Here's part of the story: Edmonton s Rebecca Lappa will give Stony Plain an evening of music inspired from poetry during the Summer Sessions concert series on July 13. Currently Lappa is attending Grant MacEwan college to study music and has recently learned how to play the guitar. During her performance on July 13, Lappa said residents can expect strong vocals and interesting stories. St. Albert singer-songwriter flies to top spot in Airmiles Detour Big Break contest Music alumnus Paul Woida was interviewed about winning the Air Miles Detour Big Break contest. Here's part of the story: 2. Paul Woida's song Not Yours has bagged top spot for the first annual Air Miles Detour Big Break contest. The St. Albert singer-songwriter's infectious guitar hit received top scores, and he was awarded the opportunity to open for Grammy Award winner Meghan Trainor. The MacEwan University graduate first heard of the Big Break contest through a friend. The criterion was simply post a video performing an original song in an unusual location. Woida submitted Not Yours cleverly recorded as a nighttime scene on a balcony. The video can be viewed at airmiles.ca/detour. City native honoured by university A profile on Theatre alumnus and 2016 Distinguished Alumni award recipeint David Cormican. Here's part of the story: 3. A Toronto producer with Lethbridge roots has been named a distinguished alumnus at an Edmonton university. David Cormican is MacEwan University s 2016 distinguished alumnus. 2 Brandon musician wins Fred Sherratt award Music alumnus Brendan Lyons was interviewed about winning the MusiCounts Fred Sharratt Award. Here's part of the story: 4. Brendan Lyons was one of 12 outstanding music program graduates from across the country who were recently awarded with the 2016 Fred Sherratt Award by MusiCounts, a music education charity. The annual award, named after broadcasting pioneer Fred Sherratt, came with a $2,500 cash prize, a trip to Toronto and a day of networking and touring Universal Music Canada, SOCAN, Nobel Street Studios and Bell Media headquarters. Here's part of the story: 9. About 70 courageous volunteers rappelled off the side of the Coast Edmonton Plaza Hotel Wednesday as part of the annual Rope for Hope fundraiser. At least two of them were from St. Albert. Rope for Hope is a national event that challenges people to raise money for Make-a- Wish Canada by zipping down the side of a building on a rope. The cash helps grant the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. Paul Kane alumnus and MacEwan University student Katie Fitzgerald made the drop, mustering $1,500 with the help of family and friends. I ve been skydiving before and I ve done rock climbing, so I m kind of familiar with the activity, but I ve never done it from this high, she said, moments before the plunge. Roman Pushniak struggles with the loss of his father, a sergeant in the Ukrainian military, who was killed two years ago in the country's ongoing war with pro-russian rebels. The 15-year-old from Kiev is more optimistic about his future. After being in the Edmonton area for the past month, he has fallen in love with the city and the post-secondary schools. "Yesterday we were at MacEwan University and it was very great," he said. "I want to live here, start a family and study." Pushniak is part of Children for Peace, a group of 14 Ukrainian teens who were handpicked out of 300 to get a glimpse of Canadian society.
