2 Before You Get Started Download the current version of Adobe Reader You MAY need a PDF Writer (e.g., Adobe Acrobat) Make sure you have an NIH Commons Username Remember, there is NO logon for Grants.gov! Notify your Inst. 3 Font Format Specs for PDF Attachments Arial, Garamond, Georgia, Helvetica, Palatino Linotype, Times New Roman or Verdana 11 point font or larger Margins (8 1/2 x 11 paper) ½ inch margins all around No Headers or Footers Figures, Graphs, Charts, etc. Can be smaller font Must be black font, clear and legible No Jargon Download the Program Announcement Open the F-KIOSK page Choose your Opportunity Choose most current version (FORMS-D) Open and Review Program Announcement (PA) Other Requirements Download Instructions Download application or open in ASSIST 3

Identify the Program contact and specifics on funding limits per Institute. Click on the grey Apply box Institute Specific Information Check for your specific Institute to find Program Contacts and other pertinent information 5

6 Instruction Guide Be sure you have the right version of the instructions! Most of the instructions to complete your application are in the F200 though the F600 Sections of the Guide. Keep the guide open as you complete your application. Use bookmarks to navigate between sections. Grant Application Package The Grant Application Package is one file Forms have data fields and attachments Always download the most current instruction guide! See Samples and Instructions in your handout A few words about PDFs Attachments required to be PDF No spaces, characters, etc. in name Use a one word format: e.g., SpecificAims.pdf, JonesBiosketch.pdf, SmithResearchPlan.pdf Convert to PDF (do not scan) Don t add extra security to your PDF! Do not add headers and footers 6

7 Grant Application Package As you work on the application, click Save and Release Lock frequently! Complete the application using the instructions attached to that particular FOA (Funding Opportunity Announcement) Always use a new application for each grant An old Application Package can be copied in ASSIST (e.g., for a resubmission) When application is complete, click Validate Application button Update Submission Status to Ready for Submission Do not select Submit Application button Institutional Rep will use it when they submit Let s Complete the Application Open your ASSIST Application. We ll complete the SF424R&R form together, and answer some of the administrative questions about the other forms as we go through the package. Use the sample in your handout to guide you, but ALWAYS read the NIH instructions. 7

Referee enters their information (they do not need a Commons username) Example: SMITH.JOHN SMITH PA Referee enters information about YOU be sure they have this information and clicks continue Route Application Update Submission Status to Ready for Submission at least 5 business days before the deadline Your Inst. Rep. will review and submit the completed application School of Medicine: Debra Porzio All Others: Your OSR Contract/Grant Officer Be sure your PDRF and all other required forms are complete at this time 9

Agency Retrieval Upon validation, notifies Sponsor Retrieves application from Grants.gov Sends to IR: Validations Complete/Check assembled application (or ACTION REQUIRED). 10
