2 1. Introduction The refresher course is for delegates who have previously passed the full SMSTS course or subsequent refresher course and can provide proof of attendance. It aims to bring health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace. The course includes a wide range of topics many building on the previous five-day course programme as well as introducing new subjects. 2. Thea aims and objectives The refresher course aims to: improve awareness of recent developments in construction, legislation and health, safety, welfare and environmental issues; and identify measures that will assist the practical implementation of responsibilities established by new legislation, and new working practices. At the end of the period of training, delegates will be: aware of, and able to implement all updated health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them in their role as a manager aware of and able to implement new guidance and industry of best practice more aware of their duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment. 3. Course delivery The preferred method of delivering the refresher course is on two consecutive days. Cskills Awards recognises that training providers may have to deliver this course as two separate non-consecutive days on occasion to meet client needs; however, every effort should be made to run the course by the preferred method. It is important that continuity of training is maintained on this short intensive course. Appendix 8 page 2 of 6

Course attendance Delegates are required to attend both sessions, since without full attendance and achievement in the examination the renewal of the Construction Site Manager s Safety Certificate cannot be made. Delegates must attend the days in order and, where not on consecutive days, must complete the course within two weeks. Delegates unable to attend both days due to extenuating circumstances (e.g. certificated sickness) will need to enrol onto a new course in order to maintain continuity of learning outcomes and attend both days again. 4.1 Course eligibility Only those delegates who hold an existing SMSTS or subsequent refresher course and provided evidence to the training provider before attending the course are eligible to attend the refresher course. Failure to attend the refresher course prior to the expiry of an existing certificate will require delegates to re-enter the scheme by completing the full SMSTS course if they wish to remain in the scheme. If a delegate cannot provide a copy of their certificate, it may be possible to receive confirmation your Cskills Awards customer co-ordinator on Your customer co-ordinator will require delegate information such as registration number, date of birth or National Insurance Number in order to locate the appropriate record. If an individual cannot be located on the system and no evidence of their certificate can be found, they will have to attend the full SMSTS course. Failure to gain evidence of achievement of an original SMSTS course will result in the course being processed as attendance only and a certificate will not be issued. 4.2 Grace period Delegates who have exceeded the six-month grace period are not eligible to take the refresher course. Any delegate who is accepted onto a course outside of the grace period will NOT be processed as achieving the certificate. Appendix 8 page 3 of 6

End-of-course examination rules for the refresher course Refer to Section 3 Registering courses and marking Delegates performance The examination paper number will be notified when the course booking is accepted by the Cskills Awards. The examination paper is compulsory and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions selected by Cskills Awards. It forms a basis of assessment as to whether or not a delegate has successfully achieved the renewal of the Construction Site Manager s Certificate. The examination lasts for 30 minutes and must be completed within this time. Delegates are permitted to use the Construction Site Safety (GE700) publication for the last ten minutes of the examination period. The examination pass mark is 72%. Where a delegate has achieved 64% 68% in the examination, the delegate may re-sit the multiplechoice examination by attending another course on the final day and subsequent arrangements will be at the delegate s own expense. The training provider must make the arrangements with the delegate and ensure that the same examination paper is not used twice. The delegate must re-sit the examination within 90 days of the last day previously attended. Failure to complete the re-sit within this time parameter will require the delegate to attend the full SMSTS course. A charge may be made to the delegate; however, this fee is left entirely to the discretion of the training provider. The training provider may also have additional costs to be recovered from the delegate and these should be agreed in advance. Should the delegate fail for a second time, that person will need to attend a full SMSTS course again. Delegates who do not achieve sufficient marks to pass or re-sit the examination will have to complete the full SMSTS course to remain within the scheme. Appendix 8 page 6 of 6
