2 SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE WEEKLY RELEASE - WEEK 8 2 Grambling State defensive coordinator Dennis Winston has been named interim coach relieveing George Ragsdale, who was serving as interim head coach after the dismissal of head coach Doug Williams prior to week three of the season Prairie View A&M s QB Jerry Lovelocke ranks in the top fi ve in the nation for individual game-highs. He ranks second in total offense (541), completions (42) and passing yards (533) Malcolm Cyrus (Alabama State) becomes the third running back in the league to rush for 200 or more yards. Cyrus (246) joins Courtney Brown (Prairie View A7M - 224) and Tommy Gooden (Jackson State - 214) as the leagues top rushing performances on the season Alcorn State s Tavoriss Doss holds the longest play for a touchdown in FCS with a 96-yard punt return against Alabama State Jackson State remains the only unbeaten team in conference play with a 5-0 record. Austin (9/28) was the league s fi rst victory over a non HBCU Division I FCS team since The last team from the SWAC to accomplish the feat was Grambling State with a win over Northwestern State CONFERENCE NEWS AND NOTES The SWAC joins the UAPB community in mourning the loss of league hall of famer L.C. Greenwood. Greenwood, passed at the age of 67 due to natural causes. He was an All-Pro defensive end who won four Super Bowl rings as a member of Pittsburgh Steelers famed Steel Curtain defense Southern WR Lee Doss s 214-yard receiving performance against Prairie View A&M ranks fourth in FCS on the season The Sports Network has added Alabama State running back Isaiah Crowell to its 2013 Walter Payton Award Watch List. He joins two other FCS athletes as mid-season additions moving the list to 20 award nominees. The 27th annual award is presented by The Sports Network and recognizes the most outstanding player in the FCS. Lee Doss (Southern), Jerry Lovelocke (Prairie View A&M), Tavoris Doss (Alcorn State), Nicholas Martin (Alabama State), Gabe Dunlap (Prairie View A&M), Myles Everett (Alabama State), Antonio Jenkins (Arkansas-Pine Bluff), Jer-Ryan Harris (Arkansas-Pine Bluff), and Willie Quinn (Southern), rank in the top fi ve in the nation in their respective categories Arkansas-Pine Bluff defenders Jer-ryan Harris (1) and Antonio Jenkins (2) are ranked at the top of the FCS in total tackles. Jenkins has 78 solo tackles (13.0 avg/g) and Jenkins posts 62 (12.4 avg/g). Jenkins is also numer one in the nation with 39 solo tackles (7.8 avg/g) There are two running back tandems in which each player rushed for 100 or more yards in the same game. Courtney Brown (224) and Johnta Hebert (153) of PVAMU combined for 377 yards on the ground in a loss to Southern. Brandon Eldemire (154) and Barrington Scott (125) of AAMU totaled 279 rushing yards in a loss to PVAMU Isaiah Crowell (Alabama State) is ranked No. 8 in the nation in rushing yards per game (127.2) and No. 5 in the country in total rushing yards with 763 Dray Joseph (Southern) leaped up the QB-ranks after his 480-yard performance against Prairie View A&M (9/14). Greenwood (DE) PLAYERS OF THE WEEK CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Malcolm Cyrus Alabama State RB Jr Autaugaville, Ala. Cyrus tallied career highs and scored the game winning touchdown in overtime to help Alabama State pick up a win over Prairie View A&M. He rushed for 241 yards on 24 carries to post a 10.0 average and two touchdowns. His longest run was an 80- yard scamper that gave ASU a lead in the third quarter. He combined for 301 total yards with four receptions for 60 yards. His career highs included: carries, rushing and total yards, longest touchdown run. Cyrus chipped in 47 percent of the total offense including 70 percent of the ground game. Jerry Lovelocke Prairie View A&M QB Jr Baltimore, Md. Despite Prairie View A&M s overtime loss to ALabama State, Lovelocke passed for a career-high 533 yards and four touchdowns on 42-of-62 pass attempts. He connected with seven receivers, accounted for 78 percent of the offense and orchestrated a 17-play 95-yard drive in the closing minutes to even the score, sending the game into overtime. DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Leland Baker Alabama State LB Sr Birmingham, Ala. Baker registered a game and career high of 17 tackles in Alabama State s overtime victory against Prairie View A&M. His contribution consisted of eight solo tackles, including 3.5 for a loss, 1.5 sacks. His tackles for a loss and sacks were also game highs. Baker led a defense that kept PVAMU from scoring in the fi nal frame en route to ASU s fi fth consecutive win. Baker also becomes the fi fth different ASU defender to earn the award during the last six weeks. NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK Quinterius Toppings Alabama State QB Fr Eight Mile, Ala. In Alabama State s overtime win over Prairie View A&M, Toppings, the number three quarterback on the roster, stepped in after back-up quarterback Arsenio Favor suffered an injury that kept him sidelined for the remainder of the game. In his fi rst collegiate appearance, Toppings tossed 11-of-18 for 157 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He connected a 24-yard pass to boost ASU to a 21-7 lead in the second quarter. SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK Haiden McCraney Alcorn State K / P Fr Jackson, Miss. McCraney went 6-for-6 in PAT attempts and nailed two fi eld goals from 23 and 27 yards in the Braves 48-0 win over Grambling State in the 30th Annual Circle City Classic. McCraney averaged 62.1 yards per kickoff and two touchbacks. He also punted fi ve times for an average of 38.0 yards per punt with his longest of 50 yards and placed three inside the 20.

Monte Coleman, Anthony Jones and before his dismissal, Doug Williams (Grambling State) were teammates with the Washington Redskins winning Super Bowl XXII Prairie View A&M running back Courtney Brown s 224 yards against Southern marked the fourth consecutive year a SWAC running back rushed for 200-plus yards in a single game - Kaderius Lacey (2012), Dawrence Roberts (2011), and Frank Warner (2010) In week three, Southern and Prairie View A&M combined for 121 points. The total score is the most in a SWAC match-up during the championship game era since 1999 The SWAC television schedule includes 22 games including 11 conference contests to air on several major networks for this season.the line-up of networks includes: ESPN, ESPNU, ESPN3, NBC Sports, FOX SportsSouth, CSS, CSN Houston, and Comcast Sportsnet. For the 2013 season, Southwestern Athletic Conference administered the use of instant replay for selected nationally televised conference games Southwestern Athletic Conference Hall of Famers and Mississippi Valley State University legends, quarterback Willie Totten and defensive lineman David Deacon Jones (posthumously), were honored at the MEAC/ SWAC Legends Reception on August 31 After fi ghting for a roster spot during the preseason, three members of the SWAC Football Class of 2012 landed on the practice squads of their respective teams to open the 2013 NFL season - Alabama A&M: Jamaal Johnson-Webb (Alabama A&M) Alabama State: Greg Jenkins (Oakland Raiders), Terren Jones (Atlanta Falcons), Saeed Lee (Atlanta Falcons - Injured Reserve) Seven products of SWAC football are on the active 53- man roster to start the 2013 NFL season. The inlcudes: Alabama A&M: Robert Mathis (Indianapolis Colts) - Frank Kearse (Crolina Panthers) Alabama State: Tavaris Jackson (Seattle Seahawks) Grambling State: Larry Donnell (New York Giants) - Jason Hatcher (Dallas Cowboys) - Texas Southern: Joe Anderson (Chicago Bears) - Arkansas-Pine Bluff: Terron Armstead (New Orleans Saints) The Southwestern Athletic Conference Council of Presidents and Chancellors voted unanimously on May 30 to relocate the 2013 Toyota SWAC Football Championship to Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas for the next three seasons Mississippi Valley State s loss to Florida A&M in the 9th Annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney marks the third consecutive loss for the SWAC in the annual contest. MVSU made its fi rst appearance with Jeremy Johnson earning team MVP honors for the Delta Devils. The SWAC now holds a 2-7 record with Southern picking up the only wins for the league. The last win recorded in the Challenge for the SWAC - Southern defeated Delaware State in 2010 Ten players from the SWAC 2012 class opened preseason play on the rosters of several NFL teams: Terron Armstead (Saints - UAPB), Rico Richardson (Chiefs - JKST), Greg Jenkins (Raiders - ALST), Joseph LeBeau (Rams - JKST), Eric Harper (Raiders - GRAM), Terren Jones (Falcons - ALST), Jarvis Reed (Packers - PVAM), Brandon Thurmond (Falcons - UAPB), Charles Hawkins (Cardinals - SUBR), Jamaal Johnson-Webb (Cardinals - AAMU) CSM SWAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK WEEK 1: Courtney Brown (Prairie View A&M) and Robert Nelson (Alabama A&M), recipients of the Southwestern Athletic Conference offensive and defensive weekly honors, were recognized by College Sports Madness as its SWAC Players of the Week WEEK 2: College Sports Madness tabbed Zach Pendleton (Jackson State) as its SWAC offensive player of the week and Davon Jones (Mississippi Valley State) as its top defender in the league WEEK 3: College Sports Madness named Dray Joseph (Southern) as its SWAC offensive player of the week and Kourtney Berry (Alabama State) as its top defender in the league WEEK 4: Lee Doss (Southern) and Daerius Washington (Alabama State) were selected by College Sports Madness as its top offensive and defensive player in the league for the week WEEK 5: Jerry Lovelocke (Prairie View A&M) and Robert Nelson (Alabama A&M) were picked by College Sports Madness as its top SWAC offensive and defensive players for the week WEEK 6: College Sports Madness selected Tommy Gooden (Jackson State) and Terrance Hudson (Mississippi Valley State) as its SWAC representatives for offense and defensive players of the week WEEK 7: Malcolm Cyrus (Alabama State) and Damon Watkins (Alcorn State) have been named College Sports Madness SWAC roffense and defensive players of the week CFPA SWAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK WEEK 1: Seven players received national recognition after their performances in week one. The College Football Performance Awards labeled Bobby Wenzig (Alabama State) National Placekicker of the Week. Robert Nelson (Alabama A&M), Dray Joseph (Southern), John McNabb (Jackson State), Courtney Brown (Prairie View A&m), Corey Carter (Texas Southern) and Chris Terry (Alabama State) were handed honorable mention WEEK 2: Seven players earned College Football Performance Awards national honors with Willie Quinn (Southern) and Myles Everett (Alabama State) were tagged CFPA National Kickoff Returner of the Week. 8 SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE WEEKLY RELEASE - WEEK TOYOTA SWAC FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP The SWAC Football Championship Game began in 1999, with conference teams beginning play in an East-West divisional format, allowing division winners to meet on the fi eld to decide a champion. Through an agreement forged with the City of Birmingham, Ala. the Southwestern Athletic Conference staged its fi rst championship game at historic Legion Field. On Saturday, December 11, 1999, the Jackson State University Tigers (East Champion) and the Southern University Jaguars (West Champion) kicked off the inaugural Southwestern Athletic Conference Football Championship game. its fi rst outright league title in football in Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern have each made an appearance. Alabama A&M has represented the Eastern Division fi ve times and posted a 1-4 record in the championship game. Alabama State is 1-3 in its four appearances, while Jackson State is 1-3 in four championship games. Mississippi Valley State and Alcorn State have never appeared in the SWAC Championship Game. In all, the Western Division is 10-3 over the Eastern Division and has won fi ve straight in the 14-year history of the event. In 13 years of the SWAC Championship Game, eight of the 10 conference schools have earned a berth to play for the title, with the last two SWAC champions being fi rst-time participants in Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern. From the Western Division, Grambling State has earned a trip to the championship six times the most of any SWAC school and posts a 6-1 record. Southern has played in the title game three times with a 2-1 record, while Arkansas-Pine Bluff has made two appearances capturing Last season, the game expereinced it fi rst overtime with UAPB defeating JSU, In May of 2013, The Southwestern Athletic Conference Council of Presidents and Chancellors voted unanimously to relocate the 2013 Toyota SWAC Football Championship to Houston, Texas. The football championship game will be held at Reliant Stadium which is home of the NFL Houston Texans.
