Individuals were honored for successfully passing test series. By the end of 2014 there were only four students to pass all four parts of the test. Over several months, the Adult Ed instructors became better trained takes quite a while to discover who has successfully passed when they test at the other locations in the District. It is also difficult to get them to come to FCC s campus for the graduation ceremony when they are from the outer reaches of the District. This was the first GED graduation that FCC has held since the new GED test series began in Across the nation, success on this new test began very slowly for a number of reasons, and the program saw no completers for the first six months of the new concerning this test. Improved educational tools also became available to assist them in preparing their students to pass these exams. Since March of 2015 there has been at least one GED completer each month (five taking place in April). Because the program serves the entire IECC District, it sometimes The Adult Ed staff worked together to plan a very nice ceremony for the honorees and attendees. 3 FCC Alumnus Clayton Hoskins to Germany for Study Abroad Program Frontier Community College graduate Clayton Hoskins of Geff spent two months this summer in a study abroad program in Germany. To share his experience with the community, he is planning an hour-long presentation with photos and narration on Tuesday, August 11, at 6:30 p.m. at Classroom West on the campus of Frontier Community College. The community is invited and there is no fee to attend. Hoskins, a cadet at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, is a Political Science major with subfield international relations and military affairs. During the fall semester in his German language class, the professor informed him of a summer study abroad program through the University of South Carolina. With a long standing interest in German history, language, and culture, he knew this would be an opportunity of a lifetime and decided to apply. With only two Citadel cadets selected each year, he was elated to learn he had made the cut. Hoskins left Wayne County on May 16 and drove to Effingham to catch the 4-hour train to Chicago. From there he took a 9-hour, non-stop flight to Warsaw, Germany. Once he landed, he boarded another train for a 6-hour ride to Berlin. A total of 19 hours travel time from Wayne County to Berlin. During his stay, Hoskins lived with two host families: one in Berlin and one in Wernigerode. In Berlin his time was dedicated solely to improving his German language for two weeks. From Berlin, he traveled 3 hours southwest to Wernigerode. For the next six weeks Hoskins was immersed in the German language, with only his host mom and a lawyer who rented the room next door able to speak a fair amount of English. In Wernigerode, Hoskins spent his weekdays at a local school working with students in grades 4 through 10. He assisted students in the areas of English, home economics, and sports. It was a give-and-take situation, stated Hoskins. I helped them with their English language and they helped me become more adept in German language and Grammatik (grammar). Outside of school time, Hoskins had the opportunity to sightsee with his host mom and thoroughly enjoyed the historical sites including a concentration camp, various cathedrals, and hiking in the Harz Mountains. Hoskins is excited to share his experience with the community. I had a great time with the students, enjoyed my experience as a teacher, stated Hoskins. This opportunity diversified and broadened my education in the German language and culture. I will always be grateful to the Spirit of Life Foundation for providing the scholarship that made the trip possible. The Spirit of Life Foundation makes awards to institutions of higher learning for the purpose of support students who wish to undertake international education programs. To be eligible for the Spirit of Life Scholarship through Frontier Community College, an applicant must be between the ages of and must be a current or former FCC student who is currently enrolled in a recognized program of higher education. The applicant must plan an international study program of not less than one month in his or her field Pictured is Clayton Hoskins wearing the Citadel uniform. of study and one that immerses the student in the culture, working extensively with or within a group or community. The Spirit of Life Foundation was established by Tom Lloyd, Ph.D. A native of Fairfield, Dr. Lloyd is a professor for the Department of Public Health Sciences at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
