Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a home field to call their own. And, when present head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer field became a priority. Barto approached athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was finalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer field. Many local people, the players and coaches, put in a lot of leg work and effort to the building of the field, Barto said. Without the time, labor, and monies from the local community, it would have never come about. The field is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 40 years. Johann has been a strong supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, when Barto spearheaded the drive for a new field, Johann was UNLV Men's & Women's Soccer Media Guide

5 las vegas living We have a first-class facility, which is one of the best of its kind on the West Coast. - Barry Barto, Men s Head Coach and Director of Soccer more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl All-Star Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV / adidas Soccer Classic for both the men s and women s squads. Radio first came to Johann Field when Connecticut s WHUS-FM broadcast a 1988 match between UNLV and the University of Connecticut (again in 2001). The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inauguaral contest in 2002 featured the WUSA s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breaks took on San Jose. The final spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexico Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In 2004, the UNLV men s soccer team posted its 125th victory at the site, achieving the milestone in the second to last game of the year. The Rebels first eclipsed the century mark in 174 games over 16 years. Meanwhile, after posting a program-best 9-1 record in 2004, the women s soccer team is just four wins away from 50 home victories in just their eighth season. With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights for night matches. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 23rd season in

6 Strength & Conditioning The complex allows us to run more athletes through in a shorter period of time and offer much better access and service. The weight area is as nice aesthetically as any in the nation. - Mark Philippi Director of Strength & Conditioning UNLV soccer s strength and conditioning program, under the guidance of Jodi Nash, is geared toward developing student-athletes athletic potential through a program that includes strength, speed, flexibility, conditioning and nutrition. Nash specifically handles the women s team, while Jason Kabo works with the men. Featuring an individualized conditioning regimen, players follow a year-round system stressing the development of strength, power and speed. Nash, Kabo and Director of Strength & Conditioning Mark Philippi are responsible for the year-round training of men and women student-athletes from all 17 varsity sports. With the opening of the Lied Athletic Complex in 1996, Philippi says the strength & conditioning program continues to grow in philosophic scope as well as physical size. The two-level strength facility, which was recently renamed the Ernie Becker Sr. Strength & Conditioning Center, is three times as large as the previous quarters and includes all new equipment and a plyometric area to best help develop student-athletes. Complete with three offices, two restrooms and storage, the 8,500-square-foot deck features free weights, power racks and Olympian platforms. UNLV s new facility houses more than 60 weight stations and Hammer Strength Machines. The 1,200- square-foot second level offers stretching and aerobic areas catered to each sport. 7 Sports Medicine We have a top staff of team physicians that stop by after practice to perform evaluations and follow-up treatments. This helps provide constant care for athletes. - Kyle Wilson, Director of Athletic Training Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. The trainers for this year s teams are Mary Rock for the women, and Bernie Chavies for the men s squad. 8 Academics As a proud former student-athlete, I have always recognized the importance of academic advisement. It is a crucial component in the balancing of academics and athletics. Because I am so passionate about my work, I am filled with pride at each and every graduation ceremony as I watch my students cross the stage knowing that we have worked together to succeed. - Vaune Kadlubek, Academic Advisor VAUNE KADLUBEK Soccer Academic Advisor Academic advising for soccer, which is headed by Vaune Kadlubek, saw a total of 23 Rebels on the academic all-conference list in 2004, as the women placed 13 members on the Academic All-Mountain West Conference team, while on the men s side, UNLV saw a program-best 10 student-athletes named to the Academic All-MPSF team. In addidtion, Matt Johnson received the Most Outstanding Male Scholar Award at the 2005 UNLV Scholar Athlete Honors Luncheon for having the highest cumlative GPA of all UNLV male athletes of Ever since its first classroom opened in 1957, UNLV has been on the rise in the world of higher education. 9 Support Staff The 2005 UNLV men s soccer season marks the 31st year in which the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship will benefit a Las Vegas native on the team. Junior midfielder/forward Omar Bywaters of Chaparral High School in Las Vegas is this year s scholarship recipient. He is the son of Thomas and Beverly Bywaters. Since 1974, the UNLV men s soccer program has been quite fortunate to have the support of Las Vegas businessman Ken Johann and his wife, Alice. It was that fall in 1974 when the Johanns son, Peter, died in a sporting accident. The next fall, the Johann s decided to honor their late son with a memorial scholarship. Established in 1975, the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship assists one deserving student-athlete in attending classes at UNLV while participating in intercollegiate soccer. The scholarship is awarded to the student-athlete each season who demonstrates excellence in six areas: academic performance, techniques and tactics of soccer, team loyalty, cooperation, leadership and endurance. The press box seats four comfortably and houses statisticians and the game announcer. Visiting radio must be arranged in advance to insure an accessible phone line. INTERVIEWS: Interviews with student-athletes or coaches must be arranged through the UNLV Sports Information Office. Players and coaches are available prior to or after the completion of practice. No player or coach interviews will be conducted during practice. On game days, players and coaches will be available for interviews on the field following a 10-minute cooling-off period after the conclusion of the match. JOHANN FIELD LOCATION: Johann Field is located on the UNLV campus and is most accessible through the Flamingo Access Road, which is one block east of Swenson Street on Flamingo Road. Swenson Street is one mile east of the Las Vegas strip linking Flamingo Road and Tropicana Avenue. TICKET INFORMATION: Admission for UNLV soccer games: $5 for adults, $2 for children and UNLV faculty and staff; free for UNLV students with a valid University ID. The UNLV Soccer Combo package is available at a discounted rate of $50 for all 18 men s and women s home games combined. Separate men s and women s season tickets are also available at $35. INTERNET: Information for all 17 intercollegiate sports at UNLV can be obtained on the internet at DICK CALVERT Voice of the Rebels Dick Calvert, the Voice of the Rebels, returns for another season as the game announcer at Peter Johann Memorial Field. Calvert, one of the foremost soccer voices in the country and most experienced broadcasters of American professional soccer, has worked for the 10-time MISL Champion San Diego Shockers, Tacoma Stars, Las Vegas Americans, Minnesota Kicks and Phoenix Pride as well as the NASL s Las Vegas Quicksilvers and the California Surf. Most notably, he was the lone American to handle play-by-play radio duties for USA s dramatic victory over Colombia at the 1994 World Cup. No stranger to Rebel Athletics, Calvert has been the game announcer for UNLV football, men s basketball and baseball games for more than four decades. He also serves as voice of the Las Vegas Bowl, the MWC Championships when held in Las Vegas, and the annual NBA exhibition game held at the Thomas & Mack Center. In addition, Calvert works over 100 local events each year. The longtime Las Vegas resident retired from broadcasting and the UNLV athletics department, after serving as the director of broadcasting, director of athletic marketing for Olympic sports and coordinator of athletic facilities/ operations. He is enjoying retirement by spending time as a host to corporate tournaments for Walters Golf. Calvert and his wife, Anne, are the parents of four children and the proud grandparents of UNLV Men's & Women's Soccer Media Guide
