1 INNOVATION TO ACTION PATENT PENDING

2 I2A AWARDS I2A will expand students entrepreneurship experiences to include STEM innovation as a career alternative. They will also be encouraged to understand the patent process. There will be two tracks available: 1 Website or Mobile App Development 2 Physical Prototyping (this can include 3D Printing) The competition for all participants will run from Aug 31 through Dec 9, The Finalists phase will then run until February 6, 2016.

3 I2A AWARDS Winners and Runners- Up will benefit from scholarships to Miami Dade College s MarketHack, CS50, and MAGIC courses, as well as from learning to use 3D printers and web or mobile app development tools and resources. Additionally, I2A will provide teachers a development seminar on 3D Printing & Prototyping and Mobile App Development to supplement their students efforts. This seminar will count for professional development points. Teachers will also be awarded a special recognition for having completed the seminar and for participating in I2A Patent Pending. The program hinges around: innovation for problem solving prototyping storytelling

4 INNOVATION Students must solve a problem using a usage/behavior based approach. They should not focus on demographics only. PROTOTYPING Teams may submit either a web or mobile app or a physical prototype (could be 3D printed). They will be expected to include a tech report and schematics design. STORYTELLING Teams must submit a powerpoint presentation describing their new business and product.

5 I2A PARTICIPATION CATEGORIES A B C Highschool: Seniors & Juniors Highschool: Sophomores & Freshmen Middleschool: 6th, 7th, 8th grade Each school will send as many teams as they deem pertinent per category, with 2-5 members in any given team. Finalists announced on Dec 9, per category, 12 total Winners and Runners- Up announced on Feb 6, total

7 PHASE 1: MAKE YOUR JOB Each team must complete the Make Your Job application process to register. This will be the team s core business plan. It can be completed in 1-2 class periods. We will provide the rules and guidelines for registration to I2A

8 PHASE 1: MAKE YOUR JOB Teams will work to identify a business opportunity and work through the tiles to complete a basic business plan in just 45 minutes Go to after August 25, 2015 Complete the registration process using your Team Captain s information ONLY. Be sure to select Innovation2Action as your Organization As a team, answer the questions to complete your business plan The completed plan is now entered in for participation in I2A We will provide the rules and guidelines for registration to I2A

9 PHASE 2: PROTOTYPING 1 Teams will be asked to create a prototype of their invention. The prototype does not have to be fully functional. It could be a prototype of a (1) web or mobile app or (2) a physical device. They will have to draw out a draft schematic of the prototype as well. We will provide the restrictions & resources for each track, the prototyping guidelines, and the basics for drawing schematics.

10 PHASE 3: DIFFERENTIATION Teams must identify the 3 most important features or benefits offered by their invention and explain how each will serve the user. They will be asked to highlight at least 1 feature that is unique and that no other competitor currently offers.

11 PHASE 4: VALIDATION Teams must test their invention with at least 5 average users, and validate: 1. Invention s usability 2. How valuable the unique feature is for these users Teams may choose to carry out surveys or interviews. They must clearly record their findings and describe what they learned. They ll be able to refer to a list of market research questions or ask their own. We will provide a list of typical market research questions.

12 PHASE 5: PROTOTYPING 2 Based on their findings, teams will improve their prototype and fine- tune any details. They ll write a technical report to explain how their invention was created and what resources they used. The report will also indicate how the invention is supposed to function if it were fully functional. Also, it should include how the average user should operate the invention. Teams must draw the final schematics. We will provide the guidelines for creating a tech report and schematics.

13 PHASE 6: COST AND PRICE Teams must make a list of all the resources used, including tools, and the cost of each. Based on their market research and the costs associated to making the invention, teams must define the ideal price. They will be asked to justify pricing and show why they decided to price that way. We will provide a simple guideline to figure out contribution margin and breakeven points.

14 POWERPOINT PRESENTATION Each team is required to submit a Powerpoint presentation that includes Phases 1-6. A detailed guideline with the requirements will be provided. Finalists will be expected to improve their presentation for the final competition.

15 PATENT DRAFT A patent draft application must be filled out by finalists only and submitted along with other materials for the February 6 final competition. A detailed guideline will be provided.

16 TEACHERS SEMINAR RECOGNITION Miami Dade College will hold a development seminar for teachers that touches upon web and mobile app development and prototyping. This will include the tools necessary for creating 3D printer- ready prototypes. A special recognition from MDC will be awarded to all participating teachers at the February 6 finals for having completed the seminar, and a letter will be mailed to notify their schools.
