4 What is Grants.gov? A simple, unified electronic storefront for interactions between grant applicants and the Federal agencies that manage grant funds. Encompasses over 1,000 grant programs offered by the 26 Federal grant-making agencies. Vision: to produce a simple, unified source to electronically find, apply and manage grant opportunities.

5 Grants.gov Registration Principal Investigators DO NOT have to register on Grants.gov. The School of Public Health is already registered. However, if you are applying for an NIH grant, you will need to have an era Commons username. If you do not have a username or cannot remember it, please contact Veronica at novoave@umdnj.edu.

6 Downloading PureEdge Viewer (for Windows Users) If you have not already done so, please download PureEdge Viewer onto your computer by going to: Note: PureEdge Viewer is required in order to open and complete the application package.

21 Downloading Citrix Server for Non-Windows Users A free Citrix server is available to remotely launch a Windows session and submit completed grant applications for Non-Windows users. For more details and to download the Citrix Package for Macintosh OS please go to: software.jsp#citrixnonwindow

34 This is the grant application. Please make sure to save it to your computer or flash drive. You will receive a warning message each time you save until all required data is entered into the forms. When you have completed a form, please move it over to the right hand column.

35 NIH Investigator-Initiated Initiated Research NIH is committed to investigator- initiated research and want your unsolicited applications. Since all applications must be submitted in response to a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) NIH has created Parent FOA s s for unsolicited applications. Parent FOA s s can be found at

37 Completing the Application Please go to the ORSP website cfm?unitid=12 to view the pre-filled sample of the SF424(R&R) form. For detailed information on how to fill out the electronic forms, please go to 24/index.htm and download the Grants.gov Application Guide.

39 Internal Requirements for Electronic Submission ORSP requires the completed proposal 4 business days prior to the deadline. The following forms must be filled out and given to ORSP with the completed application package: GAFA- Must be filled out and signed by the PI, their Department Chair, and the Grants & Contracts Manager (Anthony Mayo), before being given to ORSP for Dr. Paulson s s signature and final submission. Assurances by PI Form-ORSP must be given the original form filled out, signed and dated by the PI. This form is currently required for all NIH applications and is strongly recommended by ORSP for all other federal applications. Financial Disclosure Form (FDF)-All personnel on the application MUST sign, check yes or no for items to disclose, and date the FDF. For faculty members, their department chair must also sign. If you check yes for items to disclose, you MUST fill out page 2 of the FDF and get the appropriate signatures at the bottom of the page. The Assurances by PI Form and the Financial Disclosure Forms can be obtained from the ORSP webpage: The GAFA can be obtained from either ORSP or the Office of Business and Finance.

40 Getting your Application to ORSP for Submission Once you have saved your completed application and checked for errors, you are ready to get the application to ORSP for Submission. There are two ways of getting your application to ORSP: 1) the completed PureEdge Application Package to Veronica Due to file size constraints, please the package through the UMDNJ Large File Transfer Service (LIFT). Please go to for more information on LIFT. 2) Bring the completed application on a CD or flash drive to the ORSP Office at Liberty Plaza, 335 George Street, Suite 3700 in New Brunswick. Note: ORSP must receive the internal forms mentioned in the previous slide before submitting the application electronically. Therefore, it would be best to bring the completed application package on a flash drive or CD at the same time that the internal forms are given to ORSP.

41 What Happens Once ORSP Receives the Application? ORSP will review and approve the application for submission. As required by the federal government, an ORSP grant administrator, not the PI will then submit the application to Grants.gov.

42 Why Does ORSP Need at Least 4 Business Days? It is imperative that you submit the final version of the application to ORSP 4 business days before the deadline to ensure that there is enough time to correct any errors, if the application bounces back. Once the ORSP grant administrator submits the application to Grants.gov, it can take up to 2 days to get the confirmation that the application has been either accepted and validated or requires corrections.

43 Extra Verification Step for NIH Applications Once Grants.gov accepts and validates the NIH application, they forward the application to era Commons for verification. The PI will then have 2 business days to review the image of the application on era Commons and check for errors (e.g. incorrect information, missing or garbled text, etc). If there are any errors, then the PI would decide to either correct the errors or stop the application from going forward. Please note that only the Signing Official (Dr. Paulson), not the PI can stop the application from going forward. Therefore the PI would have to notify ORSP as soon as possible if they wanted to stop the application. After the 2 business days have elapsed, the submitted application is finalized and no further electronic changes can be made.

44 What if my NIH Application Needs to be Corrected? If you need to make a correction to your NIH application within the 2 business day verification period, you have to: Make the correction(s) on the PureEdge application package that was originally submitted Please ask ORSP for the application package that was originally submitted Send to ORSP for resubmission ORSP will then do the following: Review and approve the resubmitted application Check off Changed/Corrected Application on the SF424(R&R) form and type in the Grants.gov tracking number that was given to the original submission so that Grants.gov and NIH know that this resubmission is replacing the first one.
