2 The 1964 L'Ami's arrive this week! Merry Christmas from last year's staff. Monday, December 14, 1964 Volume 77, No. 5 NEWBERG, OREGON Eight Chosen To Who's Who Eight George Fox students have been chosen to appear in the national "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges". The selection was revealed to the students last week by the publication. They were selected after having been nominated by the college faculty committee and student vote. Seniors receiving the honor were Dave Brown, Nick Maurer, Harold Clark, and College Trustees Meet In GF Board Sessions The trustees of George Pox college held their semiannual board meetings a week ago Friday and Saturday. Many important issues to the college were discussed and some decisions were reached. The trustees met Friday for a workshop with the members of the new Oregon Yearly Meeting of Friends board of general education. Saturday morning the trustees adjourned to their committees which were to bring recommendations to the entire board that afternoon. After dinner they reconvened and listened to proposals. The academic affairs committee under Allen Hadley received the support of the board in the approval of research done by Professor Harvey Campbell in the area of launching a program of international study. This committee also discussed the implications of GFC's new accreditation standing. Budget Presented The committee on property and finance under Dr. Homer Board Grants GF New Accreditation The month of September marked the visitation to George Fox college of a committee conducting an investigation of the campus. The committee reported this month to the Higher Commission of the regional accrediting association for Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools. George Fox came out with a renewal of accreditation for another three years. George Fox was first accredited in 1959 for a term of two years after the condition of a Self-Study for one year. This Self-Study analyzed every asspect of college life. This accreditation was extended in 1961 to three years with the stipulation that the college would submit yearly progress reports. In this latest renewal that stipulation has been removed. The Higher Commission stated that, "Progress made at George Fox college In building and general development is astounding." The commission was also impressed by the million dollar endowment fund which enables the college to secure loans for construction. They did indicate however, that the enrollment was still a cause for concern and that the drop-out rate of students between the freshman and senior years was far too great. They mentioned that the rate of growth of the Shambaugh library \n the addition of materials needed to be speeded up. President Ross was pleased with the remarks made by the accrediting association and said, "This is the first time that we have had so many commendations in comparison to the demands and challenges given to us." Hester presented a budget for the coming year. This committee is also planning for a new dormitory for the fall of The committee on religious life and student affairs received the support of the board on their motion to petition for membership in the Oregon Collegiate Conference. This committee also discussed longrange personnel which might include a Dean of Men, a campus chaplain, and more testing and guidance personnel. The board approved the committee- on development's motion to add more full time personnel to help Denver Headrick as soon as possible. The board also agreed to, increase the number of trustees from 3 to 42. Among those who attended the board meetings were Mr. Philip Martin from La Habra, California; A. R. Orland of Berkeley, California; and Rev. Glen Rinard from Sunnyside, California. Phil Morrin. Juniors Howard Macy, Carolyn Hampton, Oae Martin, and Jon Newkirk were also chosen. The selection of the students for 'Who's Who is based on leadership, scholarship, participation, citizenship, service, and future promise. The faculty committee first screens students and limits the selection. The student body then votes on the candidates and the list of nominees is submitted to Who's Who where the final selection is made. Seniors Selected Dave Brown, senior, is from Citrus Heights, California and is a Psychology - Sociology major. He is planning to graduate this June and go on to Western Evangelical Seminary for further study. Dave is marrying Nancy Ross in June. His plans then include going into Christian Service. While at George Fox he has served as vice-president of the sophomore class, junior class president, president of SMA, and is currently the vice-presiident of the ASGFC. Last summer Dave served as assistant minister of the Anaheim Friends church in California and he has served as sponsor of the Sherwood high school CE. Nick is also a Californian, coming from Oakland. He will graduate this June with a Religion-Philosophy degree. Nick's plans also include marriage this June. He and Alice Hampton plan on attending language school in Costa Rica and from there serving on the mission field in Peru, Nick feels that this is a high honor and "I am glad the GF nominees were accepted." "Scotty" is preparing for the ministry and plans to attend either graduate school or seminary after this June's graduation. He comes from Haviland, Kansas where he attended Friends Bible college. He is also a Religion-Philosophy major. Harold has sung lead tenor with the Kingsmen Quartet for four years. He served as student director of the a cappeua at FBC and is a member at George Fox. Scotty earned the title of valedictorian of his class at FBC and is a member of PI Gamma Sigma at GF. He is also vice-president of the seniir class and is in charge of deputation for the SCU. "Being elected into the Who's Who is a real honor for me. It helps make me feel that all the hours spent pouring over the textbooks have been worthwhile." The final senior on the list is Phn Morrill. Phil is a biology major from Wenatchee, Washington. He is serving as the Director of Student Organizations at GF. His plans include serving as a medical missionary in Latin America and marriage to finance' Koneta Wilkins. Phil was the recipient of the Crown Zellerbach scholarship and a National Science Founda summer study grant He is active in both music and drama at George Fox. Local Junior Carolyn Hampton is the only Oregonian on the Who's Who list from GFC. She is a junior and comes from her hometown of Newberg. Carolyn is presently serving as the secretary for the ASGFC. Plans include teaching in the elementary grades. To do this she will attend OCE on a joint degree program next year. Presently she is a member of Pi Gamma Sigma and Gold Q. LASI year she was page editor of The Crescent. Carolyn was very surprised upon receiving the award and feels that it will be a real "challenge to live up to it." The other female member of the entourage is The Crescent editor Gae Martin. Besides serving as editor, she is a member of the Intensified Studies program. Gae is a junior from Fresno, California majoring in history. She hopes to teach history and speech on the high school or college level. Gae has served as secretary of the Athenians and is a member of Delta Psi Omega, the dramatic society. She has won awards for GFC on the Forensics squad and is a member of the team this year. Her plans include graduate school after graduating from George Fox. '1 appreciate the confidence which has been bestowed upon me and am pleasantly surprised at being chosen to represent George Fox college in this way. May God be glorified In those things which we do for Him." L'Ami Editor Junior Howard Macy comes from Wheaton, Illinois as a Religion-Philosophy major. He is studying for the ministry in the Friends church. Howard is also an editor and a member of the Intensified Studies program. His editorship is of the L'Ami. He led the sophomore class as president and is vice-president of Circle K. Howard is a member of the Youth Accent team and is on deputation work. He has received numerous music awards and is a member of Pi Gamma Sigma. Said Howard: 'This certainly is a great honor, but I think that more than anything else it speaks of the goodness of God. Anything I am or seem to have accomplished have been through His grace and power." The fourth Callfornian receiving Who's Who recognition is Jon Newkirk from Yorba Linda. Jon is a biology major planning to enter medical school. He holds the position of Director of Student Activities for the ASGFC and last year was chosen as Athlete of the Year. A four-sport athlete, Jon lists football, basketball, track, and baseball. He has been captain of the football team for three years and is president of the Foxmen. His freshman year Jon was a justice on the ASGFC Supreme Court. As a member of the pep band and a cappella choir, Jon has participated in deputation work. As Director of Activities he is chairman of the social committee, Bruin Junior committee, and intramural council. "I was very surprised and pleased to hear that I had been selected," said Jon. "I don't believe any person qualifies for such an honor on self alone. College is a team effort and others of the team are as responsible as the one receiving the honor." The Who's Who book will be published later in the year and the George Fox representatives will be listed along with those from other colleges. As the student body grows the number of representatives will increase.

4 By Meredith Youngren "ARE STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES AT GEORGE FOX ADEQUATE?" Students, picked at random, gave the following reactions: TIM MERRISS "I think the nurse should be here more often. But other than this, they are quite adequate." VANCE TAYLOR "We might have a nurse on full time. All she does is give you cold pills." BARB JONES "I've had a hard time finding the nurse in when I needed her." DWIGHT KIMBERLY "I think it's rather ridiculous to have to get her out of bed when you're sick and go to the dining hall and contaminate other people. The nurse should be able to come to your room to see if you are seriously sick." JERRY SHIELDS "It seems like the system is set up fairly well for the situation we are in. Consideration should be made to the amount of money allotted to this health service. I would even go as fas as to say that it is comparable to the medical services provided by the United States Government for the armed forces, although a better system of emergency care could be set up." SNOW THORNSBERRY "I think the nurse is very kind, considerate, helpful and a very thoughtful person. You must tell her what is wrong with you in full detail and then she can take the proper steps to help you. You should show the courtesy of being honest with her about your ailments if she is to help you with the proper treatment." BARBARA GEORKE "They are extremely thorough." NANCY CROCKETT "I find it easier to go to a doctor because they more accurately diagnose what is wrong with you. The theory here is. 'keep them up and keep them going.' Most doctors disagree with this plan. If you're sick, you should not have to get out of bed to go get an excuse. You are old enough and responsible enough to know when you are ill enough to skip classes." MARY GOODMAN "They seem to have all of the necessary equipment. The nurse seems to be real concerned and she has a good attitude toward helping people." RALPH GRIFFIN "I think the nurse and the head cook should be a little more lenient in respect to the students. For example, on a certain type of diet there may be certain foods served in our dining hall that one doesn't wish to eat because of his diet. In this case he should not be forced to eat it, but a substitute should be given." JON NEWKIKK "It is wise to go to the nurse first. She knows what she's talking about and if anything is too much for her to handle she'll send you to a doctor. Better food is needled for a sick person. The student must follow the nurse's instructions or it will have done no good to have gone to see her." CHARMAINE LANGMACK "Actually, I think our health services are quite adequate. When I needed health services, the nurse was gone and Mrs. Craven attended me. She was very gentle and helpful." BARBARA MORRILL "I think the health service is well run. I have had no trouble getting in. Perhaps the nurse could have longer hours. The idea of checking with the nurse before missing classes is a good deterrent for skipping classes just for the sake of skipping. The dining hall is not set up to provide a hot tray to take out. I'm not sure how this could be improved, but I think the present system is the best that can be done under he circumstances." Under the direction of Ernest Lichti, the 65 voice choir, assissted by a small brass ensemble, began the program with "Choral Fanfare to Christmas". Following the opening the choir gave Bach's canjtata, "For Unto Us a Child" Is Born". Featured in this cantata were soloists Dick Edmundson, Janet Sweatt, and Marlon Smith. GF Campus Bows To Season Cheer The Christmas spirit reached its peak on campus last week with the decoration of college buildings and with Christmas parties. Circle K decorated the student Union, the dining hall staff the dining hall, and residents decorated their dormitories. The dormitories held their Christmas parties last night after church services. At Pennington hall the evening was headed up by Marian Smith. Refreshments w e r e served throughout the evening while the singing of Christmas carols was alternated with entertainment. Bob Schnelter and Marian Smith sang a duet, "Silver Bells", Sue Boyce read "The Night Before Christmas," Gae Martin presented "The Christmas Story", Marian Smith sang "I'll be Home for Christmas", and Dean Louthan completed the entertainment with "O Holy Night." A gift was then presented to the Craven's. Jane Stinson was in charge of the party at Edwards hau. It started off with refreshments and a program of entertainment. The Kingsmen Quartet sang, Gae Martin gave a reading, Bob Schnelter and Janet NewMyer sang solos and Terri Kunkel was in charge of a skit. Santa Claus came for a visit and passed out gifts for everyone. Christmas records were played and the group sang carols. The Edwards party was highlighted by a twenty-foot tree and colored lights. The dining hall staff had their party on the afternoon of December 5. Part of the time was spent in decorating the tree and decorating the rest of the hall. Santa paid his visit and had everyone sit on his knee and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. The party concluded with the exchanging of gifts. Mr. Dennis Hagan, director of the newly organized band, led the 15 piece brass choir in, "Christmas Serenade". The full band made up of 3 instruments, followed the brass group with "Two Songs for Christmas". The band is comprised of GF students with the assistance of Mrs. Cristobal Laurlnger, Mrs. Janet Hagan, and Mr. Lichti, all faculty members; and Mr. Martin Bliefernich, Mr. Jamie Sandoz, Mr. Bob Lauringer, and Mr. Robert Flscus, participants from the community. The concert was concluded with Willan/s cantata, "The Mystery of Bethlehem", sung by the choir. Soloists were Mrs. Hagan, Philip Morrill, and Ken Simmons. Both cantatas were accompanied by Mrs1. Reynolds on the piano and organ while part of the later cantata was accompanied by Miss Dorothy Oppenlander on her harp. VWfcft gm»4+! 5 >v#c^ wu& Ki^ttc' In their first encounter of the year, Coach Haskell's hardwood warriors made it known that once again they are going to be a team to be reckoned with in the WCCC. Although losing to powerful Cascade college the Quakers were still impressive during all but a small portion of the game. Percentage-wise the fellas out-shot the Cardinals from the floor. In spite of the team's lack of great heighth, the guys dug in and pulled down 32 caroons to 28 for CC. There's no doubt that these guys want to win and could conceivably earn the looo crown. Intramural action started December* 5 with each team playing two short games. None of the teams could win more than one game, however..the activity was not counted in official standings. Counting games will begin after the Christmas holidays. uuuiters Luse in Close Battle The GFC Quakers gave Cascade a real scare in their initial outing of the season, December 1, but finally fell victims to a last minute overtime surge by the host Cardinals. The first half of the contest was a nip'n'tuck affair which saw GF holding a lead much of the time and ended with the Quakers leading the Redbirds During the second stanza Cascade reversed the trend and gained slowly on the invading Quakers. When the final buzzer sounded the end of regulation play the Cascadians had fought back to tie the score at In the overtime period the Cardinals outplayed the Quakers to take an 8-77 triumph. Statistically the Quakers were ahead but lost the game at the freethrow line. From the floor the Quakers hit 28 of 73 for a.384 average while the Cardinals netted 28 of 79 and a.354 average. At the charity stripe the Quakers hit only 21 of 31 compared to the 24 for 32 figure recorded by the Cascade. Jim McNelly led GF scorers with 22 followed by Dale Twenge with 16. However, high scoring honors for the game went to Denny Gibson of Cascade with 24 counters. As a team the Quakers out rebounded the Cardinals 32 to 28. Leading GFC on the boards were Gary Blackmar with 14 and Jess Wilson with 9. Now that the bowl games are coming up again, it's time for yours truly to risk his reputation on a few "educated guesses." Mounties Turn Bock GF During Doubleheader The Quakers travelled to LaGrande on December 4-5 for a double header with the Eastern Oregon Mounties. The Mounties burned the bottom of the net as they downed the Quakers the first night and the second night. On Friday evening Eastern shot 52 per cent from the floor as compared to the Quakers 37 per cent. Bob Peterson came off the bench to tally thirteen points for the Quakers. The top scoring Mountie was Fred Langley, chalking up 14 counters. Four other Quakers shot in the double figures as Jess Wilson and Gary Blackmar each had twelve and Dale Xwenge and Jim McNelly came up with 1 apiece. Jon Newkirk was next with nine fouowed by Steve Moller with four and Del Meliza and Ron Heide with two apiece. Top rebounder for the Quakermen was Wilson with 12. The top Mountie on the backbarda wag Dan McLain with 13. He also contributed 12 points to the Mountie cause. Saturday Night The Quakers came on stronger inthe second game on, Saturday and trailed by only seven points at the half. Newkirk kept the attack alive in the first half with 14 counters. Top gun for the opposition, Dave Smith, pounded In 21 points and was followed by Langley with 17. Blackmar led the Quakers off the boards by picking off 11 rebounds. McLain again led EOC with 14 rebounds. Fouls told their tale as the Mounties went to the line 45 times as compared to the Quakers 23. Eastern was successful 32 Mmes while the Quakers only hit 13. This difference nearly wrapped it up as the Mounties came through with a win. The Eastern Coach Quinn was faced to leave his first line in for most of the second half. For with ten minutes left in the game George Fox trailed by only five points. The rest of the Quaker scoring for the evening was as follows: Twenge 13, Blackmar 9, Wilson 8, McNelly 8, Mofler 7, Peterson 6, Clark 5, and Heide 1.
