3 AAAS Congressional/Executive Branch Partner Scientific Society Application Page 3 Does your organization fund scientific/technical research or education initiatives or provide individual research or education grants/scholarships? If yes, please describe. The ASA offers many fellowships, grants, prizes and scholarships ranging from $800 to $50,000 per year. For details, please see: for prizes and for student and international grants. Please detail the source(s) of funding for your organization s Congressional and/or Executive Branch Fellow(s). If the fellowship is named, for example in honor of an individual, please explain the connection and any role of the donor(s) in the fellowship (see the External Funding Policy to ensure compliance). The funding for ASA s share of the AIP/ASA Congressional Science and Engineering Fellowship is provided by ASA s operational fund. It should be noted that ASA had its own Congressional Science and Engineering Fellowship Program in the past ( ). In 2009 the Society decided to re-enter the program by partnering with the American Institute of Physics (AIP), providing about half the fellowship. Explain the mission and structure of your fellowships, including the relationship between your organization and the Fellow (see the Ethics Policy to ensure compliance). The AIP-ASA Fellow provides a scientist or engineer who is a member of one or more AIP member Societies (which includes the Acoustical Society of America) an opportunity to serve a one-year term as a congressional fellow, for the purpose of learning firsthand how scientific and technical expertise can contribute to public policy issues. Describe how your organization recruits and selects Fellows. Please include details on the minimum qualifications, components of the application, criteria that will be used to evaluate applicants, and composition of the selection committee. As discussed above, the ASA has partnered with AIP for a Congressional Science and Engineering Fellowship. AIP s web site explains the application requirements for candidates. The ASA/AIP Congressional Science Selection Committee consists of 5 members, one ex-officio and one recent Congressional Fellow. AIP employs a staff person to coordinate the program. Applications can be found at: Does your organization ascribe to the free-agent concept for Fellows (allowing Fellows to determine their placement of choice, not directing Fellows to any particular office(s) or committee(s), not mandating an emphasis on any particular issues)? Yes Does your organization have a code of ethics for your Fellows? If so, please attach. AIP uses the AAAS code of ethics. Please attach a copy of your fellowship contract or memorandum of agreement (a draft document is acceptable). See Attachment Is your organization an affiliate (through the Executive Office) of AAAS? Yes
4 AAAS Congressional/Executive Branch Partner Scientific Society Application Page 4 If selected as a partner scientific society, will your association/fellowship program agree to abide by the free agent rule and the ethics policies of the AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships (see the AAAS Fellowships website at fellowships.aaas.org)? Yes Will any other organization(s) co-sponsor the fellowships? If so, please provide the name of the organization(s) below. Each co-sponsoring organization must submit a separate partnership application, unless you are an umbrella entity consisting of other scientific societies. If the latter, please list your member societies. As described above, ASA partners with the AIP. If you have any questions please contact Julie Zimmerman at jzimmerm@aaas.org or (202)
