1 `Employability Related Activities in the University of Exeter Business School This document provides an overview of School-based employability-related activities within the University of Exeter Business School during In addition to the School-based activities listed below, Business School students are actively encouraged to take full advantage of the employability activities that are organised centrally by the University of Exeter Careers and Employment Service. Please note: entries that have the Exeter Award Logo - - beside them denote activities that can contribute towards the Exeter Award and those with the Exeter Leaders Award Logo - - beside them denote activities that can contribute towards the Exeter Leaders Award. Employability-Related Activities and Information Available Throughout the Year: Business School Employability Newsletter produced once a term includes student written pieces to encourage other students to think about what they could actually achieve and there is also a section with autobiographical reflective pieces written by alumni. The newsletter is sent to all staff and students in the School, uploaded to the Business School Employability area on web-ct and to the Business School internet pages on the University of Exeter website. Business School Employability site on Web-Ct news, information and relevant links all Business School undergraduate and postgraduate students and Business School staff can access this site. Business School Employability pages appear on the Business School area of the University of Exeter website: Business School and University of Exeter Careers and Employment Service Employability events advertised on School notice boards and on the plasma screens in Streatham Court. Home and international students are encouraged to participate in the International Buddy Scheme to help international students settle in and improve their English this scheme is coordinated in the School by Juliette Stephenson (Senior Teaching Fellow) and Elizabeth Jones (Teaching Fellow). Be the Change 18 month student mentoring project for 1 st year Business School students launched 16 th March This project is organised by Jackie Bagnall (Teaching Fellow), who secured 6,000 from the DARO Annual Fund. The project is modelled on the international Be the Change movement, and seeks to develop a peer mentoring scheme in the Business School. The project aims to develop students leadership skills which build on collaboration, communication, engagement and citizenship. This development will help to ensure that participants have the skills needed to develop capacity in social systems. Whether our young

2 people go on to make a positive difference to their community, their organisation or their country, the skills and confidence that this programme will develop are transferable and will prove valuable. Work experience is embedded in the new with Industrial Experience degree pathways, BEMM376 Tourism Work-Based Learning postgraduate module and the Independent Work Experience undergraduate module (currently offered by the Education Enhancement Unit). In addition, final year undergraduate students draw on their summer placement experiences in order work on a project for the optional Business Project module (BEM3005) Additional Employability-Related Activities & Information Provided Each Term: Autumn School Employability Officer and School Work Placement Coordinator attended the ASET (the Work-Based & Placement Learning Association) Annual Conference, Lancaster, September 8 th -10 th. - University of Exeter Business School launched the With Industrial Experience degree programme (students will spend the 3 rd year of this new 4 year degree on a work placement). 82 students registered and an additional 10 students had completed forms to change their course by December 2009 and an additional 15 students had expressed an interest in changing their course but had not yet completed a change of course form at January Employability slots included in the 1 st year undergraduate induction week - Employability slots included in the Masters students induction week - Team Development event attended by first year students during induction organised centrally by EEU and co-ordinated in the School by Juliette Stephenson (Senior Teaching Fellow). - Short 10 minute employability awareness raising sessions in lectures on all 2 nd year core & 3 rd year large modules and large Masters modules at the beginning of term - Weekly What s On? s sent out to all Business School students to alert them to upcoming employability events in the School and University more generally and competitions - School employability officer and School Work Placement Coordinator offered regular drop in hours on four days a week in addition to dealing with enquiries from and booked appointments with students outside official drop in hours - School Employability Officer delivered one of the timetabled sessions Introduction to Employability - on BSD1000 Personal & Professional Development Module. The one hour session was offered 8 times during the term - School Work Placement Coordinator delivered a compulsory one hour introductory session for students on the With Industrial Experience degree programme to welcome them and provide a brief overview of the programme.

3 - 5 School-Based 2.5 hour careers clinics (1-2-1 appointments) run by Mary McCarthy & David Pritchard (See Appendix I for attendance numbers) - 3 School-based 2 hour special CV check clinics (1-2-1 appointments) run by Mary McCarthy & David Pritchard (See Appendix I for attendance numbers) - 3 School-based special CV check clinics (1-2-1 appointments) run by Procter & Gamble (See Appendix I for attendance numbers) - 25 School-Based Employability group workshops/presentations/networking events (2 of which were opened up to all students in the University) presenters included employers, alumni and representatives from the University of Exeter Careers and Employment Service and University of Exeter International Office. These events included 6 lunchtime insights talks a new series of talks put together by the Business School Employability Officer, BEE Manager and Business School Alumni Officer - and a Business School Student and Alumni Employability Networking evening put together by Business School Employability Officer and Business School Alumni Officer. (See Appendix I for attendance numbers) - 2 days of School-based mock interviews with PwC and Edge Recruits respectively (See Appendix I for attendance numbers) - 1 Field Trip to Francis Clark Accountants for Business School students (See Appendix I for attendance numbers) - 4 Pop-Up and The Business School full day sessions with Accenture, PwC, Deloitte, Ernst & Young (ie employer stand in the Undergraduate Student Services Reception Entrance area in Streatham Court) - 1 team of 6 Business School Students entered the national Grass Routes Challenge at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester (team accompanied by Elizabeth Jones (Teaching Fellow)) - 18 Business School teams entered in the IBM Universities Business Challenge and competed in the first round online (4 teams are through to the semi final rounds that will take place in February and March 2010) - School Work Placement Coordinator attended University of Exeter Employer Liaison group meeting - School Employability Officer attended University of Exeter Careers and Employability representatives meeting - School Employability Officer attended University of Exeter Employability Task Force meetings - School Employability Officer attended Undergraduate Staff Student Liaison Committee Meetings (x2) - School Employability Officer attended Postgraduate Staff Student Liaison Committee Meeting

These events include 8 lunchtime talks as part of the insights series and a Women in Leadership Roles: Employability Networking Evening put together by the Business School Employability Officer, BEE Manager and Business School Alumni Officer, a Business School Student and Alumni Employability Networking evening put together by the Business School Employability Officer and Business School Alumni Officer and Backstage 10: Events & Media Management Industry Evening put together by Paul Barton, Lecturer in Events Management and the Business School Employability Officer - 3 days of School-based mock interviews planned with Accenture, PwC, Ernst & Young respectively - 1 Pop-Up and The Business School full day session planned with PwC (ie employer stand in the Undergraduate Student Services Reception Entrance area in Streatham Court) - 4 Business School teams competing in the IBM UBC semi finals in February and March. - School Employability Officer and School Work Placement Coordinator to deliver employability talk during weekly Post Offer Open days in February and March

9 Appendix II BSD2010 Career Management Skills & BSD220 Career Management Skills for with Industrial Experience Students Suggested Structure NB: successful delivery of these non-credit bearing modules will depend on availability of sufficient human resources and teaching space for the timetabled sessions Undergraduate Yr2 (not WIE) BSD2010 Career Management Skills Although not compulsory all 2 nd year undergraduate students who are NOT registered on WIE programmes will be strongly recommended to attend the sessions on this non-credit bearing module. The worst case scenario is that the sessions will be held during the last week of term ie week commencing 14 th June. However, it is hoped that we can hold the sessions before the last week of term.
