Vol ume 2, Issue 2 Februar y 2014 Octob er 2014 One of the initiatives established by the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women s Club, Inc. for the Club year is to increase the overall membership in the Association. The Greater Columbus Club answered this call by hosting a New Member Interest Meeting and Orientation on Saturday, October 18, 2014 in the Fellowship Hall of St. James AME Church. Members of the Club were excited to welcome and meet prospective new members and share with them a brief overview of NANBPWC, Inc. and the history of the Greater Columbus Club. Four perspective new members were introduced to the Club, and will be vetted to join the group.

The 5 th Annual Paint the Pink Fun Walk/Run sponsored by The West Georgia Cancer Coalition was held Friday October 3, 2014 at the Woodruff Park/Riverwalk.

The Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia were invited to participate. Troops were assigned stations/areas around the walk/run path to cheer walkers and runners.

2 The 5 th Annual Paint the Pink Fun Walk/Run sponsored by The West Georgia Cancer Coalition was held Friday October 3, 2014 at the Woodruff Park/Riverwalk. The theme was Let s Wave Cancer Goodbye. FREE Clinical Breast Exams were conducted on site on the mobile unit. There were lots of fun, vendors, music and dancing. The Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia were invited to participate. Troops were assigned stations/areas around the walk/run path to cheer walkers and runners. Club Sisters were present at this event. Tara Askew with Girl Scout Troop 50387, Saint John A.M.E. Church, DaMonica Cannon Junior Troop Leader with Girl Scout Troop 50043, Nazareth Baptist Church and Jannette Pruitt Co-Leader of Girl Scout Troop 50357, Fourth Street Baptist Church. And Club Sister Brenda Tharpe was getting down on the stage with her fellow choir members of Fourth Street Baptist Church. The mission of the WCGCC is to help reduce the burden of cancer in the communities we serve through education and navigation. Our vision is reducing the burden of cancer in the communities we serve, we are neighbors helping neighbors. Service areas include: Chattahoochee, Harris, Marion, Meriwether, Muscogee, Schley, Stewart, Talbot, Taylor, Troup, and Webster Counties, and Lee and Russell counties in Alabama.

Mrs. Jordan shared her story of courage, faith, healing, and victory with Club members and reemphasized the power of positive thinking and faith in God. Mrs. Jordan is an active member of Fourth Street Baptist Church, Rho Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and other civic and social organizations. Her testimony of faith and strength to overcome the adversity of breast cancer was moving and inspiring. This Forum was free to the public to inform the community on how individuals might qualify for affordable health insurance. A question and answer period followed the Forum and was given by patient navigators from Valley Healthcare System of Columbus, GA. Sojourner Truth As a child in Dallas, Texas, entrepreneurs surrounded Teresa White. She knew then that she wanted a career in business. Although she later considered a career in law and began to work in information systems, she eventually returned to business. Today, White is executive vice president and chief operating officer at supplemental insurance giant, Aflac, leading the support for sales, marketing and service for the firm s voluntary products on both individual and group platforms in the United States. She oversees 4,000 employees and more than 70,000 independent sales agents. White began her career at Aflac in 1998 and held various positions, most recently overseeing Administration and Information Technology as executive vice president of Internal Operations and chief service officer. Under her watch, Aflac was named to Computerworld s list of Best Places to Work in IT and Fortune s 100 Best Places to Work. Her success is driven by her ability to bounce back. I don t always get it right, but when I don t get it right, I recognize it as such and then I get back up, driven to do better and do it right the next time, she says. Sometimes, doing it right means stepping out of a comfort zone, which White sees as an essential part of learning and development and an expansion of your growth. Seeing people grow tops her list of exciting aspects about her role at Aflac. It is great seeing someone promoted and knowing that I had a little part in that promotion, she says. White holds a master s degree in management from Troy University, and a bachelor s in business administration from the University of Texas at Arlington. She is a Fellow of the Life Management Institute, currently is chairman of the board of directors of Communicorp Inc., and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. - The Network Journal, Black Professionals and Small Business News (2014)
