Through vocational service, Rotarians serve others through their professions and promote high ethical standards. In honor of Vocational Service Month, members are encouraged to apply the skills and talents they use in their professions to their club s service projects. Student Organization Expo Held at SUNY Geneseo The Rotaract Club, represented by Devin Grau, Ben Nagasing & Nicole Rountree, was one of over 100 student groups promoting their organizations at the Student Organization Expo which was held on Sept. 11th at the College. The Expo is held twice a year and offers one-stop shopping for students looking to learn more about SUNY Geneseo s diverse Student Organizations. The Rotaract Club will be participating in the SUNY Geneseo CARES Service Day on October 19th.The event is sponsored by the Office of Volunteerism and Service Learning. From the ABC s of Rotary... The first official Rotary flag reportedly was flown in Kansas City, Missouri in In 1922 a Rotary flag was carried over the South Pole by Admiral Richard Byrd, a member of the Winchester, Virginia Rotary Club. PPMatt Gaynor, his wife Susan and their two daughters, Fiona and Maeve, participated in the Oak Tree 5K Run & Walk which was held on Labor Day Weekend in Geneseo. The event raised money for the Genesee Valley Conservancy, a not-for-profit organization committed to preserving open space.

8 October 2013 P a g e 8 Rotary Around the World In late 2012, the Rotary Club of Bukit Bintang led more than a dozen clubs and community partners in District 3300 in a project to collect shoes for people who can t afford them. Rotaract Club Participates in Fundraiser On Saturday, September 21, Rotaract Club members participated in the 9th Annual Comfort Care Walk to benefit the Teresa House. Teresa House is a non-profit ministry for residents who are nearing the end of a terminal illness. It is entirely supported by donations. Joyce Horner attended the District s Literacy Seminar held on September 21st at the East Rochester First Presbyterian Church. She reported that to be eligible to receive the District Literacy Award, clubs must complete five criteria for recognition. As of today our club has completed two criteria. 9 October 2013 P a g e 9 PROGRAM REPORT Linda Weaver Speaks About Geneseo Parish Outreach Center Photo by Mary Kay Yanik Linda Weaver was our guest speaker at the September 9th meeting. She gave an overview of the mission of the Geneseo Parish Outreach Center. The Outreach Center has been giving access to health care to the uninsured and underinsured since 2004 and is located at the Geneseo United Methodist Church. According to Linda the Outreach Center primarily serves members of Livingston County with 327 caseload clients. They also serve Wyoming County (29 caseload clients) and Steuben County (10 caseload clients). The services the Outreach Center provides include: primary health care, family medicine, pediatric care, health education and advocacy. The Outreach Center makes extensive use of external services through referrals including dentistry, medical laboratory, x-rays, podiatry, vision and medical specialties. The Outreach Center also provides supplemental food for its clients. The Wish List for the Outreach Center includes: gas cards, postage stamps, office supplies, juice boxes, peanut butter, cheese & crackers and cleaning supplies. And, of course, monetary contributions and volunteers! Opportunities for volunteers include: clerical duties, fundraising, public speaking, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and doctors. The Outreach Center serves clients by appointment only. A $5.00 donation for services is requested, although no one is ever turned away who is unable to pay. Exchange Students Raquel Otero Arizabalo and Katherine Feathers Attend Club Meeting Darcy Dewar Lynch, Raquel Otero Arizabalo and Mo Dalton (Photo by Marilyn Lyon) many other countries she visited including Italy where she saw the Pope. Since returning home Katie plans to get involved in a local Rotex club (Rotex is an organization open to former Rotary International Youth Exchange Students). Raquel briefly gave the Club some info about her family. Her older brother is also an exchange student. She recently celebrated her birthday along with her twin brother and sister so our Club members sang Happy Birthday to her. Raquel plans to attend some of our meetings in the future. Raquel Otero Arizabalo, our Club s Inbound Exchange Student from Madrid, Spain, and Katherine Feathers, Returning Outbound Exchange Student to Emsdetten, Germany, attended our meeting along with Katherine s father, Tim, on September 23rd. 11 October 2013 P a g e 11 The Geneseo Rotary Club was one of the sponsors for the Geneseo Summer Concert Series for Halloween, October 31st District Rotaract News JOKE OF THE MONTH Why do spiders make good baseball players? They know how to catch flies. There is a new Rotaract Club at SUNY Brockport thanks to Juan Delgado. Juan was a Rotary Exchange Student to Germany and a past member of Rotex. He is presently enrolled as an International Business major. The Club s advisor is Dr. Mary Jo Orzech. I want to acknowledge the efforts of our former club member and Past President, Roxanne Johnston, for assisting Juan. Roxanne is SUNY Brockport Vice President, Division of Advancement and President of the Brockport Foundation. She was instrumental in getting the Rotaract Club at SUNY Geneseo established.
