Samaniego Manila Observatory Definitions Grant- a type of assistance (financial) in order to implement/conduct a specific activity or purpose Fellowship a financial grant made to a fellow in a college or university (focus on educational and professional development) Types of grants General purpose or operating support grants can use it to support the general expenses of operating libraries Program or project support grants to support a specific, connected set of activities, from start to finish, explicit objectives and a predetermined cost. Types of grants Study/Training/Internship/Research grants in support to educational and professional development Travel grants to assist an individual to attend a conference or participate in a training program outside his/her country 1

2 Sources of grants Professional organizations Government Cultural institutions Universities/Academic institutions Foundations and non-profit organizations Develop potential projects Potential projects should have well defined objectives and goals Key elements in project development: timeframe, planned activities, and budget Corporations and private institutions Projects should provide opportunities to sustain libraries, its staff and/or its operations Projects should be realistic, justifiable, and allows flexibility if changes are needed! 3 Know potential funding sources for libraries and related fields Check for grant initiatives from both international and local organizations Learn more about the previous projects assisted by these organizations Keywords: Call for Proposals; Call for Papers, Conference bursaries, Scholarships Send Letters of Inquiries (LOI) to funding agencies to determine availabilities of grants Be updated: join mailing lists and professional groups to get updates Most organizations post availability of grants on websites and mailing lists Always have an updated curriculum vitae and sample research papers/abstracts Acquire some training on proposal writing A well written proposal is a key for qualification Follow all instructions and requirements of the funding agency and recognize their supports 3

6 Qualifications Candidates must be a national of Asia and Oceania. Committed letter of application including the title of paper and the session/section to be presented in IFLA and a well presented CV Professional background and experience: level of education, positions held and professional experience in general. Travel, registration fee, accommodation and meals Submission of narrative evaluation of the conference Using Open Access Models for Science Dissemination (7-16 July 2008 ) International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy Full assistance on travel, accommodation, meals and daily allowance Qualifications Scientists and students from all countries which are members of the United Nations, UNESCO or IAEA may attend the activity. Participants must have an adequate working knowledge of English. Although the main purpose of the Centre is to help research workers from developing countries, a limited number of students and post-doctoral scientists from developed countries are also welcome to attend. There is no registration fee to be paid May be requested only by candidates who are nationals of, and working in, a developing country, and who are not more than 45 years old. Limited funds are available for a few participants, to be selected by the Organizers, and who accept to attend the entire activity. 6
