The meet is named for three-time Olympian and six-time All-American Steve Scott, one of the greatest athletes in UCI and Big West history. A member of the United States Track & Field Hall of Fame, Scott is currently the head cross country and track & field coach at Cal State San Marcos and has run the mile in under four minutes a record 136 times. Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Davis and UC Riverside will be part of the competition which will be held in the same venue as the 2011 Big West Championships. There will also be several other major meets on the Big West calendar as the squads do their final tuneups before the Big West Championships in two weeks. Long Beach State and UC Riverside will head to the Midwest for the prestigious Drake Relays, an annual event that is in its 102nd year. LBSU and UCR athletes will be part of the event which will attract over 7,000 athletes in what is billed as America s Athletic Classic. There will be 128 men s university-college teams with 1,381 athletes competing, while on the women s side, 128 teams with 1,295 athletes will compete. Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, UC Davis, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara will also be sending athletes to the Bay Area for the Payton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford. The meet hosts some of the finest distance competition around the world and is named for legendary Stanford coach Payton Jordan. A dual meet between conference rivals is also on tap as Central Coast foes Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara will meet in Santa Barbara for a dual matchup Saturday. Saturday, April 16 Was A Good Day: The Saturday action at the Mt. SAC Relays on Saturday April 16 was quite the big day for two Big West athletes. UC Irvine s Charles Jock was at it again last as he won the Invitational Elite 800-meter race. His time of 1:45.19 broke his own school record in the event and is the top time in the NCAA this season. Even more impressive is that the time is also the top mark in the entire United States this season, professional or collegiate, and is the fourth-best time in the world this year. Meanwhile, UC Santa Barbara s Amanda Moreno set the Big West record in the 5000-meter run, finishing in 15:58.02 for sixth place in the Olympic Elite division race. Her time is three seconds better than former teammate Danielle Domenichelli, who set the record a year ago. Athletes of the Year Return: 2011 brings back a litany of familiar faces across the league, including the majority of last season s major award winners. Three of the four Athletes of the Year return as UC Irvine s Charles Jock (Men s Track), Cal State Fullerton s Ciara Short (Women s Track) and Cal State Northridge s Desirae Gonder (Women s Field) look to defend their crowns. The Big West also has several All-Americans returning from the 2010 season as Long Beach State s Randi Hicks (javelin) and UC Santa Barbara s Barbara Nwaba (heptathlon) return on the women s side, while UCI s Jock (800) and the UCSB duo of Ryan Martin (800) and Julian derubira (steeplechase) come back on the men s side. CSUN Aims to Defend Track Titles: Cal State Northridge swept the Big West Track & Field crowns a year ago are poised to do it again in The men will be looking for their sixth championship in conference history, while the women are aiming for title #7 in Big West lore. 2 2011 Big West Track & Field Athletes of the Week UCD Sweeps Track Awards; LBSU, CP Nab Field Honors This week s Big West track & field weekly awards saw UC Davis sweep the honors on the track, while Long Beach State and Cal Poly took home the field awards. The Aggies had Jonathan Sees claim the Men s Track Athlete of the Week, while Alycia Cridebring won the Women s Track Athlete of the Week mention. For the field awards, Colin Dunbar of Long Beach State won his fourth Men s Field Athlete of the Week accolade of the 2011 season, while Cal Poly s Whitney Sisler was given her first weekly honor of the year as the Women s Field Athlete of the Week. Sees, a senior from Newark, Calif., finished fourth in the mile at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational with a time of 4: His time converts to 3:44.69 for the 1500, which gives him the top slot in the Big West this season and #2 in UCD program history. Cridebring, a freshman from Pleasant Hill, Calif., finished seventh in the 1500 with a time 4:27.71 at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. Her time is #2 in the Big West and moves her to sixth on the all-time UCD list. Dunbar, a senior from Santa Barbara, Calif., won the hammer and shot put at the Triton Invitational. He recorded a mark of in the hammer and in the shot. Dunbar also posted a mark of in the discus for a fifth place finish. He has now won his past three hammer competitions and has the top mark in the event in the Big West. Sisler, a junior from San Marcos, Calif., finished second in the high jump at the Triton Invitational with a mark of 6-0. She established the top mark in the league and this is also the first time Sisler has cleared six feet.
