3 What is Sea Grant? In 1963, Prof. Athelstan Spilhaus at the University of Minnesota first suggested the idea of establishing Sea Grant colleges in the universities that wished to develop coastal programs. He drew parallels with the land-grant college systems, which he claimed was one of the best investments this nation ever made. Sea Grant was founded in 1966.

5 Sea Grant Mission The mission of Sea Grant is to apply university-based research and technologies to issues relating to responsible use of coastal resources. In this role, extension professionals serve as the messengers. They make sure that information generated by the research community makes its way into the hands of those who need it. Neutral brokers of Information. The Sea Grant Extension ideal is to be a neutral source of science-based information.

6 Univ. of Wisconsin Sea Grant Started in 1968, Wisconsin Sea Grant was program in the Great Lakes region and among the first programs in the nation. Headquartered at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the institute is housed in the Graduate School, Aquatic Sciences Center. 7 WI Coastal GIS Applications Project The Wisconsin Coastal GIS Applications Project is a cooperative partnership between UW Sea Grant and the Land Information and Computer Graphics Facility at UW-Madison. It started in Its mission is to teach the application of geospatial technologies to support sustainable management of Great Lakes coastal resources. Leverages the $150M investment in the Wisconsin Land Information Program. The primary audience has been local, regional, and state government professionals.

11 Coastal Natural Hazards Coastal Recession Rate Mapping. As part of the Lake Michigan Coastal Damages Study funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, historical digital orthophotos and current and historical mapping of bluff tops and toes were developed for 7 counties.

12 Coastal Natural Hazards Coastal Visualization. Information collected about coastal processes is often very technical in nature and difficult for coastal landowners to understand. This project integrates animation, aerial photography, pictures, charts, and text to help the public better understand coastal processes and the need for development setbacks.
