1 WELCOME TO AAUW-LAS CRUCES, INC The Las Cruces branch was founded in 1923 and is the oldest branch in the state of New Mexico. We pride ourselves on our varied activities and service to the community. Our current membership stands at 106, making us the largest branch in the state. Given our position on the New Mexico/Texas/Mexico border, we are uniquely equipped for involvement in regional, national, and international issues affecting women and girls. Our monthly programming reflects this involvement. For several years, many of our programs have addressed border issues. This theme is now being followed state-wide. We welcome members who believe in our mission of advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Membership is open to women and men who have at least an associates Cinco de Mayo Festivities degree or equivalent from an accredited institution. You will find our meetings timely and interesting. Our interest groups are wonderful ways to meet like-minded people in a variety of activities. Please review our activities and plan to join us. It will be the beginning of a remarkable relationship! Carolyn Garfein In June, 2012, our branch hosted the 2012 AAUW-NM State Convention. Titled 100 Years of New Mexico Women, the convention celebrated the contributions that women have made to New Mexico since statehood was achieved in We were honored to have AAUW President Carolyn Garfein as our national representative; Dr. Jo Tice Bloom, AAUW-LC member and New Mexico history expert as our keynote speaker; and Dr. Barbara Couture, then-president of NMSU, as our luncheon speaker. We also had very informative panels and workshops presented by prominent women from NMSU and the Las Cruces community. Our attendance far exceeded our expectations, with 76 registered attendees from throughout the state. We were also joined by our two representatives to the NCCWSL (National Conference for College Women Student Leaders) held at The University of Maryland, College Park in May/June These students, Flor Ogaz and Reyna Caro, were the first NMSU students ever selected to attend this conference. Both women are affiliated with the NMSU College Migrant, which helps students from farm worker families to attend college. The students attended the convention luncheon, and were seated with Carolyn Garfein, Barbara Couture, AAUW-NM Co-president Shelley Rossbach, and AAUW NCCWSL representative Karyl Lyne. It was a very informative and enjoyable experience for all. D.B. 3 GIRLS CAN!! Saturday, March 2, A.M. to 12 Noon GIRLS CAN!! encourages middle school girls to explore several careers and gives parents information to help their daughters achieve their goals. The half-day workshop brings girls together with talented career women from the greater Las Cruces area. Typically there are 25 to 30 careers represented from Dentist and Engineer to Judge, Border Patrol Agent, and Veterinarian. s spend the majority of the workshop involving the girls in a hands-on activity related to each career. Girls also receive information on educational requirements related to the careers. The major purpose of this project is to encourage girls to continue their education as far as possible. We want girls and their parents to realize that higher education is a possibility. Parents also attend a series of workshops, which focus on building self-esteem, drugs and gangs awareness, health and education challenges in the early teen years and advance planning for college. Girls participate in a veterinary workshop during the Girls Can!! Career Exploration Conference. GIRLS CAN!! requires many volunteers and hours of preparation to make it a success. Members' talents can be applied in a variety of projects during the next few months' preparation. We particularly need people to serve in school outreach and coordination of breakfast, including food procurement and serving. The day of the event, we need approximately 45 volunteers to work with registration and serve as facilitators for our presenters. As we prepare to offer this opportunity to every 6th grade girl in Doña Ana County for the 18th year, we encourage your participation in this fun, educational, and challenging effort.
