Emergency and Evacuatin. POLICY STATEMENT. The service will prvide an envirnment that prvides fr the safety and wellbeing f the children at all times ( My Time, Our Place 1.1, 3.1). All children and Educatrs will be aware f, and practised in, emergency and evacuatin prcedures. In the event f an emergency, natural disaster r threats f vilence these prcedures will be immediately implemeted. In implementing the practise sessins f emergency prcedures with children educatrs will encurage children t discuss pssible scenaris where emergency prcedures may be required and supprt children t cme up with slutins and ideas fr imprving n the prcedures r discussing ways t avert emergecny situatins ( My Time, Our Place 4.2 ). Opprtunities fr lder children t access and use the written emergency prcedures t rientate new children prir t an emergency drill will be prvided by educatrs n a regular basis prir t carrying ut the emergency drill ( My Time, Our Place 5.1 and 5.2) CONSIDERATIONS. ( Plans t effectively manage incidents and emergencies are develped in cnsultatin with relevant authrities, practised and implemented.) PROCEDURE. A risk assessment will be cnducted by Educatrs and Management annually t review and refine emergency prcedures Emergency evacuatin prcedures and flr plan will be clearly displayed in a prmient psitin near the main entrance and exit f each rm used by the service. All Educatrs, including relief staff, will be infrmed f the prcedure and their specific duties identified in their rientatin t the centre. Educatrs will make arrangements as t duties undertaken in the absence f ther staff. Children and Educatrs will practice the emergency prcedure at least twice a term, in all types f care, befre schl, after schl and at the beginning vacatin care. All Emergency Drills will be recrded with date, time and length f time it tk t leave building. Additinal cmments n recmmendatins fr imprvements can als be included in the recrd. Drills will be cnducted mre regularly when there are new children. Parents will be infrmed f the prcedure and assembly pints in the parent

handbk. N child r Educatr is t g t their bags t cllect persnal items during an emergency evacuatin. This wuld lead t cnfusin and delays. The centre will maintain a fire blanket and smke detectrs and have them checked regularly as per the manufacturers instructins and schls checks. Fire extinguishers will be installed and maintained in accrdance with Australian Standard 2444. Educatrs will be instructed in their peratin. Educatrs will nly attempt t extinguish fires if the fire is small, there is n threat t their persnal safety and they feel cnfident t perate the extinguisher and all the children have been evacuated frm the rm. Educatrs shuld be aware f bush fire danger and if relevant have apprpriate training n the necessary prcedures. SERVICES IN BUSH FIRE PRONE AREAS MUST HAVE A PLAN. The Lcal Fire Authrity shuld be cntacted fr advice and training n fire safety and this plan included in yur prcedures. Example Plan - The evacuatin plan will include: rutes f leaving the building suitable fr all ages and abilities. These shuld be clearly mapped ut. plan f where the fire extinguishers are lcated displayed in a public place. a safe assembly pint away frm access f emergency services. an alternative assembly area in case the first ne becmes unsafe. list f items t be cllected and by whm. list f current emergency numbers. staff duties in the emergency. Educatrs will be nminated t: make the annuncement t evacuate, identifying where and hw. cllect children s attendance recrds and parents cntact numbers. cllect emergency services numbers. make the phne call t 000 r ther apprpriate service, management and parents as required. cllect the first aid kit. check that the building and playgrund is empty and that all drs and windws are clsed as far as pssible, t reduce the spread f a fire. supervise the children at the assembly area, and take a rll call f children. Educatrs shuld be aware f any visitrs.

N ne shuld re-enter the building until the fficer in charge has said it is safe t d s. HARASSMENT AND THREATS OF VIOLENCE. If a persn/s knwn r unknwn t the service harasses r makes threats t children r Educatrs at the centre, r n an excursin, Educatrs will: calmly and plitely ask them t leave the centre r the vicinity f the children. be firm and clear and remember yur primary duty is t the children in yur care. if they refuse t leave, explain that it may be necessary t call the plice t remve them. if they still d nt leave, call the plice. if the C-rdinatr is unable t make the call anther staff member shuld be directed t d s. Educatrs shuld liase with team members in advance t determine a cde phrase that will alert anther team member t a threat situatin arising and prmpt them t cntact plice. where pssible Educatrs must endeavur t calmly mve the children away frm the persn and this may be achieved quickly with the use f anther cde phrase that will encurage wrd f muth transmissin between children t mve quickly frm the area t anther safer envirnment withut causing them alarm ( as an example, the reminder t a child that ice cream is being served tday at xxx lcatin fr all children). n Educatr shuld attempt t physically remve the unwelcme persn, but try t remain calm and keep the persn calm as far as pssible and wait fr the plice. Educatrs shuld be aware f any unfamiliar persn n the premises and find ut what they want as quickly as pssible and try t cntain them utside the centre. Emergency Evacuatin Plan 1. Blw Whistle (lcated next t OOSH entry dr r first available) 3 times. Alert staff and remve children in a quite and rderly manner, by the nearest safe exit. If safe, Crdinatr will quickly search all areas fr staff and children. 2. Assemble at Safe Area (Infants Play Grund) and accunt fr all children and staff 2IC will call the rll and check all staff are present. Crdinatr will call 000, giving the centre name and address and the nearest crss street. All staff will calm and reassure children. 3. Crdinatr will reprt t the fire fficer in charge and reprt any missing children r staff, the lcatin f the fire and r any ther relevant infrmatin. 4. The building shall nt be re-entered until the fire fficer advisers that it is safe t d s. N.B An emergency evacuatin drill will be practiced with the children at the beginning f each term and vacatin care. Organise unplanned infrmal drills frm time t time. The emergency evacuatin plan, flr plan and Lcatin Plan are displayed at all exits and a cpy kept with the rll. Staff Respnsibilities / Specific Duties All staff are respnsible fr the safety and well being f all children at all times. The Crdinatr will ensure that: Regular equipment safety checks and Emergency Evacuatin are carried ut and recrded in the apprpriate register. All staff are familiar with the emergency prcedures and specific duties. All casual staff r vlunteers are rientated t the centre and their rle prir t the children arriving. Gates and lcks are in wrking rder, keys are readily accessible Rll bk, cntact numbers and mbile phne are readily accessible. All staff will ensure that: Passageways, Fire exits and stairs are kept clear. Equipment, rubbish r vehicles d nt blck external exits dr, gates and rutes. Acts f serius vilence frm a child r family using the service can result in immediate suspensin frm the centre until further ntice in cnsultatin with management. Emergency evacuatins may result due t situatins f; fire, bmb threats, accidents t children r adults (see accidents plicy), vilence, natural and unnatural disasters.
