1 The Official Newsletter Linking Alumni, Donors, and Friends of St. Clair College WINTER 2014 St. Clair College Receives $1 Million Donation From the Toldo Foundation. Building Named in Anthony P. Toldo s Honour St. Clair College is pleased to announce that its premier Health Science Centre has been named in honour of a generous benefactor. The Anthony P. Toldo Centre for Applied Health Sciences was unveiled on October 3rd, 2014 at the College s south campus. Anthony P. Toldo, who passed away 5 years ago is remembered and cherished for his entrepreneurship and philanthropy in Windsor Essex. Anthony Toldo had an un-wavering passion for health care initiatives within the community, and his legacy has been honored on a building that educates and trains the best in future health care specialists. This gift from the Toldo Foundation is a clear sign that a community leader has recognized that the combined talent of an amazing staff at this college is making a difference as the leading educator in the province of Ontario, said College president Dr. John Strasser. The donation to the college will support its reputation as the number one college in the province for the education and training of health care professionals. In response to the growing demand in the health care sector, the College built a 100,000 square-foot innovative teaching facility that provides education for more than 2,400 students in 13 programs. The Centre produces elite graduates in a wide variety of disciplines including Nursing, Practical Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Dental Assisting, Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technician Paramedic, Pharmacy Technician, Personal Support Worker, Sonography, Respiratory Therapy and Cardiovascular Technology. The passion for pursing exceptional health care in the local region moves forward with the next generation of the Toldo Family. Tony Toldo, the son to Anthony Toldo, proudly spoke about the significance of their families support towards St. Clair College. My Father had a passion for excellence in health care in our community. With the naming of the Anthony P. Toldo Center for Applied Health Sciences, his unwavering support will live on in the success the graduates have in their future careers as the health care professional here and throughout the world. St. Clair College graciously embraces the generous donation made to its capital campaign, Foundation for Life by the Toldo Family. The $100 million dollar capital campaign is in its final fundraising phase of $10 million dollars. The Foundation for Life campaign represents the three pillars of the college which are, entrepreneurship & innovation, academic excellence and student life. The campaign began in 2007 under the leadership of Dr. John Strasser. Dr. Strasser s foresight is to sculpt the college into a destination learning institution offering pertinent programs and hands-on work experience to the student body. Since 2007 St. Clair College has experienced vital growth in student enrollment given the college s new leading-edge learning facilities, high-end technological teaching equipment, additional advanced programs, and stimulating student life. The Foundation for Life campaign is the building blocks of St. Clair College s future. To date St. Clair College has graduated over 85,000 students since its inception. 1 What s Inside 1 St. Clair Receives $1 Million Donation - Toldo Foundation 2 SIM Mannequins at Thames Campus 3 Saints Athletics: A Championship Year 4 Winning Graphic Design Free Swimming Free Skating Golf Tournament 5 Family Fun Day Surprise Proposal 6 Winners of Hackathon Alumni Family 7 Annual Giving Campaign Donation 8 Dinner Shows Windsor SportsPlex Animal Health Tech. 2 New Cutting Edge SIM Mannequins Arrive at Thames Campus St. Clair College Thames Campus is thrilled to announce that it has received two new Simulation (SIM) mannequins to enhance training for students in the Nursing and Practical Nursing programs. The total value of the equipment is $45,000. This new, cutting edge technology is part of the Mary Uniac Health Sciences Education Centre development. The centre opened in September Two important pieces of simulation equipment are now in place. Noelle is a SIM adult birthing mother and she comes with an in vitro fetus as well as a newborn baby. In addition, the Centre has received Hal, a 5 year old pediatric SIM. Both of these new installations will provide students with tremendous hands-on learning which helps build their confidence when dealing with emergency situations, and ultimately produces a better prepared graduate for the important work they will do in our health care sector. Noelle replaces a 15 year old birthing simulator and is an important addition to the program. SIM guru and Faculty member Cindy Pallister is thrilled to have both pieces of important technology added to the Centre. It is critical that Nursing students have state-of-the-art equipment to support the learning process. This will allow us to simulate multiple scenarios in a clinical setting which will provide a more comprehensive set of skills for our students. The computer aided technology allows Faculty to train students in various scenarios including monitoring vital signs, fetal heart monitoring and OB simulations and more complex emergency procedures including breech birth and preeclampsia. 4 2014 Golf tournament winners: Rick Bissonnette, Graphic Design Student Has The Winning Combination St. Clair College is thrilled to announce that Sydney Taylor has brought home a Silver Medal in Graphic Design from the National Skills competition held recently at the International Centre, in Toronto! On the heels of her Gold Medal win at the Ontario Technological Skills Competition in Waterloo in May, Taylor toughed out the grueling two day competition to capture the Silver medal. I was thrilled to hear my name called, says Taylor. The scope of the project was very demanding with just 6 hours each day to complete two very involved advertising campaigns. Once you developed your creative treatment there was no time to change it up. WINDSOR Free Community Swims Sundays 1pm - 3pm till April 2015 The competition was judged based on technical proficiency and creative treatment. My internship helped me immensely in the competition, along with everything I learned in my program. The entire experience has been tremendous. Earlier in the year, Taylor was also the winner of the Shores of Erie Wine Festival poster design contest. I have been very fortunate to have the chance to showcase my capabilities as a graphic designer, in great part to the opportunities provided through the Graphic Design program at the College St. Clair College Thames Alumni Fall Festival Family Day Our First Annual St. Clair College Alumni Fall Festival Family Day was a great success. 5 Surprise Proposal! Alysha McNamee got more than a diploma during June Convocation ceremonies at St. Clair College her boyfriend surprised her with a wedding proposal. Hundreds of students, teachers and guests jumped to their feet, cheering loudly when she gave her answer: Yes. With her diploma in hand, McNamee posed for a photo when she noticed her boyfriend, Vincent Poudrier, walking towards her from the other side of the stage. Her heart sank. Will you literally make me the luckiest man in the world? Poudrier said, before getting down on one knee. She said yes. Poudrier, 23, of Niagara Falls, said he was shaking, nervous and sick to his stomach, but that wasn t going to stop him from popping the question to his girlfriend of five years. There are no words to describe what she truly means to me, Poudrier said. I can t see myself being without her. Poudrier, along with McNamee s oldest sister Tabatha, contacted St. Clair College requesting help with the proposal. The school was 100 per cent behind them. This has never happened before at St. Clair College, said Ann Hetherington, director of marketing at St. Clair College. Congratulations, we wish you all the best. Become Part of Magnet! 6 Two St. Clair Students Win Top Prize at HackWE 3.0 Hackathon Just like the witches in The Wizard of Oz, there are good hackers and bad hackers in the world. St. Clair s Devin Pavao is a very, very good hacker. In the mainstream media, the term hacking most often appears in its negative sense: to circumvent security and break into a server or website with malicious intent. But, in the world of electronic professionals, hacking means the process of creativity: the inventionfrom-scratch of a computer program, or the clever improvement of an existing one. It was the latter process that was on display at the University of Waterloo on the September weekend where they hosted 1,000 computer programming and app-development innovators - most of them students - at the first annual Hack The North Hackathon. After the fact, it was praised as probably the largest gathering of its technological sort in Canadian history. Approximately a third of the 1,000 attendees were from the United States, and others flew in from South Korea, China, Brazil and a number of other overseas nations. Welcome to the Alumni Family Congratulations to all of the 2014 graduates! Welcome to the Alumni family of St. Clair College. Stay Connected! Update Your Records Today at Left to Right: Devin Pavao with teammates Robert Nguyen of California and Paula Barcante of British Columbia. Among that throng was Devin Pavao, a second-year student in St. Clair s Internet Applications and Web Development program. It had already been a pretty eventful year for Devin. In May, he won a silver medal in the Website Development category of the annual Ontario Skills competition (also staged in Waterloo). Hardware and software companies, app developers, website companies - all of the biggest companies in the industry were there, Devin said. Most of them were taking resumes on the spot. You could even submit your resume to a central registry, and it would be distributed for internship openings, or even just to have your resume critiqued. In the wider realm, Hack The North really served to put Canada on the app-map. That world, professionally, is still pretty much dominated by Silicon Valley in the U.S., Devin said. A well-organized event of this size, with so much corporate backing and involvement, made a lot of people realize that Canada is interested in high-tech after all, and really has a great deal of expertise to offer. I think a lot of the international students who attended may start looking at Canadian schools to pursue their educations. Says Devin. 6

7 Grand Opening of Windsor - Sportsplex St. Clair College celebrated the grand opening of the new SportsPlex at the Windsor Campus in September This state-of-the-art facility features a triple gymnasium, 10,000 sq. ft. fitness centre, elevated walking track, workout studios, 12 team rooms, classrooms and more! It is located directly across from the student residence so it is ideal for students to stop in before or after classes. 7
