The 49ers trailed the Titans by one game but managed to put together a 2-1 series win over CSF to tie for first in the Big West with a 16-8 mark. While both teams shared the conference championship, Long Beach State received the league s AQ due to a head-to-head tiebreaker. This marks LBSU s first conference title since 2003 and eighth conference title since 1989, while CSF claim its 15th Big West title, seventh in the last 10 years. Big West Hands Out Top Honors: The competitiveness of the Big West Conference was shown throughout the season and in this year s annual awards as the league awarded the first-ever tri-pitcher of the year and co-player of the year, among other accolades, as selected by the nine Big West coaches. Headlining the nation s third-best pitching staff earned UC Irvine s Scott Gorgen a share of the 2008 Easton Big West Pitcher of the Year honors. Completing the trio of pitchers is Cal State Fullerton s Jeff Kaplan and Long Beach State s Andrew Liebel. UC Davis Jake Jefferies and Long Beach State s Shane Peterson were named 2008 Easton Big West Co-Player of the Year for their dominance at the plate. UC Santa Barbara s Mario Hollands collected 2008 Easton Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year honors and Ryan Pineda was tabbed Easton Big West Freshman Player of the Year. Guiding Long Beach State to a share of its first conference title since 2003 earned Mike Weathers Easton Big West Coach of the Year. NCAA Awards Four Big West s Postseason Bids: History repeated itself this season as the Big West Conference sent four teams to the 2008 NCAA Baseball Tournament for the second consecutive year, as announced by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee. Big West co-champions Long Beach State (automatic qualifier) and Cal State Fullerton, both regional hosts, were joined by 2007 College World Series participant UC Irvine and first-year member UC Davis. Success On The Bump: In 2006, a Titan trio of Wes Roemer, Lauren Gagnier and Dustin Miller spearheaded a pitching staff that produced an NCAA-best team ERA of In 2005 the 49ers dominated on the mound, leading the nation with a 2.53 earned run average. After a year out of the spotlight, the Big West has made its presence felt among the nation s best as Long Beach State (3.20) is ranked second and UC Irvine (3.27) sits third in team ERA. Record Number For Big West With 50 Athletes Selected In MLB Draft: The Big West Conference had 50 players selected in the two-day Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft with Long Beach State s Shane Peterson being the conference s first player taken, 59th pick in the second round by the St. Louis Cardinals. The league opened the first day with 12 players drafted and followed that up with 38 nabbed in the final day of the 2008 MLB draft. Peterson, Big West s Co-Player of the Year, was the first of 11 49ers drafted to pace the league. Cal Poly was second among Big West schools with eight players picked during the 2008 MLB draft. UC Davis seven draftees were paced by 2008 Big West Co-Player of the Year Jake Jefferies. UC Santa Barbara also had seven players drafted, with catcher Chris McMurray (18th-Cincinnati) kick-starting a busy second day for the Gauchos. UC Irvine had six Anteaters selected in this year s draft, including 2008 Big West Tri-Pitcher of the Year Scott Gorgen. The 2008 Big West Co-Champions, Cal State Fullerton, had six selections, while UC Riverside saw four Highlanders selected and Cal State Northridge had one selection. 2 The Road To Omaha... Big West Conference In 2008, the Big West Conference had five teams with an over-.500 overall winning percentage - Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, UC Davis, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara. The league also had six teams post a winning record during conference play - a first for the Big West Conference. The Big West sent four teams to the 64- team NCAA Baseball Tournament for the second straight season and the third time in conference history being the third. The following is a list of the Big West Conference NCAA teams versus the NCAA Field. The Pac-10 and Conference USA each earned five bids, while the Big West sent four teams to the postseason. The Big West has enjoyed a tradition of representation at the College World Series, featuring a contender for the coveted crown on an almost annual basis. In fact, a Big West school has reached Omaha in 15 of the past 20 seasons. Fullerton brought home the league s first national title in 1995 and then brought home a second in Cal State Fullerton (Fullerton Regional 4-1) (Fullerton Super Regional 0-2) The Titans have won four National Titles (1979, 1984, 1995, 2004). They are tied for fifth with Miami for the most NCAA College World Series titles. Cal State Fullerton has had five College World Series Outstanding Players marks the 30th year the Titans have competed in the NCAA Regionals - 22nd time as a member of the Big West. This year s bid is the 17th consecutive year CSF has received a post-season berth, marking the third-longest active consecutive streak in the nation behind Miami (36 years) and Florida State (31 years). Clemson missed the postseason for the first time in 21 years. The Titans are now (.707) all-time in the NCAA Regionals and 23-6 (.793) when hosting the regional. The Titans welcomed UCLA, Virginia and Rider to Goodwin Field for the NCAA Regionals. CSF had never met the Cavaliers or Broncos, but defeated both teams, along with picking up two wins against the Bruins to capture the regional. Five Titans earned all-regional accolades - Erik Komatsu, Christian Colon, Dustin Garneau, Cory Arbiso and Brian Wilson (Most Outstanding Player). Cal State Fullerton has advanced to the super regionals the past six seasons - playing host in all six contests. Unfortunately the Titans were unable to get past Stanford this year, going 0-2 in the super regionals for the first time in school history. The Cal State Fullerton baseball program has provided all of its student-athletes spending four year in the program since 1975 at least one trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. Long Beach State (Long Beach Regional 1-2) Long Beach earned its 17th NCAA berth this season. The 49ers also hosted their second straight, fourth overall, regional. The 49ers were unable to make their third trip to the super regionals after going 1-2 this postseason at Blair Field. Long Beach State hosted an all-california regional that includes two top 25 opponents, San Diego and California, along with eventual national champion Fresno State. Jonathan Jones was the lone 49er selected to the all-regional team. In the history of the 49er program, Long Beach State has made four College World Series Appearances ( 89, 91, 93, 98). UC Irvine (Lincoln Regional 3-0) (LSU Super Regional 1-2) The Anteaters made their third consecutive trip, fourth overall, to the postseason after receiving an at-large berth into the NCAA Baseball Tournament. UC Irvine swept the Lincoln Regional before falling to LSU, 2-1, in the Baton Rouge Super Regional. Ben Orloff, Ollie Linton, Sean Madigan, Bryce Stowell and Daniel Bibona were named to the all-regional team, with Stowell earning most outstanding player honors. After going 0-2 in their first two trips to the regionals, the Anteaters swept the regional competition the past two seasons. The 2007 season marked the first time UC Irvine advanced to both the super regionals and College World Series. UC Irvine, who was reinstated as a D I school in 2002, was successful at the D II level; in 1973 and 1974 the Anteaters were crowned Division II National Champions. UC Davis (Palo Alto Regional 1-2) UC Davis earned a bid to the NCAA Baseball Tournament in its first season competing at the Division I level. The Big West Conference welcomed UC Davis as an official member on July 1, 2007, after it completed its four-year reclassification from Division II to Division I. At the D II level, the Aggies posted a NCAA Tournament record of They appeared in the regionals seven times and made two championship appearances. The Aggies traveled to the Palo Alto Regional, where they opened the weekend with a win over Stanford. They dropped the following two contests against Pepperdine and Stanford, to tally a 1-2 record in their first NCAA appearance. Ty Kelly and Eddie Gamboa were named to the all-regional team for their efforts. 4 Cal Poly Mustangs Cal Poly finished tied for seventh in the conference with an 8-16 record. The Mustangs record marks the first time they were unable to reach.500 for the first time in five years. Cal Poly collected five series wins during the 2008 season, including a sweep over UNLV. Brent Morel belted his first career grand slam to lift Cal Poly to a win in their final contest of the season. Morel paced the Mustang squad with a.368 batting average and league-leading 60 RBI. Wes Dorrell is tied for first in the conference with 24 doubles. Cal Poly had six players finish with an above-.300 batting average. Steven Fischback ranks sixth in the conference with 79 strikeouts. Cal Poly was forced to play without sophomore southpaw Matt Leonard and junior first baseman Adam Buschini. Leonard had left elbow surgery, while Buschini had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow last summer. UC Irvine Anteaters UC Irvine (42-18) registered its second consecutive 40-win season and finished in a threeway tie for third place in the conference with a record. Closer Eric Pettis led the conference with 17 saves, placing him in a tie for second in the Big West s all-time season highs. Scott Gorgen, who paced the team with a 2.26 ERA, owns 327 strikeouts to become UC Irvine s all-time career leader. In just three seasons he vaulted himself over Glenn Swanson s four-year total of 298. Ollie Linton surpassed Alan Belasco to become UCI s all-time steal leader with 71 stolen bases. Belasco s 51 steals were tallied from Linton s 40 stolen bases in 2008 a new Anteater single-season record. The Anteaters are 2-2 in extra-inning contests. UC Irvine tossed nine shutouts this season, including four in-a-row (2/29-3/4). The Anteaters opened the season with a 16-1 mark, a school best. Cal State Fullerton Titans Cal State Fullerton (41-22 overall) ended the regular season with their lone Big West series loss of the season, going 1-2 at Long Beach State. The Titans ended up tying the 49ers for first place in the conference with a 16-8 record to collect their 15th Big West title, seventh in the last 10 years. Cal State Fullerton claimed 11 series this year. The Titans are 1-4 in extra-inning contests this season. The Titans recorded 126 stolen bases, more than double last year s mark of 53 steals. Cal State Fullerton ranked fourth in the conference in earned run average (4.58) and batting average (.303). Josh Fellhauer ranks second in the conference with 62 runs scored. Cory Arbiso is tied for first in the Big West Conference with 12 wins, while Jeff Kaplan is second with 11 victories. Kaplan picked up his first save of his career in the 5-4 win over UCLA in the deciding game of the Fullerton Regional. The Titans have never had a losing season in the 34-year history. Cal State Northridge Matadors Cal State Northridge, posting its seventh straight season with a below-.500 record, finished the year with an overall mark of Winning the conference title back in 2001 with an overall mark of was the last time CSUN concluded the season with an above-.500 record. Sixteen of the Matadors wins were in the familiar confines of Matador Field. The Matadors tallied an 8-16 league mark to finished tied for seventh in the Big West Conference. Cal State Northridge picked up series sweeps against La Salle and Cal Poly. A 4-2 victory over nationally-ranked Cal State Fullerton on April 12, 2008, was Cal State Northridge s first road win since April 5, Richard Cates paced the Matadors with a.350 batting average, 72 hits and 41 RBI. On the mound, Edwin Quirarte (4-4) tossed 56.0 innings, produced a 2.09 earned run average and picked up eight saves. Starting in 14 contests, Phil Hann tallied a team-high 48 strikeouts. Long Beach State 49ers Long Beach State, who reached the 30-win plateau for the 19th time in 20 years, tallied an overall record of The 49ers (coaches poll preseason favorite) were crowned Big West Co-Champions after tying for first place in the Big West Conference with a 16-8 record, marking their first league title since They also won the league s automatic qualifier due to the head-to-head tiebreaker. Long Beach State was 4-0 in extra-inning contests. Playing 24 games against nationally-ranked opponents, the 49ers are against the best. Long Beach State won 10 of its 14 weekend series. Andrew Liebel s 2.22 ERA paces a LBSU pitching staff that ranked second in the country with a 3.20 ERA. Offensively, Shane Peterson ranked second in the Big West with a.390 batting average. UC Davis Aggies The league welcomed UC Davis as an official member on July 1, 2007, after it completed its four-year reclassification from Division II to Division I. The Aggies, 35-24, reached the 30-win plateau for the first time since UC Davis finished their first season in the Big West ranked sixth in the conference with a record. During 2008, UC Davis collected six weekend series. The Aggies had a midseason stretch where they went Justin Fitzgerald owns 15 saves, ranking him second in the Big West and tying him for third in the BWC all-time single season records. The Aggies were 3-0 in extra inning contests. A sweep over Santa Clara (March 14-16) propelled head coach Rex Peters to his 400th-career win milestone. The Aggies, 10-9 against top 25 teams, closed out the season playing 14 of their final 21 games against nationally-ranked oppo- UC Riverside Highlanders The 2007 defending champion UC Riverside was unable to recapture the crown again this season, finishing in a three-way tie for third with a Big West record. Concluding the year with an overall mark of 21-33, UC Riverside tallied its lowest win total since joining the Big West Conference in Despite struggling during the nonconference portion of its schedule, UC Riverside came on strong during league play, claiming six of the eight series. The Highlanders proved successful at home, going at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Highlanders, who tallied five series sweeps last season, only swept one team this season (Pacific). UC Riverside was 1-3 in extra-inning contests. Drew Garcia paced the Highlanders with a.344 batting average and 51 RBI. Carl Uhl s 54 runs scored leads UC Riverside and is good enough to rank sixth in the conference. UC Riverside registered a 7-5 mark against top 25 opponents. UC Santa Barbara Gauchos The Gauchos conclude the 2008 season in a three-way tie for third place in the Big West Conference with a record. This marks just the second time UC Santa Barbara tallied 10 or more Big West wins in the past six years ( ). With an overall mark of 35-21, the Gauchos collected their highest win total since 2001 when they went UC Santa Barbara, who picked up eight series wins this season, paces the league batting average (.321), home runs (55) and total bases (958). Individually, the Gauchos are led by Patrick Rose s.357 batting average and Mike Zuanich s 57 RBI and league-high 14 home runs. On the Mound, Mike Ford ranks sixth in the conference with a 2.96 ERA. Michael Martin also made the top 10 with a 3.82 ERA. The Gauchos were 0-2 in extra-inning contests. Home sweet home was the motto of UCSB this season as they were nearly unbeatable at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, going Pacific Tigers Pacific concludes the 2008 season with an overall mark of 14-41, tying the Tigers lowest win total since joining the Big West. The last time they registered 14 wins was back in 1990 when they went overall and 1-17 in conference play. The Tigers finished ninth in the conference with a 5-19 Big West mark. Dating back to last season, the Tigers are now 2-13 in the past 15 Big West weekend series after picking up one series win each year. Pacific won two series this year, defeating Minnesota early in the season and downing Cal State Northridge to close out the conference portion of its schedule. Nick Longmire and Adam Ching led the Pacific Tigers with a.323 batting average. Longmire also paced the squad with 31 RBI, while Ching tied for second with 37 runs scored. Tyler Waldron tossed 91.2 innings to tally a 3-7 record and a 5.20 earned run average. The Tigers entered the 2008 season with 17 letterwinners returning. 5 Big West Tid Bits Then There Were Nine The season marked the beginning of a new nineteam field for the Big West Conference, as UC Davis began its first season competing in the league comprised of all California schools. The league welcomed UC Davis as an official member on July 1, 2007, after the Aggies completed their four-year reclassification from Division II to Division I. Coaching Milestones Steve Rousey (CSUN), Doug Smith (UCR) and Ed Sprague (PAC) secured their 100th-career win in mid-march. A fourgame sweep over Santa Clara (March 14-16) propelled UC Davis Head Coach Rex Peters to his 400th career win. UC Santa Barbara s Bob Brontsema also collected his 400th career victory on April 27 against Cal Poly. Also, adding another milestone to their extensive careers are Long Beach State s Mike Weathers and UC Irvine s Mike Gillespie. In the win over Cal Poly on May 16, the 49er skipper collected his 100th conference victory. UC Irvine s win against UC Santa Barbara on May 24 gave Gillespie his 800th Division I win. Best Of The Big West Of the nine current members in the Big West Conference, five of them have won the Big West title - Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara and the most recent addition, UC Riverside, who won its first-ever title in USA National USA Baseball announced the 2008 National (Collegiate) and two Cal State Fullerton players earned spots on the elite 22-man roster - Christian Colon and Josh Fellhauer. The National roster was selected following a two-week trials period, during which time the trials participants played 10 games and had two intrasquad scrimmages. Comprised of the top non-draft-eligible college players in the United States, the National plays six games against the Chinese Taipei National before beginning competition in Europe. Colon (Corona, Calif.), who just finished his rookie season with the Titans, led the trials squad in hits (19) and stolen bases (6) while hitting.380 with a pair of home runs and six RBI at shortstop and second base. Fellhauer (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), who will be a junior in 2009 for Fullerton, posted the team s second-best batting average, hitting.416 (15-for-36) with a home run, five RBI and three stolen bases. He played both centerfield and left field during the trials. Over the years, Cal State Fullerton has been one of USA Baseball s major suppliers of talent, having produced five Olympians, and now its 18th and 19th National representatives in Colon and Fellhauer. The pair are the first Titans to make the National roster since 2006 when both Wes Roemer and Kurt Suzuki donned the Red, White and Blue. Opening Day In the Majors On opening day of the 2008 Major League Baseball season, 22 former Big West players were listed on the MLB 25-man rosters. Long Beach State led the way with eight players in the big league. Cal State Fullerton had seven representatives, while four UCSB Gauchos made the lineups.
