3 TRI-COUNTY Application & Registration College Credit Classes Fall How to APPLY for College Credit Classes at TCCC 1. Submit your application for admission. 2. Request that your high school send an official transcript to the Admissions Office. 3. Complete the Placement Test at TCCC or submit acceptable SAT or ACT scores. NOTE: If you have attended other colleges, you may also be asked to submit those transcripts. How to REGISTER for College Credit Classes at TCCC New Students: When you submit your application for admission, the counselor will review your admission status and assign you an advisor. If you wish to register early, you must make an appointment with your advisor. Each advisor will have an appointment schedule posted on his/her office door. Returning Students: Complete the Registration Worksheet on page 4. Make an appointment with your assigned advisor (see page 3) for Early Registration (to be held until July 27, 2006). Advisors have appointment schedules posted at their offices. How to FINALIZE Your Registration 1. Your advisor should give you a computer-generated copy of your schedule of classes. 2. Go to the Business Office, located in the McSwain Building, to either: A. Pay your tuition; B. Notify the cashier that your tuition will be paid by another source. 3. Students who register or make schedule changes through August 17 have until August 17 at 6:30 p.m. to finalize registration (hold classes) with the Business Office. 4. Students who register or make schedule changes from August have until August 28 at 5:00 p.m. to finalize registration (hold classes) with the Business Office. Students who register from August will be charged a $5 late fee. NOTE: You are NOT registered for classes until you have a receipt from the Business Office, even if you are receiving a scholarship or another form of financial aid. Tuition and Fees Charges are set by the state legislature and are subject to change at any time without notice. In-State Out-of-State $39.50/semester hour $219.50/semester hour $632 (16 or more hours) $3,512 (16 or more hours) In addition, all students will be charged a $29.25 Activity, Insurance & Technology fee. Refund Policy: A 100% refund shall be made if you officially withdraw prior to 6:30 p.m. on August 18. Also, you are eligible for a 100% refund if the class in which you are officially registered fails to make due to insufficient enrollment. A 75% refund shall be made if you officially withdraw from the class(es) prior to or on the official 10% point of the term. NOTE: All course seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. 3

For many, time and circumstances make it difficult to take traditional courses. Online courses can help make education a reality. Why Take Online Courses? Convenience - Online courses are flexible. You work when you are ready to work. Cost - Online courses save automobile and other travel-related expenses. Comfort - Online courses allow your home to be your classroom. How Online Courses Work 6 REQUIRED ONLINE ORIENTATION IMPORTANT - All students who register for Section 50 courses are required to attend one of the Orientation Sessions being held on August 21 (Main Campus) and August 22 (Graham County Center) at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. Room to be announced. Failure to attend orientation will result in the student s name being purged from the course. Please Note: Courses with sections numbered are web-enhanced classes. These classes require some scheduled classroom meetings. See the complete schedule for the exact days and times of these meetings. If you sign up for a TCCC Online class, please make sure your registration is finalized on time or you may lose your slot. See details on page 2. Online courses are offered in two formats, hybrid and internet. In hybrid courses, the primary instructional delivery method is online, with a requirement that students also meet in traditional face-to-face sessions as determined appropriate by the individual instructors. Internet courses have 100 percent of the instruction delivered online. An Internet course may, however, include a required faceto-face orientation and/or proctored exams. Whether or not your course has proctored exams will be determined and announced by your instructor and will be included in the syllabus for that course. The program is open to anyone with an interest, including those who are already licensed in costmetology. Students in the program will learn all about skin care. Skills include facials, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, make-up application and more. Upon completion of the program, students can take the State Board exam to become a licensed Esthetician. Licensed cosmetologists can use the program for increased training to expand their current salon offerings but will not have to re-take the State Board exam. This is a very exciting addition to our program, said Pauline Ledford, head of the cosmetology department. Graduates will be able to provide facials and other services in salons, day spas, and even a dermatologist s office. The program lasts two semesters and begins this fall. Call for info Youthbuild Offers Many a Second Chance In YouthBuild, unemployed and undereducated young people ages divide their time between working toward their GED or high school diploma and learning construction skills by building affordable housing for homeless and low-income people. Strong emphasis is placed on leadership development, community service and the creation of a positive community. Students spend 50% of their time in the program focusing on obtaining their high school diploma or GED, including assessment, instruction, vocational training, testing, and field trips. Concrete job skills are obtained on the construction site where students learn to plan, estimate, and construct a home. The skills they acquire qualify them for apprenticeships or entry-level positions in building maintenance, carpentry, demolition, masonry, painting, and other construction-related jobs. Developing responsible young adults is a priority for Youthbuild so the program also includes active participation in local government and community affairs. Educational and job training stipends will be paid to students while in the program to help meet financial obligations. Child care is also provided for those who qualify. An instructor from Tri-County holds GED classes four days a week at the Youthbuild job site. 28

Students learn how to use machine tools to produce precision metal parts by planning and carrying out the operations needed to make machined products that meet precise specifications. Training consists of: 1) online training resulting in certification from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS); 2) classroom training with an instructor; and 3) hands-on experience on actual machines in local plants. The program continues to grow and develop in response to the needs of industry, as with the new Industrial Maintenance class. 32 TCCC Rated Superior Performing Once Again For the sixth year in a row, Tri- County (TCCC) has been named as a Superior Performing institution among the 58 community colleges throughout North Carolina. Tri-County has been named as superior EVERY year since this statewide rating system was conceived, said Norman G. Oglesby, Ph.D. and TCCC President. Similar to last year s report, there remains only two colleges in the whole state that have been rated as superior performing every year. Our students help make TCCC a superior institution. The other one is a much larger college, which means that we are the top-performing small college in the entire state, he said. Since the performance measures were introduced, there have been a steady number of North Carolina colleges achieving recognition as superior. In addition to TCCC, only three other colleges earned the right to be called superior during the first year, but 33 made the grade this year. Oglesby also said the significance of such an honor should help ease the challenge for local students considering college. I believe our faculty and staff are absolutely the best in the business, he said.
