1 CALL TO BROWARD DUANE HANSON ALLIED ARTISTS Call to Artists Governmental Center Door Art Design Broward County Duane Hanson Allied Artists are invited to submit qualifications for an art project in which the selected artist will conduct community engagement activities and design artwork for vinyl wraps which will be applied to doors at the Governmental Center. Background The Cultural Division, through its Public Art & Design program, is seeking applications from eligible Broward County Duane Hanson Allied Artists (eligibility requirements given below). One artist will be selected to design and conduct creative community engagement activities with County staff and thereafter design original artwork for vinyl wraps, to be applied by the County on glass and metal doors in select locations at the Governmental Center. The selected artist s design proposals should reflect and celebrate the Board of County Commissioner s vision (below) and relate to the services that the County provides to its residents as communicated by County staff in the engagement sessions with the artist. The Cultural Division will be responsible for fabrication and installation of the designs. The Broward County Board of County Commissioners envisions: 1. Duane Hanson Allied Artist Award The Duane Hanson Allied Artist Award was established in 1994 and allows mid-career professional artists gain technical and administrative expertise in the field of public art. Mr. Hanson served for many years as a member of the Public Art & Design Committee. 1

Project Description The location for the artist s designs is the Broward County Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301.

2 Project Description The location for the artist s designs is the Broward County Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, Florida There are four locations for artwork including three sets of double glass doors and one metal door with an integrated window. Two sets of double glass doors are located on the third floor of the Governmental Center, in the corridor leading from the building to the parking garage. An additional set of double glass doors is located on the ground floor of the west side of the building. For security reasons, transparency must be maintained on the glass doors and the artwork designs for the glass doors may not be highly colored or complex. Stickers currently applied to the doors for ADA or safety purposes will need to remain on the doors and visible. The Cultural Division will be responsible for hiring the vinyl wrap vendor and overseeing the installation of the designs. At the County s discretion, the designs may be used at other County facilities. The selected artist will be required to conduct two or more creative engagement activities with County staff and the activities will inform the designs. Engagement may include creative dialogues, workshops, structured meetings, charrettes, or any other face-to-face outreach activity envisioned by the artist and approved by the County. Artist Services Interaction with the Cultural Division and County staff are required. Other activities include: Design and conduct a minimum of two community engagement activities with one or more County agencies or group of employees. Create two different design proposals for up to four locations. Review County s vinyl wrap vendor s proofs prior to fabrication and installation. Locations for Artwork Site A. 4 Project Budget The total budget established for the project is not to exceed $2,500. This budget may be divided to provide for one or more separate art projects. The budget includes but is not limited to: attendance at meetings with staff, designs, presentation expenses, community engagement activities, insurance, travel and all applicable taxes. Artist Eligibility This Call to Artists is open to individuals who have been accepted into the County s Duane Hanson Allied Artist pre-screened pool and are residents of Broward County. Artists who have completed a Duane Hanson Allied Artist Award fellowship are not eligible for this opportunity. Anticipated Schedule The selected artist will be expected to begin work within 15 days following full execution of an agreement and Notice to Proceed. Application Deadline: April 6, 2017, 5:00 pm EST How to Apply Eligible Broward County Duane Hanson Allied Artists are invited to apply through Submittable.com. Required submission materials include: Professional Résumé If applicable, include community engagement experience, public art commissions with contact information for Project Manager or Program Director and budget size. Electronic Images Artist may submit up to ten digital images of most recent relevant work. Each image must feature a single work. JPEG format is preferred. Annotated Image List Include name of artist, title of work, year, media, size, and location of artwork, project budget, image number and any other relevant information. Eligibility Please provide the date of the letter you received from the Public Art & Design program indicating that you have been accepted into the Duane Hanson Allied Artist pool. Accept Terms and conditions of the County s agreement and insurance requirements. NOTE: Hard copy materials will not be accepted for this Call to Artists. Application Process and Selection Criteria The Broward Cultural Division manages the application process. An Artist Selection Panel will review the applications. This Panel includes a member of the Public Art & Design Committee, arts professionals, and an agency and community representative. The Panel 4

5 will review the applicant s qualifications and select a shortlist of finalists on the basis of the excellence of past work of similar scope as demonstrated by the visual and other submission materials and the interview, if applicable. The Panel will also consider the versatility and appropriateness of the media in which the applicant has demonstrated proficiency, as it relates to the scope of this project. The County reserves the right not to select any of the applicants or to cancel the project. Commissioned artworks are the result of a dynamic interaction between selected artists and local community and constituent groups during the design phase of each project.
