1 DEC 2015 Volume XIV Number In Review As we close the 2015 year, NAMI San Diego is proud to say, we have been making big strides towards a mentally healthy community. Thank you to the contributions and dedication of all our volunteers, active members, program participants, and the San Diego County community members. The th Annual San Diego County NAMI Walk had over 5,000 walkers & runners, and over 70 vendors in our Health & Wellness Expo dedicated to reducing the stigma and showing support for mental health. Midway through the year we launched the interactive Ask NAMI SD website, created to increase mental health resources, online. The website is accessed by visiting We have also been expanding the Helpline, which is now completely run by volunteers, to provide users with a virtual chat experience in the comforts of their own home. Additionally, the Helpline now includes a rotating staff of three psychiatric fellows from the University of California Department of Psychiatry. Currently we are in the process of creating new opportunities for visually impaired volunteers by making appropriate accommodations with innovative technologies to increase the reach of mental health services within the San Diego community. Closing the year we held the 12 th Annual NAMI San Diego Color Ball and Inspiration Awards Dinner. Celebrating together with San Diego City Councilmember, Lori Zapf, San Diego County Treasures & Tax Collector, Dan McAllister, all our sponsors, organizations and community partnerships along with entertainment by Jason DeShaw. We saw over 200 people in attendance to support NAMI San Diego in raising awareness about mental illness in San Diego County. We look forward to another year full of excitement with new supporters, long-time partners, and organizations going into 2016, always there to support, educate and advocate for people with mental illness and their family members. 4 Ramp Up 2 Work I believe meaningful employment does offer hope and is vital to recovery from mental illness. By NAMI San Diego is partnering with the Union of Pan Asian Communities (UPAC) with a new program called Noble Works, a Ramp Up 2 Work innovative project, Annie Dunlop is Program Manager. NAMI San Diego s role is to educate local San Diego County businesses on how to create mentally healthy work en- educating local business owners on how to have the conversation about a mentally healthy work environment, we can start to see real change in our San Diego community. -Annie Dunlop vironments by decreasing stereotypes and stigma that surround mental illness. NAMI San Diego s goal is to increase employment opportunities for people with Serious Mental Illness (SMI). As we know, work gives people structure, purpose and is a critical dimension of recovery. NAMI San Diego hopes to increase job opportunities that are both meaningful and offer competitive wages to those who are affected with SMI. For more information visit or UPAC at In Our Own Voice In November, NAMI San Diego held a training session for the NAMI Signature Program, In Our Own Voice (IOOV). IOOV began as part of a movement within NAMI to further involve individuals in peer education about mental illness. In the training, the Presenters learned how to craft and comfortably tell their story of recovery, make new connections, and gain the benefit of additional insight into their unique personalities. IOOV allows Presenters to share their lived experiences with mental illness through a series of five segments to a wide variety of audiences including providers, family members, educators, students, law enforcement personnel, politicians and members of faith communities. The program is dedicated to the support, education and growth of Presenters. The personal educational component of the program helps people living with mental illness to grow and learn from one another. The power of IOOV is based on the sharing of journeys. When Presenters share their stories of recovery, they offer hope and education, open minds and changing attitudes about mental illness. The IOOV program is active in 39 states and has been witnessed by more than 270,000 audience members! The goal of IOOV is to help reduce the stigma of mental illness and convey the message that Yes, recovery is possible! NAMI San Diego s most recent graduates of the In Our Own Voice training and trainers, Deanna Ross and Diana Waugh. 4 N A M I S A N D I E G O
