8 8 NSU s Online Criminal Justice Program Named one of the Nation s Best for Veterans Once again, Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has been recognized for providing students with one of the nation s top online academic programs. U.S. News & World Report has released its rankings of top online graduate programs for veterans, and NSU s Criminal Justice program was ranked in a tie for 21 st. For more than 50 years, NSU has worked hard to create programs that provide academic opportunities for students that meet their varied needs, said George Hanbury, Ph.D., President and CEO of NSU. One segment of our student population that s growing is our veterans, and we want to ensure we provide them with educational opportunities that best suit their needs as they transition back to civilian life. Dr. Hanbury said that this latest honor is in keeping with NSU s Vision 2020, where the university will be recognized by accrediting agencies, the academic community and the general public as a premier, private, not-for-profit university of quality and distinction. This is the second time NSU s criminal justice program has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report earlier this year the online program for all students was ranked 22 nd in the country. This is the third year that U.S. News & World Report has issued these rankings, which identify programs that provide veterans with high -quality, flexible online educational options. According to the report, to be eligible, programs had to be part of an institution of higher learning that is certified for the GI Bill, be participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program or be a public institution that charges in-state tuition for out-of-state veterans. In addition, to be ranked, a school had to be part of the top 75% of schools in the overall 2015 Best Online Programs rankings by the publication (NSU was in the top 22 programs overall.) We ve worked hard to position our criminal justice program as one of the premiere programs online and I m very proud of this recognition, said Kimberly Durham, Psy.D., dean of NSU s Institute for the Study of Human Service, Health and Justice. It s a reflection of the program s faculty they are truly at the heart of what distinguishes our program from others. NSU s criminal justice graduate program is unique as it s offered entirely online. This format allows students to participate in courses from anywhere in the world and provides flexibility in completing a master s degree while providing time for students to continue their current career if need be. NSU s master s program in criminal justice is designed for those interested in careers in several areas, including, but not limited to: police officer; detective; FBI special agent; DEA agent; Secret Service special agent; Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agent; and Federal Air Marshall. For more information about NSU s criminal justice program, please visit us online at Nova Southeastern University's Masters in Criminal Justice program is ranked in the top 25 of US News and World Report's Best Online Graduate Criminal Justice Programs Law enforcement, crime prevention, and the justice system have become extremely complex and sophisticated. Our programs emphasize training and research to help students develop the multidisciplinary perspectives, skills, and knowledge bases needed by those involved in administering public safety and child protection. Students select from multiple concentrations, ranging from behavioral sciences to organizational leadership and beyond, to focus on their career and personal interests. Fresno State University Alpha Chi Alpha Chapter Former gang member shares experiences with criminology students at Fresno State By Christina Fan Wednesday, March 01, 2017 Gabriel Hernandez has worn many hats in his 39 years. Tuesday night, he was a pastor recounting the crimes he committed earlier in his life. "The very thing I said that I would not let any one do to my family, I did to them." Hernandez grew up in a troubled home with an absent father and a single mother-- an environment that lead him to a devastating lifestyle on the streets. "I remember, a vivid memory of looking out the window and seeing a guy standing on the corner and thinking, 'well that's what a man must be because at least he doesn't leave.'" By the time Hernandez was a young adult he was hooked on meth and became addicted to carjacking's-- and one day, beat and dragged a woman out of her car, because he didn't feel like walking. "I'm ashamed of that-- I remember thinking that day man she fought me so hard but I found out that she had two kids in the backseat of her car. " It was that stint in prison where Hernandez opened up a bible and found enlightenment that has led him to his current calling. "Pretty much, for the last 11 years I've been just talking about how God changed me and how I used to destroy one community and how now I want to benefit the communities." But some choices still haunt Hernandez-- like his influence that led his younger siblings to use drugs, which is a mistake he is still trying to redeem now. "I still get judged, I still get labeled, there's still a lot of obstacles in my way." Hernandez is hoping people show him a little grace as he makes amends, working with at risk youths, hoping to stop the country's future from making his past mistakes. Criminology professors said every year more than 600,000 people return from incarceration and they hope this story helps society play a more positive role in that process.

13 13 American Military University Kappa Kappa Chapter Meet the Alpha Phi Sigma Officers TONYA SCHOENBECK, President Hello everyone! I am Tonya Schoenbeck. I currently reside in the Fort Bragg, NC community with my husband and two dogs. I have a BA in Public Affairs from Columbia College and a MA in Legal Studies from American Military University. I have been certified by Dale Carnegie in three management programs. I have been certified by the US Army and University of Pennsylvania as a Master Resiliency Trainer. I enjoy volunteering in all of my communities, military, education and physical. I believe that learning never stops and I am always looking for ways to develop myself and others. I am extremely honored to have been voted as your President for a second term! I hope to keep the momentum of the last year going and to have a positive impact on all of our members. You are the reason that I am committed to this organization. I look forward to your feedback and ideas as this year gets started. JOSHUA ADAMS, Vice President Fellow Kappa Kappa members, I would like to take the time to also thank the outgoing board members and congratulate them on a job well done. We were all definitely in good hands and you are still as the board is the same. I am currently serving in the United States Army as a special agent with the United States Army Criminal Investigation Command in Northern Virginia. One of my goals during my tenure as the Chief of Staff was to attempt to garner more member collaboration, networking, and participation. We have not realized our own potential as we have hiring managers, Police Executives, and possibly Chiefs of Police in our midst so let's network! There are members who are pursuing their doctoral degrees and those who are teaching at the collegiate level. I also challenge every member to submit an article at the University's InPublicSafety blog. I have personally published a few articles and this is a great way to get you noticed, get your point-of-view out there, and a way to get active member participation. I also encourage you all to shadow a current board member for a position you would like to run for next year. If you have any ideas on service projects or just your thoughts on improvement of the organization that feel free to the chapter at apuskappakappa@gmail.com. Feel free to send photographs of you in action as well. STEPHEN DEARBORN, Chief of Staff Hello Kappa Kappa members! My name is Stephen Dearborn and I am currently serving in the United States Navy as a Master at Arms Second Class Petty Officer. Most recently I have been doing law enforcement operations onboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis stationed in Bremerton, Washington. Prior to Washington, I had worked in Colorado, Maryland and Bahrain and traveled to nearly ten different countries in the Middle East and Europe. In 2015 I graduated from American Military University with my B.S. in Criminal Justice and in 2011 obtained my Associates in Criminal Justice from Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, Colorado. Criminal Justice has always been a passion of mine and I will always seek to be involved in the field. However, next year I do plan to shift gears a little as I transition out of the Navy and pursue my graduate degree in Social Work. Hopefully I will be able to find a unique way to tie the two together. If I can pass anything along to our members, it is that one should always be seeking new ways to improve their selves, and I believe that involvement with communities that exist around you is one of the best ways to achieve that improvement. Communities provide diverse and unique insights that can open doors to a world of possibilities. So this year, I encourage you to get out there and really get involved in the community; hopefully it will ignite a new passion as you move forward in your ventures. In closing, I want to thank you all for allowing me the opportunity to hold this position as we kick off what is sure to be a fantastic year for Kappa Kappa. If you ever need anything from me, please feel free to reach out. stephen_dearborn@yahoo.com BRYCE LEINAN, Treasurer
