2 Fall Semester Bullying Prevention Training Date/Time: August 14, :00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., Marin Room Audience: School Administrators Register Online: New California laws require districts have a policy specifically addressing student bullying. In addition, new regulations require school districts to certify that their Children s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) internet safety policy includes provisions for educating students on appropriate online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on social networking websites and in chat rooms, and cyber-bullying awareness and response. Overexposed! Sexting and Digital Citizenship for Educators Date/Time: September 24, :30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Audience: School Administrators, Counselors, School Psychologists and Teachers at the middle and high school level This workshop presented by Common Sense Media will provide school staff current information on the issues of sexting and digital citizenship. Participants will learn how to address these issues in the school setting. Overexposed! Sexting and Digital Citizenship for Parents Date/Time: September 24, :30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., Community Room Audience: Parents and Guardians This workshop by Common Sense Media is designed provide parents with current information on the issues of sexting and digital citizenship. Participants will learn how to address these issues with their children.

3 Project Towards No Drug Abuse Date/Time: September 28, 2012 Location: Alameda County Office of Education Audience: Educators, Counselors and School Personnel This workshop will provide a refresher for school personnel implementing the Project Towards No Drug Abuse (Project TND) evidence-based curriculum. Project TND addresses students cognitive misperceptions around drug use. The lessons aim to provide students with healthier coping, communication and selfcontrol skills so that they do not resort to substance use and abuse. This training will insure that your school is prepared to implement this required curriculum. The Project TND curriculum is science-based and meets the Categorical Program monitoring (CPM) and Goal IV requirements in school districts Local Education Plan (LEAP) under student instruction for Tobacco Prevention programs. Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Date/Time: October 15, :00 a.m. - Noon Date/Time: October 15, :00 p.m. 3:00 p.m., Foundation Room Audience: School Administrators Carl Corbin of School and College Legal Services, Attorneys at Law, will provide the mandatory training for school administrators addressing issues of sexual harassment and safe work environments. Annual School Attendance Review Board Training Date/Time: October 15, :00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m., Board Room Audience: School Attendance Review Board Chairs, School Administrators, Marin County Probation and Local Law Enforcement Representatives. Carl Corbin of School and College Legal Services, Attorneys at Law, will provide training and an annual update on the role and function of School Attendance Review Boards. Participants will also learn about

4 the process for making referrals to the Marin County Office of Education Alternative Education programs. The Connected Child: Safety, Trust and Respect in the Digital Age Date/Time: October 17, :00 8:30 p.m., Community Room Audience: Parents and Community Members This presentation by Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Jason Brand, will help parents understand the powerful draw of new media and technology, ways to help children build a sense of good online manners and ethics, and what to do when inappropriate online activity comes their way. The Great California ShakeOut Date/Time: October 18, :18 a.m. Location: All California Schools K-12 Audience: Students and School Personnel At 10:18 a.m. on October 18, 2012, millions of Californians will Drop, Cover and Hold On in The Great California ShakeOut, the largest earthquake drill ever! All K-12 schools and districts are encouraged to participate in the drill (or plan a more extensive exercise). More materials and resources can be found at ShakeOut.org/california/schools. Red Ribbon Week Date/Time: October 23-31, 2012 Audience: Students, Parents, Guardians and Educators Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. This year Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated October 23-31, 2012.

5 Peer Summit XVII Date/Time: November 9, :30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Location: College of Marin, Kentfield Campus Audience: Seventh and Eighth Grade Students Register Online: This is an inspirational peer-to-peer leadership summit designed by youth and adults working together to create fun, interactive and educational workshops on a wide variety of topics including nutrition, relationships, drugs, alcohol and tobacco, and teen legal rights. All workshops are led by youth and community agencies. Red Flags! Threats, Bullying and Pranks Triple P for School Secretaries, Administrative Assistants and Office Staff Date/Time: November 27, :00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., Board Room Audience: Elementary and Middle School Secretaries, Administrative Assistants and Office Staff Sheriff s School Resource Officer and MCOE School Psychologist will provide tips and strategies for handling issues such as threats, disobedience, aggressive behavior and bullying. This training is part of a community wide effort to address bullying and mental health prevention. A series of three workshops is provided for school secretaries/administrative assistants with support for substitute coverage available. Red Flags! Bullying in the Digital Age: Best Practices for Addressing Bullying Behavior Date/Time: November 29, :30- a.m. 3:00 p.m.. Audience: Educators, MFTs and LCSWs Nationally-renowned presenters, Dr. Robin Kowalski and Dr. Patricia Agatston, will cover topics such as bullying among children and youth, adolescents and the Internet, best practices in prevention of cyberbullying and legal issues. Case examples will be shared. $35 fee covers registration and lunch. CEUs are available. Red Flags! Threats, Bullying, Disobedience Triple P for Paraeducators Date/Time: November 29, :00 p.m. 3:30 p.m.. Board Room Audience: Paraeducators, Campus Supervisors and Custodians Sheriff s School Resource Officer and MCOE School Psychologist will provide guidance for responding to threatening and bullying student behavior and tips on dealing with disobedience. This training is part of a community wide effort to address bullying and mental health prevention with support for substitute coverage available. Facebook Boot Camp for Parents Date/Time: December 5, 2012, and January 9, :00 p.m. 8:30 p.m.. Technology Lab Audience: Parents This hands-on session will educate parents on creation of Facebook accounts, understanding privacy settings and learning how to address your teen s digital footprint. Space is limited. Workshop will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

7 Spring Semester Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Date/Time: January 14, :00 a.m. - Noon Date/Time: January 14, :00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. Audience: School Administrators Carl Corbin of School and College Legal Services, Attorneys at Law, will provide the mandatory training for school administrators addressing issues of sexual harassment and safe work environments. Working with the Anxious, Withdrawn, Shy Student - Triple P for Paraeducators Date/Time: February 12, :00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Audience: Elementary and middle school classified staff including paraeducators, campus supervisors, custodial staff, etc. Triple P Positive Parenting Program is being expanded to address the needs of school staff. This proven, evidence-based program is being piloted in Marin County to provide school staff with tips and strategies for handling a variety of issues such as bullying, aggressive behavior and self-esteem. This training is part of a community wide effort to address bullying and mental health prevention. A series of three workshops is provided for paraeducators with support for substitute coverage available. Working with the Anxious, Withdrawn, Shy Student - Triple P for Teachers Date/Time: February 13, :30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Audience: Elementary and Middle School Teachers Triple P Positive Parenting Program is being expanded to address the needs of school staff. This proven, evidence-based program is

8 being piloted in Marin County to provide school staff with tips and strategies for handling a variety of issues such as bullying, social anxiety/withdrawal, and truancy. This training is part of a community wide effort to address bullying and mental health prevention. A series of three workshops is provided for teachers with support for substitute teacher coverage available. New Laws to Support Student Engagement Date/Time: February 28, :30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Board Room Audience: School Administrators, Counselors, and Teachers at the middle and high school level The Marin County Office of Education and the North Coast Section of the American Civil Liberties Union are hosting a presentation on new laws and requirements intended to support student engagement in school. ACLU Racial Justice Fellow Attorney Chris Bridges will be joined by students and staff from local high schools for a discussion of the impact of AB1729, AB 2537, AB1909 and SB1088. School Active Shooter Awareness Seminar Date/Time: March 20, :00 a.m. - noon Audience: Countywide: School Personnel, Fire Departments, Police Departments, EOS The seminar is designed to bring together members of local schools, law enforcement, fire and emergency medical and mental health services to have an open discussion to prepare organizations for a School Active Shooter incident. Bullying Prevention - Triple P for School Secretaries, Administrative Assistants and Office Staff Date/Time: March 20, :00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

9 Audience: Elementary and Middle School Secretaries, Administrative Assistants and Office Staff Triple P Positive Parenting Program is being expanded to address the needs of school staff. This proven, evidence-based program is being piloted in Marin County to provide school staff with tips and strategies for handling a variety of issues such as bullying, tantrums and shyness. This training is part of a community wide effort to address bullying and mental health prevention. A series of three workshops is provided for school secretaries/administrative assistants with support for substitute coverage available. Suicide Prevention: QPR A Skills Training for Educators Date/Time: March 26, :30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., Tech Center Audience: School Administrators, Counselors, and Teachers QPR stands for Question, Persuade and Refer 3 simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. This workshop will provide school staff current information on how to recognize the warning signs of suicide and offer specific guidance on how to address this important issue. Bullying Prevention - Triple P for Teachers and Paraeducators Date/Time: March 28, :00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Audience: Elementary and middle school classified staff including paraeducators, campus supervisors, custodial staff, etc. Triple P Positive Parenting Program is being expanded to address the needs of school staff. This proven, evidence-based program is being piloted in Marin County to provide school staff with tips and strategies for handling a variety of issues such as bullying, aggressive behavior and self-esteem. 10 Teen Suicide and Depression A Community Forum Date/Time: April 2, :30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., Community Room Audience: Parents and Guardians This workshop is designed for parents and guardians and will provide resources, tools and strategies to assist in the identification of depression in teens and suicide prevention. This is an opportunity to listen, learn, and share. Campus Supervisor Safety Training Date/Time: April 22, :00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., Community Room Audience: Campus Supervisors and Yard Duty Staff In this training, campus supervisory, yard duty staff and anyone responsible for maintaining school safety will have the opportunity to discuss issues ranging from bomb threats to natural disasters, student conflicts and intruders on campus. Funds will be available for release time and substitute coverage. Safe Schools Transition to College Date/Time: May 9, :30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., Community Room Audience: Parents, Students, Community Members, and School Personnel This is a public forum for parents and teens to learn about issues directly relating to teens and their families as the student transitions from high school home life to the freedom of young adulthood away at college. Topics will include Alcohol and Drugs, Sex and the Law, Teens and Cyber-bullying, and Civil and Criminal Consequences. Translation services will be provided if needed. Teen Dating Violence: Best Practices for School Counselors Date/Time: May 9, 2013 and May 14, 2013 Location: Marin Room and Tech Center at Marin County Office of

11 Education Audience: School Counselors and Educators Register Online: This interactive and multifaceted training will increase the capacity of school counselors in Marin County to identify and respond to teen dating violence (TDV). This training will feature experienced and knowledgeable speakers from the Center of Domestic Peace (C4DP). Learn how to recognize and screen for teen dating violence. Learn how to assess for risk and connect a teen to help in ten minutes or less. Identify three strategies to help increase awareness and prevention about TDV. Real DUI Trial in the Schools Date/Time: Various Dates Location: Various School Sites Audience: Students, Parents, Guardians and Educators Register Online: This will not be a fictional trial but rather an actual criminal proceeding. A courtroom will be set up on the stage and the judge, attorneys, witnesses and defendant will present the case to an advisory jury of students. Based on the evidence and testimony, the judge will make the finding as to whether the defendant is guilty of the charge of driving while intoxicated by applying the existing laws in California. Conducting a real DUI trial in a high school setting is an innovative strategy to help raise student awareness of the consequences of drunk driving and reduce community alcohol problems, including motor vehicle crashes. Students will witness the legal consequences of drinking and driving and learn about the defendant s arrest, detention, public trial and, if convicted, the imposed fines, penalties and other consequences to the defendant, such as impacts on auto insurance premiums, employment and personal life. Students will also have an opportunity to learn more about how the court system handles DUIs, one of the most prevalent types of cases filed in Marin County.
