FCS rankings in brackets prior to school s name: [Sports Network Fathead.com Poll/FCS Coaches Poll] WEEK 1 PREVIEW MOREHEAD STATE will get the 2011 Pioneer Football League schedule underway, Thursday, when it hosts Kentucky Christian in the first meeting between the two teams. Junior quarterback Zach Lewis will seek to build on a strong sophomore campaign (263.5 yards per game) that catapulted the Eagles into the top half of the PFL regular-season race last season DRAKE will head west to meet North Dakota and will look to its defense for a repeat of last season s effort. Senior linebacker Tyler Moorehead returns after leading the PFL s second stingiest defense (20.5 points per game) with 62 tackles DAYTON puts its nine-game win streak (2nd longest in the FCS) on the line at defending Northeast Conference champion Robert Morris. The Flyers posted a victory last season in Dayton but the Colonials bounced back and reached the FCS Playoffs. Dayton may have to turn to its defense in the early going as the offense returns just four starters from last year s team that won a share of the PFL title BUTLER is one of just three PFL squads (Morehead State and Valparaiso the others) to open the 2011 campaign at home when it hosts Albion. The Bulldogs return 13 starters from last season s squad and that group will look to rebound from a disappointing 2010 campaign that saw them fall to seventh place in the PFL race one year after winning a share of the title CAMPBELL begins its fourth season of football with a visit to Old Dominion. The Fighting Camels return an impressive 16 starters from last season s team, but will have to find a replacement for quarterback Daniel Polk who led the league s signal callers with 12 rushing touchdowns last season DAVIDSON heads to the nation s capital to meet Georgetown in its 2011 opener. Sophomore quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff, last season s PFL Freshman Offensive Player of the Year, returns to lead the Wildcats this season after throwing for yards last season JACKSONVILLE puts its nine-game win streak (2nd longest in the FCS) on the line when it travels Southern Conference member The Citadel. The Dolphins were the PFL preseason choice to win the 2011 title and return the bulk of an offense that led the FCS in scoring (42.2 ppg) last season. Senior quarterback Josh McGregor returns and was named to The Sports Network s Walter Payton Award Watch List during the preseason MARIST will travel 65 miles southeast to face Fairfield for its opener. Senior quarterback Tommy Reilly returns after posting a Red Foxes single-season record for passing yardage (2,383 yards) but missed the spring with an injury VALPARAISO begins the second season of the Dale Carlson era with a home night contest against Franklin. The Crusaders will enter the opener with a big question mark at quarterback where five different men served at that position and the yardage leader (Nate Goergen) will not return The sun will set on the 2011 opening weekend on the west coast where SAN DIEGO will travel north to meet Azusa Pacific in the Los Angeles suburbs. The Toreros preseason story line has focused on senior defensive lineman Mario Kurn who led the FCS with 17 quarterback sacks last season.

2 PFL BEGINS 19TH CAMPAIGN The Pioneer Football League begins its 19th season of play when the league s members open the 2011 campaign the first weekend of September. Morehead State starts the season off with a 7 p.m., Thursday kickoff. The opening weekend closes when San Diego meets Azusa Pacific in a 10 p.m., Saturday start on the West Coast. ALL-PFL HONOREES RETURN Twenty-nine members of the 2010 All-PFL squads return to their teams in 2011, including 11 first-team selections and 18 second-team honorees. In addition, 36 members of the All-PFL honorable mention list return to their teams. Jacksonville and San Diego each return three first-team All-PFL honorees, while the Dolphins lead all PFL teams with seven All-PFL honorees among their returners. DEPTH OF EXPERIENCE AT SIGNAL-CALLER Seven of the PFL s top 10 in passing yardage return in Jacksonville s Josh McGregor returns for his senior campaign and highlights the group after leading the PFL with 2,242 passing yards last season. Morehead State junior Zach Lewis (2,125 yards) and San Diego junior Mason Mills (1,939) were second and third in passing yardage, respectively. Marist senior Tommy Reilly returns after posting 1,795 yards and ranking fourth among PFL passers. Davidson sophomore Jonathan Carkhuff picked up the league s Freshman Offensive Player of the Year honors after finishing seventh in passing yardage (1,676). Rounding out the group of returnees are Drake senior Mike Piatkowski (1,344) and Butler senior Andrew Huck (1,207) who were seventh and eighth last season, respectively. STARTING THE SEASON WITH A STREAK Jacksonville and Dayton each enter the 2011 campaign with a nine-game win streak carried over from last season. Their nine-game win streaks are the second-longest in the country, trailing on Eastern Washington, which rode a 10-game win streak to the FCS National Championship. STREAKING WHEN PFL PLAY RESUMES Jacksonville and Dayton will look to extend their respective double-digit win streaks in PFL action. The Dolphins own an 11- game win streak in PFL play, the second longest conference win streak in the country, trailing only Penn. Dayton carries forward the nation s third longest win streak, a 10-game stretch. It is guaranteed one of those streaks will come to an end this season when Dayton travels to Jacksonville, Oct. 8. THREE PFL ATHLETES NOMINATED FOR 2011 ALLSTATE AFCA GOOD WORKS TEAM Campbell s Branden Burt, Drake s Stoy Hall and San Diego s Al- Rilwan Adeyemi were among a record 132 nominees for the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, which recognizes the selfless contributions to volunteerism and community service made by college football student-athletes across the nation. JACKSONVILLE S MCGREGOR NAMED TO PAYTON WATCH LIST Jacksonville senior quarterback Josh McGregor, one of Football Championship Subdivision s passing leaders last season, has been named to the 2011 Walter Payton Award Watch list, The Sports Network announced during the preseason. McGregor, a second-team All-PFL selection last season, led the FCS in passing efficiency last season with a rating. He finished third among FCS passers in touchdowns thrown (32), eighth in total passing yards (3049), fifth in passing yardage per game (277.18) and 11th in total offense (275.82). The Payton Award annual recognizes the FCS Offensive Player of the Year and is presented the night prior to the Division I Football Championship. 3 FORMER DAYTON HEAD COACH MIKE KELLY IN HALL Long-time Dayton head coach Mike Kelly was induced into the National Football Foundation s College Football Hall of Fame in July. Kelly was one of the winningest coaches in college football history, compiling a record during a 27-year career at Dayton. His.819 winning percentage is fourth-best among coaches with at least 25 years experience. JACKSONVILLE PICKED TO WIN PFL Jacksonville, which shared the 2010 Pioneer Football League championship, has been tapped as the 2011 preseason favorite in the league s preseason coaches poll, receiving eight of a possible nine first-place votes and 80 points. Dayton, which earned the other half of the league s 2010 title, was picked to finish second with 69 points. Drake (61 points) was picked third followed by San Diego (59) and Butler (47). Teams in the bottom half of the preseason poll were Morehead State (6th, 38 points), Campbell (7th, 33), Marist (8th, 31), Davidson (9th, 23) and Valparaiso (10th, 9). WHO TEAMS DON T PLAY CHANGES The 2011 season is the third in the current scheduling format in which each member plays eight conference contests, resulting in each team not playing one member on a two year basis. This is the first year the no-play team will rotate. Below are match-ups fans will not see during the 2011 schedule: Butler-San Diego Campbell-Dayton Davidson-Drake Jacksonville-Valparaiso Marist-Morehead State EXPANSION 2013 MERCER, STETSON TO JOIN PFL IN 2013 Pioneer Football League Commissioner Patty Viverito announced in une that Mercer University and Stetson University have accepted the league s invitations for membership. Both institutions will begin play with the 2013 season, bringing the league s membership to 12 teams at that time. Mercer, located in Macon, Ga., announced the return of its football program in The Bears have not competed in football since 1941 but its history includes playing the first football game in Georgia against the University of Georgia in Mercer is the only private university in Georgia with NCAA Division I membership. Stetson, located in DeLand, Fla., will return to the football gridiron for the first time in 57 years after a 2011 decision to reinstate the program. The Hatters last competed in football during the 1956 season, however the program s roots can be traced back to the first organized football game played in Florida. With the addition of Mercer and Stetson, the Pioneer Football League expands is footprint in the Southeast where they will join current members Campbell, Davidson, Jacksonville and Morehead State. They also continue the PFL s tradition of attracting institutions beginning a football program who are committed to the principles of the league s model, which began with Jacksonville in 1998 and continued with Campbell s addition in The league, which began with four members upon its inception in 1991, will expand to 12 members in With the additional growth, the league foresees increased scheduling opportunities for its members which should further limit the impact of travel-related costs. To that end, league members recently agreed to implement an eight-game conference schedule beginning with the 2013 campaign, but have not determined the schedule s structure at this time. PAGE 3
