ESSAY TOPICS All applicants must submit an essay addressing one of the four topics below. Essays must be typewritten with a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 300 words. Include your name and the title of your topic in the right hand upper corner of your submission. All applicants must submit the essay topic electronically and include a copy of the essay with the mailed application. A. STEM - Why is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education important? What are ways you experience STEM in your everyday life? B. Changes of Life - Pick an experience from your own life and explain how it has influenced your development. C. Social Justice What do you consider to be the single most important societal problem in your community? How do we overcome this problem? What would be the benefits and consequences of questioning or challenging this societal problem for your community? D. Conflict and Resolution Have you ever been treated unfairly because of your race, your religion, the way you look, or just because you are "different"? Unfortunately, many of us have. Tell about a time you were treated unfairly. How did you react? How did it make you feel? How was the situation resolved? VI. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS In order to be considered for the Pearls of Purpose Foundation, Inc. Scholarships, an interested student must: A) Be a male or female four-year college-bound high school senior in an Atlanta Public or Fulton County School. B) Have a cumulative grade point average of 80/3.0 or above on a 100/4.0 scale. (An official transcript must be included with the application) C) Provide official documentation of your SAT and/or ACT score; multiple copies can be submitted the highest score in the various categories will be used. D) Submit two letters of recommendation - one from your school s faculty or staff (teacher, counselor, principal, etc.) and one from a community figure or employer (recommendation should specify relationship or capacity in which they know or have observed the applicant and SIGN the letter. Unsigned letters of recommendation will not be accepted and your application will be deemed incomplete. E) Verification of community services from agency or school F) Include a typewritten essay of a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 300 words on one of the topics listed in section V of the Application and G) Provide a brief typewritten biographical sketch (50-75 words) that will be used to introduce yourself to the selection committee.
