2 Bud Patel Head of School About Brentwood Brentwood provides a modern, West Coast learning experience for global minded students who embrace the values of grit and joy. Brentwood is a progressive, co-educational boarding school for Grades 9 to 12 located on a spectacular 77-acre oceanfront campus on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. At Brentwood, student choice is a unique part of our culture and a deciding factor in who attends the School. This philosophy creates a warm, friendly, and passionate community of students from over 40 countries around the world who gain the independence and skills necessary to succeed in the post-secondary world. Brentwood offers students a unique Canadian boarding experience. At the same time, 80% of students are Canadian. Our students enjoy the best of both worlds: a traditional, genuine, boarding experience that draws from the best domestic and international students; and the unique gifts and rich perspectives that they each bring to Brentwood. Since 1923, we have worked diligently to establish a modern, transformative place of learning and leadership, mirroring the educational experience of a small college rather than a traditional boarding school. Not only is Brentwood a remarkable place to make lifelong friends while gaining a world-class education, Brentwood truly is where students choose to be. The Brentwood Curriculum Brentwood College School is very proud of our truly tripartite curriculum that celebrates student success in academics, the arts, and in athletics. While many schools boast offerings in these three areas, Brentwood is unique in that the student s experience is genuinely balanced across them: Our students attend academic classes in the morning, six days a week, Monday to Saturday. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons: ALL of our students are committed to at least two hours of fine arts although many students will take three, and even four hours of fine arts in the four hour block taking advantage of our state-of-the-art facilities in the performing and visual arts. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons: ALL of our students participate in our athletics programme, spanning a wide variety of sports, many of which make natural use of our direct access to the ocean. With this degree of involvement, our students are immersed in a genuine tripartite experience that, when coupled with the boarding aspect of the school, offers a distinctive education in university preparatory schools in North America. Brentwood Academics Our senior students graduate with a British Columbia Grade 12 Secondary School Diploma, and thus must meet specific graduation requirements in grades 10, 11 and 12, including the writing of province-wide exams in 10, Mathematics 10, Science 10, 11, and 12. To challenge our students beyond the extent of this set of provincial requirements, we deliver the vast majority of our classes at an honors level. In addition, Brentwood is proud to offer a wide variety of Advanced Placement courses that allow Grade 11 (to a very limited degree) and 12 students to challenge their academic limits. Indeed, our senior students take advantage of the opportunities offered by these challenging courses, consistently posting very strong results on their AP exams. To put students academic averages into context, below is the Mean Final Grade Distribution for our graduating classes over the last five years: Percentage Percentage of Students > 95% 3.1% % 17.7% % 27.6% % 22.4% % 15.8% % 8.4% % 4.0% < 65% 1.0% Advanced Placement In May 2016, 167 Brentwood College School students wrote 293 AP exams (it is school policy that writing the external AP exam is optional for those enrolled in an AP course); 71% of the results were 3 or better, 40% were 4 or 5; 25 of our students were acknowledged as AP Scholars, 9 of them with Distinction. SAT No formal SAT preparation is provided to students as part of the academic curriculum. Only students bound for U.S. colleges elect to write the SAT at Brentwood, and test preparation is completed independently. Among the students who applied to schools in the U.S. in 2016, their mean scores in the sections of the SAT were: Critical Reading = 584, Mathematics = 619, Writing = 567. UNIVERSITY PLACEMENT 146 students graduated in the Class of 2016: 91% are currently attending 4-year institutions, 2% are attending 2-year institutions and 7% have taken a GAP year before commencing post-secondary studies; they are currently attending 49 universities in 5 Canadian provinces, 10 U.S. states, and in 6 different nations. Earning an overall admit rate of 71%, they gained 582 acceptances from 138 different institutions in 9 different nations. 86% were admitted to their first choice of university, and 70% were awarded merit scholarships by at least one university.
