1 LEADERSHIP PROFILE President & CEO Atlanta Habitat for Humanity Atlanta, GA Atlanta Habitat for Humanity partners with working families, sponsors, and communities to build affordable, green, quality homes and to provide support services that promote successful home purchase and ownership. Atlanta Habitat for Humanity s mission THE OPPORTUNITY Atlanta Habitat for Humanity is among the largest Habitat for Humanity affiliates. Founded in 1983, Atlanta Habitat is a $9 million nonprofit that has built and renovated more than 1,360 homes, providing housing and training for over 5,000 members of working families. Atlanta Habitat plays an important role in affordable housing and community development in the city of Atlanta and Fulton County. Each year, qualified working families become first-time homeowners through Atlanta Habitat. Homebuyers attend at least 12 classes, contribute 250 hours of sweat equity, and pay for their homes through a 30-year, no-interest mortgage. The results are life-transforming and sustainable. Atlanta Habitat is poised for next-level success. The board, staff, financials and brand are strong. The organization recently relocated to new, debt-free facilities in Reynoldstown that will enhance efficiency, innovation and growth. CEO Larrie Del Martin, who has led and built the organization over almost two decades, will retire at the end of March 2015.
2 Page 2 of 6 The new CEO has a bold, compelling mandate: To build on Atlanta Habitat s outstanding current work, while broadening the organization s ambitions, scope and impact. The CEO will develop the next strategic plan in partnership with the board. Aspirations include: Expanding impact through innovative approaches that help more working families and neighborhoods attain secure, sustainable housing and financial stability Elevating the organization s role as an integral, sought-after partner and thought leader in Atlanta-area affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization Becoming the flagship domestic affiliate and partner of Habitat for Humanity International Enhancing the organization s efforts to effectively partner with one or more international affiliates Increasing philanthropic and earned revenues At this time of strength and promise, Atlanta Habitat s CEO has the mandate to lead the organization to its next level of success fostering life-changing progress for more working families and communities. THE ORGANIZATION Atlanta Habitat is one of the first domestic affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International. While Atlanta Habitat is an independent nonprofit governed separately from Habitat International, Atlanta Habitat and Habitat International are joined by a mutual covenant defining their common mission. For over 30 years, Atlanta Habitat has served qualified working families, building or renovating over 1,360 homes primarily in the city of Atlanta and Fulton County. Achieving this mission requires
3 Page 3 of 6 expertise and synchronization across six key disciplines: construction, real estate, mortgage servicing, retail sales, education and resource development. Currently, about a third of Atlanta Habitat s $9 million in annual resources are generated by house sponsorships ($3.2M), a third by mortgage and other homeowner payments ($3M), with philanthropic contributions representing about $2M and ReStore contributing $700K in net income annually. During 2014, the organization culminated a $12.75 million capital campaign which raised funds to build the new, debt-free headquarters, supply warehouse and Consumer expert Clark Howard has built over 60 Atlanta Habitat homes. In 2013, AHFH honored the Howards dedication by naming a new Atlanta housing community Howard Point. state-of-the-art homeowner education facilities as well as the adjacent 30,000- square-foot ReStore on five acres in Reynoldstown. Atlanta Habitat homes use green building standards and are energy efficient, protecting the environment and reducing utility bills. House sponsors, including corporations, faith-based organizations and individuals, help subsidize construction costs by providing substantial financial and volunteer support. Families who are first-time homebuyers qualify to build and purchase Atlanta Habitat homes by meeting stringent requirements that include steady income and good credit. Homebuyers invest 250 sweat-equity hours, helping build their own home and other homes and working in Atlanta Habitat s offices, warehouse or ReStore. Families initially take at least 12 education classes, focusing on financial literacy and home maintenance. After leasing their homes for at least a year, they purchase their homes through a 30-year, no-interest mortgage held by Atlanta Habitat. Atlanta Habitat homeowners have a direct impact on their communities. Neighborhoods benefit from the involvement of economically empowered, tax-paying homeowners who maintain
4 Page 4 of 6 their homes and participate in civic activities. Each year, 12,000-15,000 volunteers provide 130,000+ hours of service to Atlanta Habitat s programs and operations. The organization offers numerous volunteer opportunities, including building houses, teaching education classes and serving at the ReStore or in the office. Atlanta corporations and faith-based organizations provide a large percentage of the volunteers and resources. For more information on Atlanta Habitat, visit THE RESPONSIBILITIES Atlanta Habitat for Humanity seeks a President & CEO who is a compelling leader with passion for the mission and the ability to lead the organization to its next level of achievement. The new CEO will be a force in neighborhood development and a driver of growth, innovation and impact. The CEO will: 1. Provide leadership, strategic vision and direction. The CEO will be a magnetic, strategic leader with high aspirations and a vision for growth and mission impact. The CEO will be credible, collaborative and innovative. In partnership with Atlanta Habitat s board and staff, the CEO will develop a long-range strategic plan that shapes the organization and sustainably increases its impact. 2. Elevate profile, community presence and impact. The CEO will be the face of Atlanta Habitat and a sought-after advocate and thought leader in the community. He or she will be gifted at connecting with diverse members of the business, civic, philanthropic and faith communities, and with prospective and current homeowners. Through collaboration and ideas, presence and participation, the CEO will make Atlanta Habitat a central, goto partner for addressing some of the community s greatest challenges. 3. Increase resources for the mission. The CEO will be uncommonly good at building relationships, telling the Atlanta Habitat story and inspiring support for the mission. She or he will grow and diversify the donor base and
5 Page 5 of 6 sources of revenue including earned revenues, public and private funding, corporate and foundation support, philanthropy, planned giving and endowment. 4. Build and diversify partnerships. The CEO will be a natural collaborator who works effectively with Habitat International and other Habitat affiliates, domestically and internationally. The CEO will strengthen existing partnerships and align with new, diverse partners nonprofits, corporations, government, funders and neighborhoods -- to increase positive impact on working families and revitalize neighborhoods in the region. 5. Be a great manager of people and the business. Atlanta Habitat is complex. The CEO will bring acumen in people management, finance and business. She or he will be an effective, participatory and engaging manager of people who delegates, builds the team and empowers staff. The CEO will maintain high standards of fiscal management, transparency and operating excellence. He or she will ensure that the staff is engaged, valued, talented and focused on excellence in the mission. THE CANDIDATE The ideal candidate is a leader with significant results in a complex, relevant organizational context. Passion for the Atlanta Habitat mission, and for the working families it serves, is essential. Knowledge of Atlanta and its neighborhoods is ideal. We are seeking a leader who is: A strategic, visionary leader of mission, growth and impact A people person who is energizing, energetic and magnetic A collaborator who builds partnerships and relationships Comfortable with, and committed to, all forms of diversity Able to lead, inspire, value and empower staff, volunteers and people throughout the Atlanta community A proven fundraiser and manager of the business Innovative and open to new ideas and approaches A clear, persuasive communicator THE RELATIONSHIPS The President & CEO reports to the Board of Directors and manages a staff of 52. The organization works with hundreds of potential homebuyers and
