The forms were easy and we were able to secure the funds within 48 hours.

16 Case study: philanthropic trusts/foundations and corporations Railway Neighbourhood House, VIC Railway Neighbourhood House, VIC received funding from the Victorian Women's Benevolent Trust to continue the weekly homework club for young people of refugee background.

17 Case study: philanthropic trusts/foundations and corporations Bellarine Living and Learning Centre, VIC Received $24,000 from the Geelong Community Foundation for the Connections in the Community project. The aims of the project are to: Engage and connect new participants into BLLC Build capacity of BLLC to manage the ever increasing participant engagement and new/existing program numbers.
