1 THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON WOMEN S CLUB Established in 1923 Peggy Walchalk, Editor / Spring 2016 Scholarship Fundraiser Time, Talent, and Treasures Silent Auction On Sunday, April 17, 2016, the UAWC Scholarship committee hosted the annual Spring Scholarship Fundraiser chaired by Molly McBurney. The event was a silent auction and 20-Question guessing game, wine and heavy hors d oeuvres at the Bit-Factory, part of the Akron Global Business Accelerator in downtown Akron. Seventeen people were in attendance and the committee raised $ for the scholarship fund. Thanks to all for their generous contributions! Tour Group Event What: Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Trip When: Wednesday, September 7, 2016 Where: From Akron Northside Station to Peninsula and return Why: An excursion to view the Cuyahoga Valley National Park sights on trip and enjoy lunch at the Winking Lizard in Peninsula. Departure time is 10:50 a.m. from Akron Northside Station, 27 Ridge Street (take N. Main Street which becomes N. Howard Street; Ridge is just off N. Howard) and arriving Peninsula at 11:40 a.m. Southbound trains depart at 1:45 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Tickets are to be purchased at Northside Station with cash or major credit cards (no checks) 30 minutes in advance of departure. Cost is $15 for adults (persons 55+ can get $2 off with proof of age). An audio tour is offered through headphones. Parking is free at the station but arrive 1/2 hour before departure to ensure a parking space. Friends and family are welcome to join us. 5 Women s Club News and Notes An Open House Remembrance for Alfred Anderson will be held on August 28, 2016 (1-4 p.m.) at The Carriage House at Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, 714 N. Portage Path, Akron, OH Alfred was a UA Professor Emeritus of Music who taught voice and opera for 35 years at The University of Akron. He was active in the community and Professional arts for thirty-one years. Alfred leaves his wife of 45 years, Sally Ann Anderson and three children.
