MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT 2014 is a National Meeting year. We are all feverishly working to finalize the agenda and confirm all of the arrangements. We are now just waiting for the registration forms. This is where you come in. We need each chapter present at the meeting so that we can hear your opinions. We need you there to participate in the debates and vote on behalf of your chapter, if you are the delegate. This is our democratic process at work. I attended my first national meeting in 1992 in Atlanta, GA. I was the delegate for my chapter and three other members attended as guests. It was a little overwhelming walking onto the convention floor with over 150 people in attendance. I was sure that most people knew more about Phi Chi Theta than I did. However, with the help of my Regional Director, I learned my way around the floor and the debates and had an incredible time. The other members of my chapter and I participated in a lot of debate and felt a part of the process. It was a rewarding learning opportunity for us all. Since my first National Meeting, I have only missed one. That was in 1998 in Denver, CO when my first son was born. National President Gary Hodge The National Meeting is a great opportunity for networking and learning. It is also our chance to govern Phi Chi Theta and leave our mark on the national organization. I encourage each and every chapter to send a delegate. Budget early and help support your delegate. Also, send as many guests as you want, collegiate or alumni. All Phi Chi Theta members are welcome to attend. There are no limits on the number of guests that can attend. I look forward to seeing you in Orlando. Fraternally Gary Hodge National President Life Member 3

{CHAPTER NEWS} that the demand far surpassed their availability on campus. University. I knew this was my opportunity to make an impact within the Fisher College of Business and Ohio State as a whole. I was quick to contact Katie and Saundra in order to further understand the next steps in the process both were quick to respond and offer their guidance and immense support and I felt at ease knowing that they were a quick phone call or away. With the 10% acceptance rate the current business fraternities currently hold and the large student body that makes up the Fisher College of Business, it was evident that a chapter of Phi Chi Theta could thrive at The Ohio State From the very beginning, our timeline was very time sensitive and demanding because we had goals of being installed prior to Spring Semester 2014 the entire National Council was more than accommodating in helping to make that happen. PHI CHI THETA WELCOMES ZETA NU AT OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY The Zeta Nu Chapter s first inaugural year at The Ohio State University is coming to a close as the end of April approaches however, our journey has only just begun. While we were not installed as an official chapter until December 8, 2013, our journey began in September After seeing a prodigious desire within a number of highly motivated and extremely qualified students to be a part of a professional business fraternity, I quickly realized From left to right: Nick Foy, Tommy Weston, Olivia Conrad, Sierra Martin, David Cho, Harry Pan, Rob Hovland, Carmen Sabella, Jerry Yang, Cody Laux, Michael Feng, David Lim, Sherry Wang, Rachael Leonard, Katie Barger, Anne Scowden, Meg Guo, Rona Jiang, Kristin George, Jayna Wolfe, Michelle Hu, Alecia Frankart, Katie Hostler, Emily Hagenmair, Tracy Emery. 5 {CHAPTER NEWS} Not only did the Zeta Nu founding members put in significant time and effort in order to successfully charter a chapter of PCT, but Katie, Saundra and the other National Officers did as well. For that, I would like to personally extend a sincere thank you from all of the members of the Zeta Nu Chapter. Initially I thought the biggest challenge in starting a chapter of Phi Chi Theta would be in the accumulation of a strong, dedicated, driven and enthusiastic group of leaders to help contribute to the founding of Zeta Nu. Fortunately, this was not the case. I was lucky enough to have Emily Hagenmaier, a peer and great friend, as Vice President and current acting President in my absence this semester due to an out of state internship. Together, I believe we make a dynamic team and I believe this partnership contributed vastly to the success of the Zeta Nu Chapter. However, I believe the tremendous success we have experienced in founding a chapter at The Ohio State University and in our first semester operating as the Zeta Nu Chapter of Phi Chi Theta was undoubtedly due to a collective collaboration among all of the founding members. Through the course of this semester and last, I have seen my brothers step into leadership roles and utilize their valuable skills and qualities to build Phi Chi Theta. In return, as members of PCT, we are able to emerge our skills for endless possibilities that will be presented to us in the world of business. The executive board, those that possess leadership roles and the general members of the Zeta Nu Chapter collectively shared the responsibility of developing an active semester that fostered the foundations of Phi Chi Theta, professionalism, philanthropy, sisterhood and brotherhood. In our first operational semester, the Zeta Nu Chapter has successfully produced recruitment, the pledging process, two big/little reveals, multiple professional, fundraising, philanthropic and social events, a networking opportunity with the Miami University chapter of PCT, and initiation. Some of our most advantageous events were our Yankee Candle Fundraising event, the breadth of professional speakers Zeta Nu hosted, and the welcoming of 10 new members to the Zeta Nu Chapter. One of our greatest successes as a chapter has been in becoming a Fisher Recognized student Below are Zeta Nu chapter members celebrating. organization. The Zeta Nu Chapter of Phi Chi Theta obtaining recognition within the Fisher College of Business in our first operative semester only begins to 5

{CHAPTER NEWS} demonstrate what this chapter expects the future to bring. Phi Chi Theta has presented myself and the members of Zeta Nu with an abundance of opportunities. Already, my experiences as the Founding President of Phi Chi Theta Professional Business and Economics Fraternity have far surpassed my expectations of what this fraternity could bring to my peers, brothers and I. We have a continually growing network of brothers, sisters, peers, and professionals, an organization that will support and help develop business students and members to reach their full potential and a landscape that will present us with endless opportunities. Phi Chi Theta has allowed a number of students from very diverse backgrounds come together to achieve a collective goal: to establish Phi Chi Theta as a leading business fraternity in the renowned Fisher College of Business and as the Zeta Nu Chapter experiences a multitude of future endeavors, we will continue to do just that. 7 {CHAPTER NEWS} DELTA CHI CAREER FAIR Delta Chi Chapter representing the Western Region holds a biannual Business, IT, and SAP career fair for all students to attend. Each year Delta Chi appoints a marketing director and logistics director to work side by side with the College of Business and Career Center to implement a successful event. This year our Career Fair Directors were seniors Alexis Bkhitar and Sulie Garcia. They did an exceptional job at preparing the chapter for the day s event. This included tabling, promotional posters, and assigning positions for students to work the event. SPEAKER KIMBERLY FLOSS VISITS DELTA CHI Kimberly Foss is a well distinguished Phi Chi Theta Delta Chi alumnus. Ms. Foss is the founder of Empyrion Wealth Management and the author of Wealthy By Design, a NY Times Best Seller. Kimberly Foss is often seen on Fox News, Goodmorning America, Forbes, CNBC, and Market Watch where she shares her financial knowledge and insight about the industry. She generously donated copies of her book to our membership to read and share, and then came to Chico State in February and spoke for the students. Our career fair directors also put together resume books for each company that compiles our member s resumes, thus providing an edge for our members. Every semester over 70 recruiters from various companies and industries attend and return year after year because of the high quality of students. Some of the companies who attend repeatedly are Workday, Gallo, HP, DHL, Southern Wine and Spirits, Chevron, and many more. This career fair helps members improve networking and interview skills, and a majority of members walk away with at least one job offer. By: Sierra Delorefice Chicarino & Marissa Arruda Hearing Kimberly speak was a great way to get students engaged and motivated about their financial knowledge and future. Delta Chi is eager to continue to strengthen their bond with Ms. Foss and continue to build strong relationships with alumni. 7

{CHAPTER NEWS} GAMMA IOTA CELEBRATES FOUNDERS' DAY On March 13, 2014, the Gamma Iota and the Denver Alumni chapters gathered at the University of Colorado Denver to celebrate Founders' Day. There were about 22 people in attendance for the taco and nacho dinner, including Mary Ellen Lewis, one of the longest active members of Phi Chi Theta. The night started out with introductions and then the dinner, followed by the Coat of Arms Ceremony with the original ceremonial Coat of Arms. Afterward, there was a shortened candlelight vigil, in which we remembered each of the founders in turn. Mary Ellen mentioned that she knew Anna E. Hall personally when she first became a member. Mary Ellen was remembrance for more reasons than one. Not only were members celebrating the founding of the national chapter, they were also celebrating the founding of the Gamma Iota chapter. The true meaning of Founders' Day was fully appreciated by everyone in attendance. Missy Bolin President Denver Alumni Chapter Photo of Anna E. 10 {CHAPTER NEWS} ALPHA IOTA PARTICIPATES IN THON Each year, the Alpha Iota chapter of Phi Chi Theta participates in the Penn State Dance Marathon (THON), a 46 hour no sitting, no sleeping dance marathon, where student volunteers show their support by taking a stand against cancer. We fundraise all year long and maintain supportive relationships with children and families affected by pediatric cancer. This year, THON 2014 took place the weekend of February 21st 23rd, and our chapter got to celebrate our year long efforts with our THON family, the Atterberry's. Our THON child, Savion had a blast tossing a football around, having water gun fights, cheering us on and dancing with us in the stands. The mission of THON is to conquer pediatric cancer through outstanding emotional and financial support to the children, families, researchers, and staff of The Four Diamonds Fund located at Penn State Hershey Children s Hospital. THON is the largest student run philanthropy in the world, powered by 15,000+ student volunteers across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. THON has raised over $101 million since its inception. The Four Diamonds Fund provides the ability to offset the costs of cancer treatment not covered by insurance, taking the pressure off the families. Additionally, the Fund hires world class medical specialists as part of its cancer fighting team, including child life specialists, and clinical nutritionists. The Fund has also established multiple research 10

{CHAPTER NEWS} endowments that impact children across the nation, including a research program that will allow for Phase I and Phase II clinical trials, bringing us one step closer to a cure. It is this type of care and research that has ranked Penn State Hershey Children s Hospital one of the best in the country for cancer care by the U.S. News & World Report Best Children s Hospital Rankings. Thanks to THON s donors, we are making a difference in the lives of children and families, taking more steps towards a cure! 14 {OFFICER SPOTLIGHT} Mary Ellen Lewis Who do you work for/what is your position? I am presently retired from the University of Colorado Denver, where I spent 31 years as an Administrative Officer, in the School of Business. While there I was the Advisor for Gamma Iota. Where are you from? Denver, Colorado Where did you attend college? University of Denver (Bachelor of Science Business Administration 1959) University of Colorado (Master of Public Administration 1985) What is your favorite thing to do on your day off? Read mysteries, bowl in a bowling league, attend University of Colorado and Denver Broncos football games, go to the theatre to see plays and musicals. What drew your interest in the Phi Chi Theta organization that led to joining and becoming a member? I was working full time and just going to classes. I was invited by a fellow classmate to come to a Rush and I did and received an invitation to join and I accepted. You have assumed many roles for the Phi Chi Theta organization both as a collegiate and alumni and now on the national level as Policy Board Chair which has been your favorite and why? I really enjoyed being a District Director (now called Regional Director) because of the hospitality I received when I visited the chapters. Being around the collegiates is very important to me. I also enjoyed being part of the expansion team because, again I was able to visit the collegiates. How has being a part of the fraternity impacted your career and/or personal life? First of all, I am not certain whether I would have earned the BSBA degree if I had not been a member of Phi Chi Theta. When I first attended the University of Denver, my intention was to receive an Associate Degree. Thus, I would not have had the opportunity to apply to the State Department for an overseas job. I spent 5 years working in Bangkok, Thailand, Vientiane, Laos, Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Karachi Pakistan. 14

{OFFICER SPOTLIGHT} What is your favorite memory from your time as a collegiate member? Friendship, first of all. Our chapter was well received by the Dean of the College. His Administrative Assistant was our Advisor and we met weekly in the Dean's Conference Room. The School of Business was located downtown. The main campus was 12 miles away in a typical campus setting. Most of the students were taking classes at night, working during the day. Today, the School of Business is located in a beautiful building on the main campus. Do you have an experience as an alumnae that you can share to illustrate how staying involved after graduation can make a difference in your life? Wow, that is a tough one to answer. I guess I can answer that by saying I never thought that I would not be involved. What would you tell a potential pledge about Phi Chi Theta? This is a wonderful organization for you to join. You will be a part of a team, thus you will get as much out of it as you put into it. Be involved. What are your plans over the next five years personally and professionally? I will continue being involved with Phi Chi Theta in some capacity. I will continue to Mary Ellen with her dog Farley volunteer at the Denver Hospice in the Medical Records. I enjoy my season tickets for University of Colorado's football and Denver Broncos. I enjoy traveling, so hoping to do some more of that. With this being a National Meeting year, do you have a National Meeting story that you could share? I have so many memories from National Meetings. Sometimes after the meetings, I spend vacation time traveling, either with another member sightseeing, or traveling alone. After one of them, I traveled on the Delta Queen for a week. Once, two members wanted to see Colorado, so they came home with me and we traveled to the mountains. There was one meeting that was memorable. One year the meeting was at a hotel that was in terrible shape. It had no pillow cases, towels or wash cloths. We had to go out and buy them. My cousin drove me to the hotel and she said, "I think you have the wrong hotel." This hotel has been condemned. The next convention (1976), we had the convention in Denver and we were in a brand new hotel. I was the convention chair that year. The host chapters were in charge of all the arrangements. The hotel was close to the University of Colorado Denver campus. 15

The Walk to End Lupus Now is the signature event of the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. In more than 70 cities and towns across America thousands of people walk to make a difference in the lives of people affected by lupus and raise essential funds for education, support services, programs and research. It is estimated that 1.5 million Americans, and 120,000 Texans have a form of lupus. Lupus is a chronic and potentially life threatening autoimmune disease that can be devastating not only for the patient with lupus but for their family as well. It is hard to diagnose, challenging to manage and there is no cure at this time. Find out more about joining a walk near you! Visit The Alpha Nu Chapter, University of North Texas shows support 22

{FROM THE FOUNDATION} Scholarship Deadline Quickly Approaching The Foundation Scholarship Chairman, Mary Ellen Lewis, tells me the judges for the Phi Chi Theta Educational Foundation s scholarship competition are selected, ready and very willing to begin their judging duties as soon as they receive the completed applications. The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2014 which is rapidly approaching and we are looking for a record breaking amount of applicants this year with the scholarships to be presented at the annual meeting in Orlando, FL. Now, it is up to you, the collegiate and graduate members of Phi Chi Theta to make those judges both happy AND busy. Are you working on your application yet? If not, why not? Oh, you say, my grades are not that great. OR I don t have the time to do a proper job of completing it. OR I am too busy with stuff. Hmmmm.well, you can t win unless you apply and, sometimes it is better to try a few times along the way until practice makes perfect. Many members have been successful after a few failed attempts, and we have also had a winner who was successful in obtaining two different scholarships in two different years. So let s rule out the excuses and apply. Make it a point to go to the Phi Chi Theta Educational Foundation website, pull up and print out the application and instructions, review the FAQs provided by the Foundation to answer any basic questions you may have regarding the application process. If you still have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mary Ellen Lewis directly at Also, your final application can be submitted by to PCTEdScholarship@aol.com or by USPS (regular mail to arrive by May 1) to Mary Ellen Lewis, 1886 South Poplar Street, Denver, CO Remember that it will still take time to receive the necessary transcripts to support your application and to receive the letters of recommendation so start NOW to prepare your application if it is not already in process. Don t forget there are six scholarships to be awarded in August, 2014 totaling $5,400 (See listing in the March Foundation s enewsletter on the phichitheta.org website). Make it your personal goal to participate in the 2014 scholarship program the judges are eagerly awaiting your application. $90 for 90 Years Your chapter will participate in the $90 for 90 years campaign to celebrate in August the 90th birthday of Phi Chi Theta. Each chapter s participation in the $90 for 90 years is critical for the future programs of the Foundation, as we need to have the full commitment of the collegiate and alumni membership for the Foundation to be in a position to continue to award future scholarships and support various educational programs. The Foundation is not eligible for many large grant programs because we only award scholarships for our own members. A decision was made upon formation of the Foundation to keep our monies where they are most meaningful to our contributors within our own membership. By: Fran Spencer Make your contribution today:

{PCT HIGHLIGHTS} PHI CHI THETA CELEBRATES 90 YEARS! It is 2014 and the Phi Chi Theta Fraternity is celebrating its 90th year. In 1955, I decided to attend the University of Denver. The Business School was located in downtown Denver. I started taking courses at night because I had a full time job in the play publishing business, also located downtown. By Spring Semester 1956, I was introduced to the Phi Chi Theta Fraternity, Colorado Alpha Chapter. At that time, there were four competing business fraternities there Delta Sigma Pi, Alpha Kappa Psi, Phi Gamma Nu and Phi Chi Theta. I was so pleased when I was introduced to Phi Chi Theta. The members were wonderful. It didn t matter that I was shy, didn t like public speaking and was not even sure that I should join any organization. During the pledge process I was taught the history of the fraternity. While the initiation ceremony was somewhat different than it is today, being part of the ritual has not changed. It was meaningful, special and we realized that we were part of a very extraordinary organization. I was a sophomore when I entered the University of Denver. By the time, I was a Senior I was elected the From the Alpha chapter circa 1959: Mary Ellen Lewis, President Saundra Graham, Vice President Deanna Leino, Secretary Jane Matheson, Treasurer President of the chapter. The three other business fraternities (2 male 1 female) did not really interact with Phi Chi Theta or each other. I decided to put a stop to that and asked to meet with all of the advisors. After the meeting, they all agreed that the fraternities should hold joint professional meetings when there were speakers. Each chapter could take turns contacting speakers and Once a Phi Chi Theta, Always a Phi Chi Theta bringing in the refreshments. The speakers were happy because they were talking to a very large group. Guess what? It worked. Members of all four groups were talking to each other, friendly and not worrying about competition. During my four years as a Phi Chi Theta collegiate, we had so many wonderful memories decorating the Dean's office at homecoming, going to the football games with the Delta Sigma Pi's members, filling out the Efficiency Rewards Points (ERP), working on the Ship's Log (scrapbook), attending many functions hosted by the Denver Alumni group, meeting once a week in the Dean's conference room and studying together when we shared classes It was a wonderful experience being an officer of the chapter, traveling to Madison, Wisconsin for my first convention in 1958, as the National Councilor. It was my first time to fly on a plane. I was in awe of the national officers. You might even call it hero worship. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever be a national officer. I immediately joined the Denver Alumni Chapter after graduation in In 1961, I was hired by the State Department and worked overseas. At that time, I did not know about alumni at large or life membership, so my 24

I returned to of the convention, indicated Denver in 1966, and how proud she was at the immediately joined the Denver news that Phi Chi Theta was Alumni Chapter. In my years in Phi Chi Theta, I have had the privilege of being a Regional Director, Vice President of Expansion, Vice President of Internal Affairs and National President in the 1970s and 1980s. Later when the office of Vice President of Alumni was created in 1986, I was elected to that office. In 2008, I served as Interim Vice President of Expansion. In 2010, I was elected to that post. In 2012, I was appointed as Policy Board Chair. What s next? I believe I will be sit back and enjoy the future of Phi Chi Theta Fraternity. 27 {END NOTES} Zeta Beta Recognized for Sustainability Excellence Zeta Beta received a Letter of Recognition for Sustainability Excellence from Kevin Kononenko, President of the Greek Life Sustainability Team. The Greek Life Sustainability Team is a student group at the University of Michigan that is dedicated to campus sustainability initiatives and organizes a competition for the campus called Recyclemania: Let's Get Wasteless ( Recyclemania is a nationally recognized dormitory recycling competition and has just completed their pilot program for Greek Life organizations. In order to participate, Zeta Beta had to install a Sustainability Chair in their chapter, record weekly recycling rates over a ten week competition period and submit that information. The chapter worked with representatives in the Waste and Recycling Office and the Office of Greek Life and participated in recycling educational programs. The competition consisted of ten fraternities, seven sororities and four pre professional organizations. Phi Chi Theta's Zeta Beta chapter was recognized as one of the nine winning organization, commended for leadership in sustainability initiatives and received a $250 donation to the philanthropy of their choice. If other chapters are interested in participating in this program at their universities or other sustainability initiatives, they can contact Kevin Kononenko (kevkon@umich.edu) for more information about how to get started. 27
