2 Discovering Texas History Conference Focus: 1836 Through 1900 Introduction The Texas State Historical Association, the Bullock Texas State History Museum, and the Region 13 Education Service Center are proud to present the Discovering Texas History Conference. This event, for 4 th and 7 th grade Texas history educators, will focus on the history of Texas from the 1836 through Teachers will be able to choose from a variety of breakout sessions addressing historical content, geography, economics, civics, teaching strategies, and resources. And the famous battle where all the (male) Texas heroes died is recounted and studied endlessly. But how many people know about the Second Battle for the Alamo, where, once again, Texas's most famous landmark was (almost) destroyed? Come hear the fascinating story of how two women made sure the structure would survive for generations to come. Teaching Texas History - A Brief Synopsis Kathy Gause, Author, Adventures of Arnie Armadillo A brief study of some of the heroes in early Texas history and the Republic of Texas. These men and women helped make Texas the great state that it is today. Land and Legacy: An introduction to the Texas GLO Archives Collection Buck Cole, K-12 Education Outreach Coordinator, Texas General Land Office Archives Land history is Texas history. From the earliest Spanish settlements, people have come to Texas for opportunity, and land was the lure. Through the introduction of primary source maps and documents of the Texas GLO, participants will learn how land influenced the history and growth of Texas. Materials are free. Teaching with THC (Texas Historical Commission) Linda Miller, Senior Education Specialist, Texas Historical Commission Ryan Craig, Youth Education Specialist, Texas Historical Commission Discover educational resources and strategies for using them in your classroom in this presentation by former classroom teachers turned Texas Historical Commission education specialists. You're familiar with how our historic markers tell the stories of Texas history, but come find out about all the other materials we have for creating interactive learning experiences. 4 11:00 a.m. Breakout Session #2 Texas Independence Declared While Alamo Defenders Fight On! Machaia McClenny, Education Program Specialist, The Alamo Four days before the end of the Battle of the Alamo, delegates met to write and sign a declaration of independence. This session will use primary and secondary sources to compare and contrast the events surrounding the Declaration of Independence and the siege of the Alamo. Above and Beyond: The Medal of Honor in Texas Kyle Schlafer, Director Capitol Visitors Center, Texas State Preservation Board Discover the heroic deeds of Texans who have received the Medal of Honor, our nation s highest military decoration. Over ninety Texans have received this award for acts of bravery undertaken in conflicts from the Civil War to Iraq. The session will discuss the history and significance of the Medal of Honor as well as reveal stories of ordinary Texans undertaking extraordinary acts of valor. The session will showcase a new website ( that highlights the contributions of these brave individuals as well as provides context about their hometowns in Texas and the conflicts in which they served. Introduction to The Portal to Texas History Jake Mangum, Project Development Librarian, The Portal to Texas History This presentation provides a brief overview of The Portal to Texas History. A digital repository for cultural heritage and historical materials from across the state of Texas. Taming Texas: The Law, the Courts, and the Texas Frontier Marilyn Duncan, Consulting Editor, Texas Supreme Court Historical Society The coauthor and editor of the Taming Texas book series will share stories from the books to show how they can be used to enrich the seventh-grade Texas history curriculum. The books are the centerpieces of the Taming Texas Judicial Civics and Court History Project, a TEKS-based program that sends judges and lawyers into classrooms to introduce students to the history and workings of the Texas court system. Noon -1:00 Lunch and visit with exhibitors (Exhibit Hall ) 1.00 p.m. Breakout Session 3 Tejano Ranching Economy: Slow growth, expansion and decline, 1830s-1900 Armando C. Alonzo, Associate Professor, Texas A&M University Ranching, an important economic activity since Spanish colonization, underwent periods of growth and contraction in the 19th century. This presentation looks at the highlights from Mexican Texas to modern Texas. Tejanos played a key role in the development of commercial ranching, especially after the Civil War. Was the U.S. Justified In Going to War With Mexico? Keith Hyndshaw, Partnerships and Professional Development, The DBQ Project In 1846 the United States went to war with Mexico. Like several wars the United States has fought, this war had its strong supporters and its critics. Compared to the Civil War, which was fought just fifteen years later, the Mexican War sometimes seems like a small thing. But it was not! Thousands of Mexicans and Americans died, and half of the country of Mexico was taken by the United States as a war prize. This Mini-Q asks the simple question: Was the United States justified in going to war with Mexico? Lights, Camera, Click! New and Accessible Primary Source Texas Film Resources Madeline Moya, Managing Director, Texas Archive of the Moving Image Using primary and secondary source audiovisual materials collected, archived, and digitized from across the state, TAMI s free educator resources are engaging and unique. They cover a variety of important 19th and 20th century U.S. and Texas social studies topics. National Geographic and the Giant Traveling Map Kim Stucker, National Geographic, Texas Alliance for Geographic Education
5 This presentation will highlight the many uses and availability of the National Geographic Giant Traveling Map experience. Attendees will be able to familiarize themselves with the many aspects of the map, its usage, and information on how to access it for their campus. 2:00 p.m. Breakout Session #4 San Felipe de Austin: New Perspectives and a Modern Museum Experience Bryan McAuley, Site Manager, San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site, Texas Historical Commission The town of San Felipe de Austin served as the headquarters of Stephen F. Austin s Colony in Mexican Texas from October of 1823 until March 29th, Local militia burned the town to the ground to prevent it from falling into the hands of Santa Anna s advancing Mexican army during the Runaway Scrape. Next April, the Texas Historical Commission will open a new museum experience at the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site (SHS). This session will share information from recent archival research and archeological investigations used in developing museum exhibits and programs. All Right Side Up: Cattle Drives in Texas Danelle Houck, Educational Program Coordinator, The Williamson Museum Cattle drives helped shape the very backbone of Texas. Roundup your students to take a step back into time through primary source materials. Discover the stories of R.K. McMordie s trail diary, explore the reconstruction and cattle boom with the Snyder brothers, and listen to one of the first white women on the trail, Hattie Cluck. This presentation will demonstrate how to teach broad themes like the cattle boom of the 1860s and 1870s through the process of exploring local history, while using artifacts, primary sources and hands-on activities. Leave this session with a packet of primary sources and engaging hands-on activities for use in your own classroom. Notable Women of Texas Kathy Gause, Author, Adventures of Arnie Armadillo A brief study of some of the greatest women of Texas, from the early beginnings to present day. Many of these women were activists, politicians, philanthropists, and businesswomen. Some endured unthinkable tragedies. Most paved the way for future generations of girls to make their own marks in life. This session will be interactive, so please come prepared to participate. 3:00 p.m. Breakout Session #5 Texas Revolution Timeline Machaia McClenny, Education Program Specialist, The Alamo Though the Battle of Gonzales is considered the beginning of the Texas Revolution, the story actually begins much earlier. Explore the events that helped bring about the Texas Revolution through an interactive, TEKS-aligned timeline. German Immigration and the Founding of Fredericksburg Lacey LeBleu, Curator, Gillespie County Historical Society/Pioneer Museum This is a broad overview of German immigration to Texas in the 1840s under the guidance of the Adelsverein. The presentation begins with the first recorded German family in Texas and ends with some aspects of Texas life that can be attributed to these Germans Sam Houston: Man of Honor Laurie Cockerell, Author: "Magnificent Sam: The Amazing Adventures of Sam Houston" Kinderfable Press Sam Houston was a man of foresight and wisdom. But how did his fascinating background prepare him for his role as both state and national hero? And how did his appearance in Texas change the face of not only Texas, but the United States as well?

In this session about artifact analysis, learn step-by-step teaching techniques, practice identifying "mystery objects" and search through museum exhibitions to find connections to historical topics. Gain skills in using artifacts to connect social studies to other subject areas, and learn helpful hints in building your own classroom artifact collection. 11:00 a.m. Breakout Session #7 Forgotten Fire-eaters: Texas in the Civil War Austin Room Richard B. McCaslin, TSHA Endowed Professor of History, University of North Texas As Texas rebranded itself during the twentieth century and beyond, the role of the state and its people in the Civil War has been distorted or lost. Southern heritage advocates have redefined the reasons for Texas leaving the Union, while most modern Texans scarcely remember that Texas joined the Confederate States of America. Working within the parameters of the state guidelines for teaching Texas history, this presentation will explore the secession movement and the ensuing Confederate war effort in Texas
7 Red River Rio Grande Myths and Unsolved Mysteries of the Texas Revolution Kaitlin Lloyd, School Curriculum Manager, Bullock Texas State History Museum What were the causes of the Texas Revolution? What key players and events helped a small group of revolutionaries achieve independence from Mexico? There are some mysteries to the story we may never solve. Sort through the fact and fiction of this epic moment in Texas history through an artifact adventure and discover why the Texas Revolution is crucial to understanding American history.
