1 Editor: Simon Wood, Asst Editor Lorrie Capasso Web Site: greatcypress.com POC: Chad Reid, Board of Directors Happy 4th July Here are some interesting facts you may not know about this day 1. Congress made Independence Day an official unpaid holiday for federal employees in In 1938, Congress changed Independence Day to a paid federal holiday. 2. Only John Hancock actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, All the others signed later. 3. The Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 men from 13 colonies. 4. The only two signers of the Declaration of Independence who later served as President of the United States were John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. 5. The stars on the original American flag were in a circle so all the Colonies would appear equal. 6. The first Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 8, This was also the day that the Declaration of Independence was first read in public after people were summoned by the ringing of the Liberty Bell. 7. The White House held its first 4th July party in President John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe all died on the Fourth. Adams and Jefferson (both signed the Declaration) died on the same day within hours of each other in Benjamin Franklin proposed the turkey as the national bird but was overruled by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, who recommended the bald eagle. 10. In 1776, there were 2.5 million people living in the new nation. Today the population of the U.S.A. is 316 million. 11. Every 4th of July the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped (not actually rung) thirteen times in honor of the original thirteen colonies. 12. In 2012, vast majority of imported U.S. flags ($3.6 million) was made in China. 4 Our pets, while not human, still hold a very special place in our hearts. They always faithfully, joyfully and trustingly bless us with unconditional love. To ~ Rich and Linda Barrett - for the loss of their dog Lucky Computer help needed Is there someone in GCV who would be able to teach me how to use Windows 10 and other computer functions? I would be willing to pay a reasonable hourly fee. My skills are low to moderate. I can do s, but don't know how to 'attach' a document and pics. I would like to learn about PDF, cloud, save/file/organize, adobe, etc. I need to learn basic, functional use and how it all goes together. The 'language' of the machine and the internet are foreign to me. I am female, just turned 78, and in good health, so it is obvious that I have overcome many challenges in my lifetime, but this one is outside of my grasp without the assistance of a knowledgeable, capable instructor. Thank you Nelda Terry You may contact me at Those we love remain with us, for love itself lives on. Those we love can never be more than a thought apart, for as long as there is a memory, they ll live on in our heart. To ~ Marianne Castiglia - for the loss of her husband John From our family s to yours, please accept our condolences for the loss of your loved one. Our heart goes out to you. Your G.C.V. friends. 8 Great Cypress Village Gazette PUZZLE SOLUTIONS Molly s Saga This Mother Cat, along with her 5 kittens are in need of homes. They were found under Shelly & Dan s house after their dog must have heard them and was going nuttier than normal. Not knowing what kind of critter we had to deal with, Dan removed some bricks and we put in a trap cage. In a short time, we caught the mother cat (now named Molly) but realized she was nursing. We recorded her cries on a cell phone and set up the mother in a cage with a trap leading to the mom Once inside they were too light to set off the trap so we had to spring it manually. The first day we trapped 3 kittens at one time but the others would not come out. Had to do it all again the next day and finally trapped all 5 of her kittens. The kittens and Mom were placed at the Reid s in a glass shower and taken care of by the Molly. After a while, we realized that Molly was not feral and turned out to be very friendly. She jumped over the shower door to come to visit with us. There are 2 calico, 2 black and white and one black with white feet and chest. Molly has been fixed and is ready to be separated from the kittens The kittens will also be fixed soon and are almost ready to be adopted. If interested, please call Barbara at or barbara@greatcypress.com 8
