Coaching Staff Entering her second season at the helm of the Green Wave swimming and diving program, Daniella Irle is intent on continuing the program s rise toward national prominence. From all indications, year one of the plan was a rousing success. In its first season of competition after a 13-year hiatus, Tulane posted an impressive 13-2 record in dual meet action and finished fifth at the Conference USA Championship despite not fielding a diving team. During the course of the season, Irle s swimmers set 19 school records, recorded three NCAA Championship qualifying times, eight U.S. Open qualifying marks and turning in an amazing 286 top-three event finishes. Three Green Wave swimmers combined for six All-Conference USA honors, including Linda McEachrane, who was chosen as the league s Freshman Swimmer of the Year. Under Irle s guidance, McEachrane also went on to participate in the NCAA Championships, and during the summer, earned a spot on the Trinidad & Tobago Olympic team. Irle s charges also fared well in the classroom, with the squad posting an impressive team GPA during the 2004 spring semester, with 11 individuals earning at least a 3.0. Irle officially joined the Green Wave family on Nov. 1, 2002 after a 10-year stint as the head coach at Fresno State where she led the Bulldogs to a (.738) composite dual meet record and had winning seasons in nine of her 10 campaigns. In six of her seasons, the Bulldogs won at least 10 meets, including an 11-1 showing during the season. Her Fresno State teams broke 79 school records during her tenure, and her swimmers account for nearly 90 percent of the school s all-time top five performances in each event. Irle had NCAA qualifiers in nine events and NCAA provisional-cut qualifiers in 11 events. The Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1995, Irle coached 17 All-WAC performers and helped swimmers qualify for the USA Olympic Selection Meet in 1996 and In 1996, Holly Ganatt garnered the first All-America awards in school history and she would pick up All- America and honorable mention All-America honors in 1997, 1998 and Irle also saw the revival of Fresno State s diving program in Irle also led her charges to success in the classroom, guiding student-athletes to Academic All- American honors in 1995 and 1998, respectively. During her stay at Fresno State, the Bulldogs had a 100 percent graduation rate for athletes who completed all four years of eligibility, and her teams were recognized as Academic All-American squads by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for 15 consecutive semesters. During the season, the Bulldog team set 144 personal bests, seven school records and had seven US Open Qualifiers. Her swimmers also produced three National Cuts and 18 Bonus National Cuts. 2 The Irle File Coaching Experience Spindletop Swimming Club, Head Coach LSU, Assistant Coach Univ. of Texas (Austin), Assistant Coach Fresno State, Head Coach Tulane University, Head Coach Present Head Coaching Highlights Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1993 and NCAA Division I Qualifiers in 11 events 2 NCAA All-Americans in 1996 and NCAA Honorable Mention All-Americans in 1997 and Olympic Games participant in all-conference swims by 14 student-athletes 77 USA National Championship Qualifiers Set 79 school records while at Fresno State/19 at Tulane 169 Scholar Athlete Award winners 113 student-athletes have earned Dean s List honors Earned four Top 50 national rankings from Four of her swimmers and divers qualified for the NCAA Championships while her athletes produced top five performances in their respective events on six different occasions. Prior to her arrival at Fresno State, Irle spent the season as an assistant coach at Texas, where she helped lead the Longhorns women s team to a second-place finish at the NCAA Championship meet. She helped coach athletes to 47 different All-America performances, three individual national titles, one relay national title and an American record in the 200 backstroke. She also helped Texas gain one of the best recruiting classes in school history, signing six athletes with national or international level experience. Irle also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at LSU, helping the Tigers to a pair of Top 20 finishes at the NCAA Championships. During her years as a swimming coach, Irle has joined forces with the strength and conditioning coaches she has worked with to develop what many consider to be an extremely progressive and swimming specific conditioning program. Irle also had significant experience coaching at the club swimming level. From , she served as the head coach of the Spindletop Swimming Club, a USS team based in Nederland, Texas. During her tenure there, Irle placed an athlete in the World and Unites States rankings and had Senior and Junior National qualifiers. In 1988, she helped the former Christina Stinson qualify for the U.S. Olympic Selection meet, and in 1989, she helped place Stinson on the U.S. Olympic Sports Festival team. Irle, a 1987 honors graduate of Lamar University, is a member of the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA), the World Swimming Coaches Association and the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. She was the recipient of the ASCA Certificate of Excellence in 1989, 1996 and 1998.

Coaching Staff Lena Darnell begins her first season with the Tulane swimming and diving program as the top assistant coach. Darnell, who swam for current Tulane head coach Daniella Irle from at Fresno State, will be responsible for coordinating recruiting, on-deck swimming duties, dryland design and administrative support for the swimming and diving programs, as well as all home meet management. Darnell comes to Tulane after two seasons as a graduate assistant at Conference USA rival TCU, where she coached both the men s and women s teams on the pool deck as well as in the weight room. She helped the men s squad win its third consecutive C-USA Championship, was instrumental in leading the women s team to its first league title, and also assisted in the training of four NCAA provisional qualifiers. Prior to her stint at TCU, Darnell was the head women s swimming and water polo coach at Clovis East High School in Clovis, Calif., during the academic year. While at Clovis East, she helped the varsity swim team attain 91 percent lifetime best times at the Tri-River Athletic Conference and Valley Championship swim meets. In addition, every team record was broken several times throughout the season. A standout student-athlete at Fresno State, Darnell helped set a school record in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 2000, as well as breaking team weightlifting standards in the bench press and the squat. She was also named Western Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete and WAC All-Academic Team all four years, and received the Bulldogs Flex Award for leadership in the weight room. In addition to her background as a swim coach, Darnell also worked as an intern in the Fresno State strength and conditioning center in Spring 2001, where she primarily worked with the football team. A certified U.S. Swim Coach and a native of Spring Valley, Calif., Darnell completed her degree in kinesiology from Fresno State in 2001 and is currently working toward completing a master s degree in kinesiology from TCU. Junior Olympic Zone Championships and sent six to the Senior National Championships. The position at Tulane marks Devine s return to the college ranks as he served as a volunteer assistant at Florida State in Devine also spent the season with the Montgomery Dive Club in Rockville, Md., the season at Fort Lauderdale Diving in Florida, and was the assistant camp director of the Penn State Diving Camp from A gifted diver, Devine was a six-time member of the U.S. National Team and a two-time national championship team member. In 2000, he was named USA International Three-Meter Synchro Champion, and finished sixth in the Olympic Trials. Devine starred as a collegian at Penn State from where he was a five-time All-American and was named Big 10 Diver of the Year in 1994 after winning the Big 10 3-Meter championship. A native of Allentown, Pa., Devine graduated with a degree in exercise science from Penn State in 1996, and holds certifications from U.S. Diving in Safety, Level I, Level II, Dryboard and Trampoline Spotting. He is married to the former Liz Elliot of New Orleans, and the couple has two sons, Aiden (16 months) and Reese (born Sept. 16). Beginning her second season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Tulane swimming program is Heidi Hester. Hester will be responsible for helping in all facets of the program, including on-deck coaching as well as weight and dryland training. While her position at Tulane marks her first foray into the coaching ranks, Hester is no stranger to collegiate swimming after lettering four years at Davidson College ( ), where she twice earned All-Southern States Conference honors (1999, 2000) and set five Top 10 times in the Wildcat record book. A distance-freestyler during her days as a student-athlete, Hester ranks fifth in the Davidson record books in the 500 and 1650, sixth in the 1000 and ninth in the 200. Hester also was a member of the record-setting 4x200 free relay. An avid sportswoman, Hester set the 17-Senior age level record in the Hurricane-Man USA Swimming a 2.4 mile rough-water swim in 1998 swimming for St. Petersburg Aquatics with a time of 47:22. Also in her club swimming days, she qualified for Junior Nationals three consecutive years. A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., Hester graduated high school from the Center for Advanced Technologies in 1998 and earned her bachelor of science in chemistry from Davidson in She is currently in her second year as a doctoral candidate in Tulane s prestigious chemistry program. Another new face to the Green Wave program is former U.S. National Team member and five-time All-American diver Chris Devine, who begins his first season as Tulane s diving coach. Devine will be in charge of all aspects of the Green Wave springboard and platform events as the squad will field a diving team for the first time since the season. Devine comes to Tulane from Charlotte, N.C., where he was the director and coach of Queen City Diving since He also served as head coach for Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center and was the sole diving coach for 10 Charlotte-Mecklenburg high schools. During his tenure at QCD, Devine helped eight student-athletes qualify for the 2004 North Carolina High School State Championship. 4 4 After going 13-2 in dual meets and finishing fifth at the Conference USA meet as a first-year program, expectations are even higher for Tulane in Looking back on the Tulane swimming and diving program s first season in over 14 years, the campaign could be considered nothing short of a success. After all, despite not fielding a diving team, the Green Wave went 13-2 in dual meet action, posted a fifth-place finish in Conference USA, had three swimmers earn All C-USA honors, and another was named C- USA Freshman Swimmer of the Year and earned a spot in the 2004 Summer Olympics. With the diving program reinstituted for the upcoming season, nine high school standouts and a Division I transfer joining the returning veterans, head coach Daniella Irle has one statement to make to the rest of the swimming and diving community You ain t seen nothing yet. Our goal is to win a Conference USA championship, Irle said. In order for us to do that, we focused on four things during the offseason attention to detail, improved depth, perform like a team and add more talent. These four elements will characterize this team. We are going to be a team attentive to detail, because they are smart and sharp and can do that. Depth is a no-brainer. We went from 14 swimmers last year to 22, so we are just deeper. Our team mentality is important when you are looking at the pinnacle of things. In addition, we are a bigger, stronger team, and we are a lot more talented. In addition to a solid sophomore class that includes 2004 all-league honorees Leslie Christian, Linda McEachrane, and Nicole Taheri, the Green Wave have added prep All-Americans Tiffany Brown, Cara Davidoff, Sarah Dicharry, Katie Naglick, Leeann Laing and Sarah Zomchick. Irle also brought home the talents of Slidell, La., native Devlyn Quinn, who starred at West Virginia for three seasons and earned several All-Big East honors. I think that we are already a good team, but being good and talented isn t enough, Irle said. That s where the details, the concept of the team and the power of the pack comes into play. Yes, we re bigger and more talented, but that does not translate into success. It translates into the potential for success. Now, we just have to find the reality of that. FREESTYLE For the second time in as many years, the freestylers figure to be a strength of the Tulane team. Tulane returns the talents of C-USA Freshman of the Year and 2004 Summer Olympics participant Linda McEachrane, along with Katherine McCoy in the sprint events, Nicole Taheri and Elizabeth Carey in the middle distance events, and Leslie Christian, Jessica Hughes and Nellie Langeland in the distance events. McEachrane won C-USA titles in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles as a true freshman, Christian paced the league in the 1650-free, and Taheri was second in the mile. Joining McEachrane and McCoy in the sprint events are newcomers Cara Davidoff and Devlyn Quinn. Davidoff earned All-America honors in the 50- and Outlook Linda McEachrane was named Conference USA Freshman Swimmer of the Year after winning C-USA titles in the 50- and 100- yard freestyles in yard freestyles, and Quinn earned All-Big East honors in the 50- and 100- yard freestyles as a junior in 2003 at West Virginia University. Quinn figures to be a factor in the middle distance events as well after earning all-conference honors in the 200 free in 2003, and will be joined by prep standouts Samantha Berdine, Tiffany Brown and Sarah Dicharry. Brown was an 18-time All-American at Rancho Bernardo High School (San Diego, Calif.), and Dicharry earned All-America honors in both the 200 and 400 free at St. Joseph s Academy in Gonzalez, La. Tulane will also be aided by the return of Elizabeth Carey and Nicole Taheri in the middle-distance events. One of the stronger areas on the Green Wave squad a year ago, the distance corps figures to be even stronger in Christian, Taheri, Hughes and Langeland finished first, second, fifth and eighth, respectively, in the mile at the C-USA Championships last season. Berdine could be added to the fold as well, strengthening an area that accounted for 62 points at the conference meet. Our sprinters credentials speak for themselves, Irle said. Linda had an outstanding freshman season, and with the addition of Devlyn Quinn, we ll have a legitimate onetwo punch in that area. The middle distance freestyle is probably our most improved event this year. The newcomers will fill in the gap there that was lacking last year, and I feel that we will have the four fastest 200 freestylers in the conference on our team. The distance swims were our best event last year, and by adding Berdine to Loo (Christian) and the rest of our milers, I don t think we hurt ourselves at all in that area. BACKSTROKE Last season, Tulane s backstroking unit was bitten by the injury bug as Lauren Patterson was lost for the year in the preseason with a shoulder injury. After receiving a medical redshirt and working hard in rehab, she is back, as are sophomores Katherine McCoy, Meggie Underwood and Amanda Williams. The veteran quartet combined to give the Green Wave three individual dual-meet wins and added 28 points at the Conference USA Championship. This year, Tulane will add the talents of prep standout Tiffany Brown and transfer Devlyn Quinn. Brown earned All- America honors in the 100-yard backstroke as a prepster, and Quinn will add much-needed Division I experience from her days at West Virginia. Katherine McCoy is one of four returning lettermen with collegiate experience in the backstroke. During the campaign, mccoy will once again compete in the backstroke as well as the sprint freestyle events.

We felt we were a little weak in our sprint backstroke last year, Irle said. Lauren Patterson is back and we brought in some help. Now, we are six-deep in both the 100 and 200, and that will help us in all our meets this year. The addition of Tiffany Brown will be a valuable asset to the team from a relay perspective as well. BREASTSTROKE The Green Wave return sophomores Maureen Quinn and Linda McEachrane among the breaststrokers, who combined to post three individual wins and 17 points at the C-USA meet. Quinn was the workhorse for Tulane as the only true breaststroker, and McEachrane earned third-team all-conference honors in the 100 breast. Joining the foray for the upcoming season are freshmen Samantha Berdine, Jamie Shufflebarger and Sarah Zomchick. Berdine brings solid club experience, Shufflebarger was a consolation finalist in the 100 and 200 breast at the 1999 and 2003 Pan American games as a member of the Virgin Islands World Championship team, and Zomchick won a Delaware state title in the 100 breast at Newark High. We had very little depth in the breaststroke last year, but I think we really helped ourselves here in the recruiting process, Irle said. We have Maureen Quinn coming back and she is the one we will lean on, and Linda will continue to help us. We have three freshmen here, but I am not overly concerned about that. This might be the pivotal event for us. BUTTERFLY A year ago, Tulane had just two swimmers with experience racing butterfly. This year, the Green Wave has three veteran flyers on its roster and has added a glut of talented newcomers at the position. Taylor Emerson returns as the team s top flyer, posting three individual dualmeet wins and scoring 28 points at the Conference USA Championship with a fifth-place finish in the 200 fly and a sixth-place showing in the 100. She will be joined by veterans Nicole Taheri and Amanda Williams, as well as freshmen Cara Davidoff, Leeann Laing, Katie Naglick and Jamie Shufflebarger. Rookies Davidoff and Laing bring All-American rèsumès to the Green Wave, Shufflebarger adds international experience, and Naglick qualified for the Michigan State Championships in the 100 fly. Fly was an event that we were strong in last year, but lacked depth, Irle said. This year, we have filled in some gaps. Taylor Emerson is our No. 1 returnee, but she needs some help. We are still not as deep as we would like to be, but Taylor, Kate and Leeann are so good, we really don t need to be all that deep. INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY In what Irle calls the second-most improved group on the team, the Tulane individual medleys will rely on some new faces. The Green Wave will feature a quartet of freshmen in Samantha Berdine, Sarah Dicharry, Leeann Laing and Sarah Zomchick. Also returning to the squad are sophomores Taylor Emerson, Meggie Underwood and Amanda Williams. The veteran trio did a solid job for the Green Wave last season, as the unit Outlook Sophomore Meggie Underwood posted one individual win and helped the Tulane relay teams post four victories in dual meet action last season. combined for 40 points at the C-USA Championship. Berdine posted career-best times of 2:08.20 in the 200 individual medley and 4:33.95 in the 400 event, and Dicharry helped her high school squad post four consecutive Marine League Championships. Laing earned three straight first-team all-county honors to conclude her prep career, and Zomchick won a state title in the 200 IM as a senior. We needed quality bodies for the IM last year, and now we have that, Irle said. Our top four IMers from the preseason are all freshmen the two Sarahs, Samantha and Leeann. The 200 IM is on the first day of the conference meet, and if you can t put up the numbers in the beginning, you really swim from behind the rest of the way. The IM became a major focus for us, and that s why we recruited this event so highly. RELAYS During its first year back in the pool in , Tulane used the learn as you swim approach in its relay events, using different combinations throughout the year. That turned in positive results as the teams showed steady improvement and posted season-best times at the Conference USA Championship. The Tulane relay teams combined for 144 points at the league meet. Once again leading the way in the relay events is Linda McEachrane, who participated in four of the five relays where she provided solid leadoff times as well as a dominating anchor when called on. Our relays will be 100 percent improved this year, Irle said. Our freshmen will fill in some gaps, and our upperclassmen are much improved and more confident. We expect our relay teams to score over 200 points collectively this year at the Conference USA Championships. DIVING While Tulane enjoyed what some may call surprising success in its return to action in , the upcoming season will see the rebirth of the diving program. The Green Wave has just one diver, freshman Danielle Carrillo, but at the very least, Tulane will no longer simply forfeit the diving points in Carrillo earned All-America honors as a senior at Inglemoor High (Kirkland, Wash.) where she also garnered first-team all-district and second-team all-state recognition after finishing runner-up in the state. I feel that Danielle will help lay a solid foundation for the future of our program, Irle said. We are confident in her, but Danielle is only one person. We will need our swimmers to help ease the pressure until we can add more divers in the upcoming years. After simply forfeiting its diving points a year ago, Tulane will field a diving team for the first time since the season. SCHEDULE Tulane will host four meets and will once again face some of the area s top programs on the road during the season. The Green Wave will battle Arkansas and the University of New Orleans at the Riley Student Recreation Center on Oct. 30, Arkansas-Little Rock and UNO on Nov. 13, North Texas on Oct. 8, and Rice on Jan. 29. The road schedule includes a trip to Ohio for the Akron Fall Championship from Dec. 3-5, the Florida International Invitational on Dec. 30, and Nevada and San Jose State on Feb. 5 in Reno before culminating at the C-USA Championships on Feb in Houston, Texas. Tulane will also host its first Swimming & Diving Alumni Day on Jan. 29 prior to its showdown with future Conference USA opponent Rice. We wanted to swim a very competitive schedule that will really challenge what I think is going to be a very good team, Irle said. Arkansas, Florida State, Nevada and Rice are teams that have been nationally ranked year in and year out, and it should be fun to get the rivalry with UNO going again now that they have restarted their program as well. 5

In the past year, Dickson has seen great progress in the first year of the campaign. Dickson s efforts to grow the fan base and establish a plan for long-term financial stability comes on the heels of some of the most successful athletics seasons in school history, both on the field and in the classroom. Tulane student-athletes achieve at the highest levels in the classroom compiling a semester grade point average of 3.0 last spring and ranking among the NCAA leaders in graduation rates while excelling on the field; Tulane is among the C-USA leaders in conference titles and NCAA appearances. 19 Green Wave Athletics With three teams winning C-USA titles, four squads advancing to the NCAA postseason, and another seven individuals qualifying for the NCAA Championships, was another successful year for the Green Wave. With a 16-sport program that competes in Conference USA in all sports, Tulane Athletics is on the rise on the field, the court, the course and the track. Since joining the league in 1996, and even more noticeably of late, Tulane has realized success by its teams on the playing field and by its student-athletes in the classroom, positioning Green Wave Athletics at one of the highest points in its history. Boasting one of the oldest and most storied athletic programs in the Southeast, and indeed the nation, Tulane will field seven men s and nine women s teams in , having re-added men s outdoor track and field to the Green Wave sports line-up after a successful campaign to reach its gender equity goals. Tulane ranks among the elite teams in Conference USA in NCAA championship appearances and conference championships and has produced more All-Americans and national award winners in the last five years than at any time in its first century. Likewise, the academic accomplishments of Tulane Five-time tennis All-American Michael Kogan capped a brilliant career by earning the runner-up trophy at the 2004 NCAA Singles Championship student-athletes place the university among the nation s best. The season was perhaps one of the best in the long-storied annals of Tulane Athletics, as the Green Wave once again brought distinction to the university, the city and the state. For the second straight year, Tulane ranked second among all Conference USA schools, and 77th among more than 320 programs nationwide, in the United States Sports Academy Director s Cup standings. Despite fielding the NCAA minimum number of teams, Tulane s status as an all-around elite program continues to grow. Also returning to the NCAA s was the Green Wave baseball team, which spent most of the year ranked in the Top 20 and advanced all the way to the NCAA Super Regionals, where they fell to eventual national champion Cal-State Fullerton. Tulane finished second in Conference USA and placed five players on the all-league team. In its first season of competition, the women s swimming program finished fifth at the C-USA Championships despite not fielding a diving program (though that program begins this year). The Green Wave men s and women s basketball teams both faced rebuilding seasons in with rosters heavily weighted with freshmen. Lakethia Hampton and Quincy Davis, who led the women s and men s teams, respectively, in scoring last year, both return in and are primed for break-out seasons. Easily the most successful Tulane team over the past decade, the Green Wave women s basketball team has played in nine of the last 10 NCAA Tournaments. Behind third-year head coach Heather Van Norman, the Tulane women s track and field team is paving the road to future success. 20 Home of Tulane Athletics for nearly 15 years, the James W. Wilson Jr. Center for Intercollegiate Athletics is a central location and gathering place for the Green Wave s more than 320 student-athletes. Nearly all of Tulane s intercollegiate athletic facilities are located within a stone s throw of the Wilson Center in the McWilliams Athletic Complex a compact area located on the end of Ben Weiner Drive, adjacent to the Claiborne Avenue end of campus. A $7.2 million facility, the Wilson Center opened in 1990 and houses all on-campus football facilities, including the training room, weight room, equipment room, locker and meeting rooms and academic support area. The Wilson Center also houses offices for each Tulane coach, as well as the Athletics Ticket Office and Gift Shop. All of Tulane Athletics administrative offices are located in the Wilson Center as well. 20 Athletic Facilities Centered around the James W. Wilson, Jr. Center, the McWilliams Athletic Complex encompasses some of the finest facilities in the region. Ben Weiner Hall highlights the history and success of all the Green Wave teams. Two centerpieces of the Wilson Center are the Henry Frnka Weight Room and the Bubba Porche Training Room, both located on the first floor along with the Student Services Area and the Gift Shop and Ticket Office. The Wilson Center also features Ben Weiner Hall, which showcases the success of all Green Wave teams, past and present. Dedicated in November 2001, Weiner Hall features trophies, game balls and medals of teams and players of the 16 varsity teams Tulane currently fields, as well as programs of the past. Another area of the Wilson Center dedicated to honoring Green Wave players is the Hall of Fame room which features paintings of nearly all of Tulane s All-Americans and is home to the Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame while also serving as a meeting and press conference area. Directly behind the Wilson Center is the George G. Sunny Westfeldt Practice a n d Competition Facility which is used by the women s soccer, track and field and football teams for competition (soccer) and practice (track and field, football). In 2001, new fields and a new track were installed at the Westfeldt Facility, resulting in a muchimproved and more durable surface for all Tulane student-athletes. The facility, which includes the Danny Thiel Track and the Barney Mintz Auxiliary Field, is fully lit with a grandstand which comfortably seats 1,200 fans. Thiel Track has hosted a number of quality track meets featuring teams from around the Gulf South, and Mintz Field provides Green Wave teams an 80-yard, astroplay surface on which to practice. In addition to Tulane teams and events, the Westfeldt Facility is the home of the New Orleans ShellShockers minor league soccer team, and has hosted other soccer events. Other components of the McWilliams Complex are Turchin Stadium and the Theresa Sofio Hitting Facility, home of the Green Wave baseball team, and Goldring Tennis Complex, which features six state-of-the-art, lighted tennis courts. Both facilities are scheduled for renovation in the near future. Turchin Stadium will undergo its first major renovation since its construction in The changes will increase seating capacity to almost 5,000 while adding many amenities, including a courtyard area outside the main entrance. The addition to the Goldring Tennis Complex is expected to benefit many areas of the athletics department year-round. Initiated by an anonymous lead gift to the department, the planned addition includes stands, locker rooms and a large meeting and viewing space between the tennis complex and the Westfeldt Facility, which would be used by the department and additional groups during the year. Goldring was the site of the 2001 Conference USA Men s and 2003 C-USA Women s Tennis Championships, and hosted an NCAA Tennis Regional for the first time in Turchin Stadium played host to the 2001 New Orleans NCAA Regional and has hosted three conference baseball Housing all coaches and athletic staff offices as well as a state-of-the-art wieght room, fully-staffed training room and a Hall of Fame room to honor the all-time Green Wave greats, the James W. The New Orleans Arena, which opened in 1999, serves as the home of the NBA s New Orleans Hornets. Tulane served as host institution for the 2004 NCAA Women s Basketball Final Four in the Arena. The newest team on the Tulane campus, women s swimming and diving, has a top-notch facility located adjacent to the Westfeldt Facility in the Reily Student Recreation Center. The 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic sized pool underwent an overhaul last summer in preparation for the swim team s debut. New lane lines, a state-of-the art Daktronics timing system and scoreboard and new starting blocks were installed as part of $50,000 in renovations. The Louisiana Superdome is one of the most amazing structures ever built and has been the home to the Tulane football team since In addition, the Dome is the home to the NFL s New Orleans Saints, the NOKIA Sugar Bowl and the Wyndham New Orleans Bowl.

Reily Student Recreation Center After undergoing nearly $75,000 worth of renovations over the past two years, the Reily Student Recreation Center is the home of Tulane Swimming & Diving. Located in the south end of the McWilliams Athletic Complex, the Reily Student Recreation Center Natatorium will once again serve as the home of the reborn Green Wave swimming and diving program. The Reily Natatorium underwent an overhaul during summer 2003 in preparation for the rebirth of Tulane swimming, including the addition of new lane lines, a state-of-the-art Daktronics timing system and scoreboard, and eight Paddock starting blocks. The nearly $50,000 renovations also included new lockers for the team and coaching staff and bleachers for home meets. Then, with the reinstitution of diving, Tulane spent $24,000 over the summer for the installation of new one-meter and three-meter Durafirm diving stands and Maxiflex Cheesboard diving boards The 50 meter by 25 yard Olympic-sized pool is equipped with a moveable, flow-through bulkhead. Along two walls of the complex, large windows allow patrons to view the varsity athletic track, soccer fields, training fields, as well as the outdoor social pool and sundeck. Natural light fills the natatorium through these windows as well. Constructed in 1989, The Reily Center is the result of the efforts and interests of the Tulane student body. In 1986, students passed a referendum to assess themselves fees for the construction of the facility, with 150,000 square feet of activity space and a variety of recreational programs. In addition to housing the Natatorium, the Reily Student Recreation Center is also home to the Department of Campus Recreation, which handles intramural sports, club sports, instructional programs, fitness and wellness programs, and special events. The Reily Center is open over 340 days a year and 92 hours a week. Patrons are welcome to enjoy relaxing with friends in the sun-lit spaces of Favrot Atrium, or they can stop by the smoothie bar for something cool and refreshing. The Reily Center has one squash court and six racquetball courts, including one exhibition court. Outdoor tennis courts are also available to members. The center s weight-room measures 7,000 square feet and offers circuit training, as well as free The final addition made in preparation for the Green Wave s triumphant return to the pool last season was the installation of eight Paddock starting platforms. The Reily Natatorium underwent a major overhaul during the summer in preparation for the return of Tulane Swimming & Diving in As part of a $75,000 makeover, Reily added a state-of-the-art Daktronics timing system and scoreboard (below), as well as new lane markers and diving boards. weights including Hammer Strength equipment, Iron Grip Dumbbells and Cybex Machines. Textrix recumbent and upright bikes, as well as Stairmasters, are also provided to enhance cardiovascular fitness. The men s and women s locker rooms each have a sauna and enough lockers to accommodate everyone. The locker room was upgraded last summer with new ceramic tiles, carpeting and a fresh coat of paint. The main gym features three full basketball or volleyball courts. In addition to the main gym, two smaller gyms are available for additional basketball, badminton and dozens of other activities. An indoor track overlooks the main gym for those who want a controlled climate while walking, jogging or running. Two multi-purpose rooms are also available for everything from aerobics to gymnastics to karate. The latest addition to the Reily Center is a state-of-the-art spinning room which includes the newest cardiovascular machines such as Precor ellipticals and treadmills with a Cardio Theater to enjoy while exercising. 21

The athletic department of Tulane University is committed to serving the academic and athletic needs of all student-athletes. The primary objective of the Office of Student-Athlete Support Services is to assist student-athletes in their efforts to complete their degree requirements and to develop the skills necessary to be productive citizens. The academic counselors within the Office of Student-Athlete Support Services assist student-athletes in their pursuit of an undergraduate degree through the development and evaluation of their academic plans based upon educational and career objectives. Furthermore, the office assists studentathletes in the clarification of their life and career goals. The academic staff extends a caring, committed effort in helping students' intellectual, cultural, physical and social development. Student Services With a refurbished computer lab and committed staff, Tulane s Office of Student Services helps student-athletes achieve their academic goals. ACADEMIC ADVISING CENTER The Office of Student-Athlete Support Services is located on the first floor of the James W. Wilson, Jr. Center. The suite houses a recently-upgraded computer lab, the offices of the athletic academic counselors, and a quiet study area. The computer lab consists of 18 fully-equipped computers with several software programs, internet access, and capabilities. In addition to the computer lab and staff offices, a general study area allows student-athletes to study in a quiet and controlled environment. ACADEMIC COUNSELING Advising Tulane student-athletes during their pursuit of an undergraduate degree is the single most important function of the Office of Student-Athlete Support Services. The staff uses a collaborative approach that involves the student-athletes, department and college advisors, and the counselors of the Student-Athlete Support Services unit. Together, this group works to develop a unique plan of action for every Tulane student-athlete tailored to the needs and interests of each individual. Each varsity sport at Tulane is assigned an academic counselor. Each counselor understands the mission of Tulane University and the academic policies and philosophies that govern the university. Furthermore, the academic counselors provide accurate knowledge of university and college degree requirements, as well as NCAA degree requirements. This knowledge includes an understanding of university and department academic courses, professor assignments, course content, and prerequisites needed for academic degrees. Only the most qualified tutors are hired to work with Tulane student-athletes. Any student-athlete can request a tutor for any course. CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS Student-athletes are presented with many challenges in balancing academics and athletics at the Division I level. To meet these challenges, the National Collegiate Athletic Association developed the CHAMPS/Life Skills program to assist universities with the preparation of their student-athletes for life after college. The CHAMPS/Life Skills program helps bridge the gap between participating in intercollegiate athletics and experiencing campus life. 22 At Tulane s annual Shadow-A-Student-Athlete Day, members of all Green Wave teams are shadowed by a fifth or sixth grade student for a typical day on the Tulane campus. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COUNCIL The Tulane Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) represents the students concerns to the athletics administration and coordinates several of the Green Wave s annual community service project. Made up of representatives from each of Tulane s 16 sports programs, the board meets monthly to discuss community service projects, campus outreach programs, and issues faced by Tulane University student-athletes. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council encourages all varsity athletes to become involved in programs that are developed throughout the year. Examples of these programs are coordinating the National Student-Athlete Celebration, planning the Varsity Ball, Tulane s All-Sports Awards Banquet, and organizing donation projects. Student-athletes at Tulane University are role models for youths in the New Orleans metropolitan area and as such feel a responsibility to give back to the greater New Orleans community. During the year, student-athletes visit children in local hospitals, work camps for underprivileged youths and speak at schools.

Founded in 1718 by the French explorer Bienville, New Orleans has evolved into one of the most unique cities in the world. A mix of European, African, Caribbean and American influences, the Big Easy has its own special atmosphere. Everything from the music to the architecture to the food is a delight to the senses. When most people think of New Orleans, the first thing that comes to mind is the world famous French Quarter. An amalgamation of stunning French and Spanish architecture, the Quarter is a natural gathering place for residents and visitors alike. And with a wide variety of restaurants, shops and entertainment, anyone who doesn t enjoy a trip to the Vieux Carre simply isn t trying. Just to the west of the French Quarter is the historic Garden District. Along with a beautiful and historic collection of mansion homes, the Garden District is also home to the campus of Tulane University. Of course, no discussion about New Orleans would be complete without mentioning Mardi Gras. Perhaps the world s largest free party, Mardi Gras is a city-wide celebration that lasts for weeks. More than 30 parades roll through different areas of the city on nearly a daily basis throughout the season. The young and the young-at-heart enjoy the floats and costumes, the beads, doubloons and trinkets and the wide spectrum of music that make up the revelry that culminates with Fat Tuesday. If you re not done celebrating when Mardi Gras comes to a close, simply wait a few weeks and begin the party anew with the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival - or JazzFest. A two-week celebration featuring the world s finest musicians, JazzFest highlights the city s musical roots, showcasing jazz, blues and Zydeco in addition to classical and popular music. Speaking of music, the Big Easy is widely recognized as the birthplace of jazz, though the city s influence can be felt in the blues, soul, funk and even good old-fashioned rock-and-roll. A wide variety of national and international musical acts regularly pass through New Orleans. 24 Known as the Crescent City thanks to its layout around the Mississippi River, New Orleans truly is a city like no other. Ranked as the second-best travel destination in the U.S. by Conde Nast Traveler s magazine, New Orleans is second-to-none in the hearts of its residents. The streetcars that still run along historic St. Charles Avenue are the nation s only mobile National Historic Landmark, while City Park is the country s largest municipal park. If tourist destinations fit the bill then head straight to the Audubon Zoological Garden, one of the top five zoos in the country, before swinging by the Aquarium of the Americas located near the famous This Is New Orleans RiverWalk shopping area. Then head out for a river cruise on a stately paddlewheel steamer, visit some of Louisiana s reptilian natives on a Swamp Tour or enjoy a slice of history at any of the several plantation homes near the city. One of the newest attractions in the Crescent City is the The National D-Day Museum. The museum features interactive exhibits on World War II that intermix oral histories from veterans, artifacts, documents and photographs with hands-on activities and film footage that takes visitors through the weeks and days leading up to the foggy morning of June 6 when the Allies landed on the beaches of Normandy. For the thrill seeker, the new Six Flags New Orleans amusement park provides fans with several new adrenalin-rush rides, as well as family entertainment and concerts from various artists of all genre.
