ASHE First State Section The Milepost Dec 2016 ASHE AT UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE Senior Design Project Pomeroy Branch Rail to Trail East Annex - Joe Jakubowski, Duffield Associates On April 20, 2016, University of Delaware Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering seniors presented summaries of their design projects from their two-semester capstone class. The project, Pomeroy Branch Rail to Trail Project East Annex Project, challenged students to provide a proposal, preliminary engineering study and poster presentation for a proposed expansion and enhancement of the trail system in the City of Newark. Elements of the project included replacement of the DelDOT Paper Mill Road Bridge, development of a sewage facility and service building, design of an observation tower, remediation of impacted groundwater, and utility, transportation and stormwater management improvements. Eight teams, consisting of 17 students each, collaborated throughout the year and received instruction from professionals in the transportation, structural, civil and environmental disciplines. Additionally, recent University of Delaware graduates served as mentors for each team. Several ASHE First State Student Chapter members successfully completed the class, and were supported by professionals from ASHE member companies AECOM, Bohler Engineering, Duffield Associates, JMT, Pennoni, and WRA. 2
ASHE AT UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE The students from invited Matthew J. Buckley, PE, PTOE to speak at their October 4 th meeting on the Newark campus. Matt is an Associate with Whitman, Requardt & Associates and First State Section member who works integrally with the Delaware Department of Transportation s traffic safety group. About twenty students attended the approximately 90 minute presentation, although a handful reluctantly exited to attend classes. Matt spoke about several Delawarespecific issues and projects, such as the new Main Street pedestrian management signal at The Green in Newark, developing plans for the Delaware Avenue crossing at The Green, and the proposed Delaware Avenue bike track, as well as more general approaches to safety across the state, such as red light cameras and pedestrian issues at the beaches. He also shared a recent project in the Hampton Roads area where his peer review of congestion issues altered the proposed solution and potentially saved Annual Student BBQ - Michael Giordano, Student On Tuesday, September 27, 2016 the student section of ASHE at the University of Delaware hosted the annual student and professional BBQ at White Clay Creek State Park. The BBQ was well attended by both students and the professional members of ASHE. It served as a great way for the students and professionals to network in a casual environment. Similar to years past, the BBQ was extremely popular amongst students and helped us draw new members. The student section would like to thank everybody who came out to the event and made it such a success! We hope to see everybody all of you again at next year s BBQ! Chesapeake Bay Bridge - Tunnel Field Trip - Michael Giordano, Student On Friday, September 30, 2016 the student section of ASHE at the University of Delaware took a trip to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Cape Charles, Virginia. The trip was attended by students Steven Nickel, Michael Giordano, and Conor Matthews. Additionally, the trip was also attended by student chapter advisor Matheu Carter. The day began with a presentation about the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. The attendees learned about the history of the bridge-tunnel, including political and economic hurdles that had to be overcome in the creation of the modern bridge-tunnel. Attendees also learned about the way that the various sections of bridge-tunnel were constructed as well as how they operate. After learning about how the bridge-tunnel operates, attendees went on a walking tour of one of the tunnels systems. This included lighting systems, camera systems, ventilation systems, and even the control room. This was a great trip that the student chapter hopes to repeat in the future! Safety Across the State Presentation - Matheu Carter, Delaware T 2 /LTAP Center the Commonwealth of Virginia a significant amount of money. A common theme in Matt s remarks was the need to look beyond black box computer software and simulations to ensure that results are consistent with the data and that the most cost effective solutions are given a full opportunity. He ended the discussion by asking a number of students about their recent internship opportunities and what they ve learned from those experiences. He stressed the value of meaningful internships as a student considers the areas of the engineering field most interesting to him or her upon graduation. The ASHE@UD students thank Matt for taking time with them, as have other speakers in the past. These sessions always prove insightful for students as they explore the engineering field and give consideration to highway engineering. 3
EVENTS Hall of Fame Banquet - Shellie demoss, A. Morton Thomas & Associates ASHE First State Section held its 20 th annual awards banquet on May 17 th at the Cavaliers Country Club. That evening provided this organization an opportunity to honor and thank a few individuals for their outstanding contributions to the Delaware highway construction industry. The efforts demonstrated by this year s First State Hall of Fame Inductees and Pioneer Awards Recipients will forever serve as a benchmark for achievement for those individuals active in our industry today. The ceremony began with the acknowledgement of past presidents in attendance followed by Regional and National news. The installation of the Officers and Directors was then presented followed by the awards. The 2016 Pioneer Award P. Jeffrey Roehm, Enterprise Flasher Company Accepted by his daughter, Courtney Roehm. Jeff owned and served as the president of Enterprise Flasher Company starting in Locally Jeff became involved with ASHE as one of the earliest members of the First State Section, serving as president during the term. Jeff was instrumental in creating the ASHE scholarship program. Jeff Roehm s passing on April 27, 2015 left a very large void to fill in the Delaware Highway Industry. His hard work and engaging personality is missed by all of those that worked with him and benefited from his efforts. The 2016 Hall of Fame Award Thomas C. Clements, State of Delaware. Tom began building his first roads in the driveway of a small farm owned by his Grandfather while growing up in Lancaster County, PA. After graduation Tom began his career with DelDOT. Tom finished his DelDOT career as the Assistant Director of Construction and later went to work for Century Engineering. He is one of the original charter members of the ASHE First State Section. 4
EVENTS 22nd Annual Fred Mueller Scholarship Golf Outing - Shilpa Mallem, T.Y. Lin International ASHE First State Section held their 22 nd Annual Fred Meuller Scholarship Golf Outing on September 14, 2016 at Frog Hollow Golf Course in Middletown, DE. 66 golfers from the Engineering and Construction community attend the outing that included a picnic lunch and a BBQ dinner with prizes. The golf event this year raised more than $10,000 towards the Scholarship Fund that benefits deserving and talented students from University of Delaware and Delaware Technical Community College, pursuing their Civil Engineering degrees. ASHE First State Section would like to thank our Corporate Sponsors, ADS, AECOM, Century, Enterprise Flasher, JJID, JMT, KCI, Pennoni, RK&K, T.Y Lin, Urban Engineers, Wallace Montgomery and WRA, and Hole Sponsors, Garden State, JMT, Navarro & Wright, and Rinker Materials, that contributed to the Scholarship amount and made the event possible. ASHE would also like to thank Mark DeSantis for sponsoring the dinner for the event. Prizes were handed out to the first three winning teams as well as individual winners for the putting contest, closest to the pin, straightest drive and longest drive. Prizes included golf foursomes at the Frog Hollow, Blue Rocks tickets and University of Delaware Football and Basketball tickets. ASHE First State Section thanks all the sponsors and attendees for making this a successful event! All proceeds go toward our Scholarship program supporting students interested in pursuing careers in the transportation industry. 5
MEMBER UPDATES Training Opportunities Ahead - Gregory Pawlowski, DRBA Hopefully most of you have taken notice of education opportunities that have been offered by ASHE First State over the last few years. Classes are assembled by the Education Committee and take place during the winter months when construction typically slows down and daylight after 5:00pm is almost non-existent. This winter will be no different. Be on the lookout for notice of our first class January 26 being held in the training center of the Delaware Contractor s Association (DCA) as it has in the past. Once again Scott Lowe, a principal at Trauner Consulting Services in Philadelphia, will be our first presenter. Scott always delivers excellent material that is pertinent to both contractors and engineers. He will be discussing Contract Termination for Convenience which is a presentation he recently delivered before AASHTO s Subcommittee on Construction this past August. Our chapter will send notice to all members informing them of the class approximately one month prior to the date and you will be able to register online. As always, classes are free to ASHE and DCA members with a charge of $50.00 to non-members and begin promptly at 6:00pm. Members who hold a PE license are well aware of recent regulation changes for renewal which mandate a minimum of 3 PDHs be earned on the subject of Ethics. To aid in meeting this obligation, board members Rob Snowden and Greg Pawlowski will deliver a course on ethics March 16 at the DCA training center. A variety of topics will be covered over a duration of three hours to achieve minimum PDH requirements. DCA s training center is capable of holding 36 attendees and can quickly fill up so prompt registration is best for ensuring a seat. Light refreshments before and during the presentation will be offered as usual and are sponsored this year by Christiana Excavating Company. Stay current with relevant subject matter in our industry while earning continuing education credits and attend one of this year s presentations. We hope to see you there. ASHE SECTION GEAR ASHE First State Section has ordered a small number of these items as speaker gifts. Members can purchase these while supplies last by notifying Matt Carter at Matheu@udel.edu. $25.00 $22.00 ASHE FSS Padfolio is a premium bonded leather pad folder with a stylish silver metal accent.
