Helpful Hints 1. Brainstorm Think of a project that will engage your students and help them understand a concept better. Make sure your project is innovative, aligned with district goals and doable. Talk to others who may be interested in collaborating on a project. Look for grant ideas online from other education foundations or other resources. 2. Discuss Your Idea Talk to others about your idea to see if it s innovative and aligned with the district. Other teachers, leadership and curriculum coordinators may all have great ideas! 26
Helpful Hints 3. Research Look online for articles that support your project. HINT: Education.com offers free scholarly articles by grade and subject. Create a timeline of your project and what it would take to carry it out. Talk the appropriate people in the district, especially if construction/the facility is involved. 27
Helpful Hints 4. Write! Make a rough draft of your grant in a Word or Google document. SIMPLIFY! Write as though the person reading your grant doesn t know anything about education. Start early! Give yourself plenty of time to get through the grant submission process and to get help from others if you need it. Be succinct. Remember, each section is limited to 800 characters. Use bullet points if possible. 28
Helpful Hints 5. Budget Research materials and cost. Make sure you re getting the best deal for the items you ll need and using approved vendors. Remember, grants are not intended to fund transportation, salary, stipends, or other non-educational expenses. If you can t find an approved vendor, talk to the person who handles purchasing at your school to fill out a new vendor request. 29
Helpful Hints 6. Proofread Recruit others to help you proofread for clarity, grammar and spelling. Double and triple check spelling and punctuation. Grammerly.com can serve as another pair of eyes for free! 7. Turn It In Copy and past your draft into the online application and submit before the deadline. 8. Try Not to Stress! Remember, the Foundation and committee are here to support you. If you are not awarded a grant, don t be upset. Many grant writers apply several times before the perfect the process. 30
