Out of 8,000 regional teams from all around the world, UCF was among the 122 teams that competed in the finals. The three UCF students who were selected were Travis Meade, a Daniel Wasserman, Travis Meade and Antony Stabile. second-year Ph.D. UCF Today computer science student; Daniel Wasserman, a senior undergraduate in computer science; and Antony Stabile, a Ph.D. computer science student. Completing five hours of difficult problems, the Knights were successfully able to beat out teams from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Southern California. Each team member begins with 12 problems that involve math, logic, graphs, charts, geometry and other categories. With only three members, five hours and one computer, teamwork quickly becomes a very essential key to problem solving and strategy. Each member of the team has approximately the same role: to solve as many problems as possible each of us has some specializations in the types of problems we like to solve, Stabile said. Each year brings forth new questions for each team competing. This year, the questions included real-world scenarios, such as the efficient delivery of baggage onto and off airplanes on different routes, balancing cranes used at a construction site, finding the ideal location to place surveillance equipment with several constraints and reconfiguring a sensor network. 2 Meade said. They arranged transportation, handled getting visas for us and, most importantly, they helped us with finding new things to learn. The nine coaches main job is just to prepare the teams and make sure each member uses his or her different strengths and skills to solve the problems. I plan to coach next year. I can help from the sidelines and get our teams ready for the next regional, Meade said. Coach Arup Guha accompanied the team to Russia for the Finals and has been a coach since Guha explained the three essential elements of coaching: competing in online contests, establishing basic knowledge and forming teamwork. It is important for the team members to know their strengths and weaknesses, Guha said. Since there is only one computer, the members have to learn to be efficient. To get students ready for the extensive problem solving in the competitions, they practice for about seven to eight hours each Saturday. Students practice on a few online contests, where they compete with other students around the world with mock problems. If they don t get any of the problems online, they then go on to read tutorials so they can fully understand the new material. After receiving his bachelor s and master s degrees in electrical engineering, Stabile was pursuing a Ph.D. in computer science until he accepted a job offer from Google. Lately, my primary hobbies have been helping my lovely fiancée plan our wedding and planning our move out to California, where I ll begin working at Google, Stabile said. Since 2004, the teams have advanced to the World Finals every year except for The participation is lower than what the coaches want. We really want as many programmers to come as possible, Meade said. We are sure there are many skilled computer science students that are not even showing up. With fall tryouts coming up, coaches will meet in about two weeks to select the different questions for the year, as well as to discuss new strategies and how the contest will look.
