East Los Angeles College Department of Social Sciences African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology Department Office: E5-118, (323) 265-8829 Helen Miller Bailey Memorial Scholarship Award 2012 Dr. Helen Miller Bailey served as chair of the Social Science Department from 1946 to 1973. She was an expert in Latin American History and often traveled to Mexico. She contributed immensely to the sociology and political science disciplines. She published many books and her photograph and art collections were research sources in several fields. The college library was named after her in recognition of life work. Dr. Bailey was tireless in promoting the interests of Hispanic students and the community at large. Her efforts to get the state to improve the quality of education for Chicano students date back to the early 1950s. She was a member of numerous social service organizations in the community and she raised thousands of dollars in scholarships, enabling needy students to pursue a college education. Through her instruction and mentoring she inspired a generation of leaders coming out of the East Los Angeles area, including former US Ambassador Julian Nava. This scholarship was created to further her guidance of Hispanic students, but students of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The selection criteria are based on the 'model' set by Dr. Bailey. Selection criteria: * a current ELAC student who will continue at ELAC or transferring to a 4-year * a major in History, Political Science, Sociology, Economics or a related field is required * completion of at least one semester at East Los Angeles College with a B average or better * a complete application, including an essay, a recent transcript, and two letters of recommendation * career plans that follow the model set by Dr. Bailey; preference will be given to candidates who plan to return to the community and to help others In partnership with the ELAC Foundation, the Social Sciences Department sponsors the Helen Miller Bailey Scholarship. The selection of scholarship recipients and the distribution of funds will be performed by a committee selected by the Social Sciences Department. Scholarships range from $100 to 1,000. To apply, visit the following website, fill out the form online, and print. http://www.elac.edu/admission/finaid/doc/scholarships/ HelenMillerBaileyScholarship2012.pdf Please provide the completed application and all supporting items to the Social Science Department office F7-307 no later than Friday, March 16, 2010, 4pm. 3

Dear ELAC Faculty Members: Project MATCH The Los Angeles Community College District s Project MATCH (Mentors Act To Change History) faculty internship program is looking for full time and part-time faculty to mentor the 2012 interns. This program began in 1991 in an effort to recruit classroom faculty, librarian, and counseling interns and provide them with an opportunity to learn and practice skills appropriate for working with community college students. Project MATCH interns are fully qualified in their respective disciplines but have no prior college teaching experience. As a mentor, you will receive an $800 stipend for guiding your intern as he or she explores a community college career. Mentors are needed for day and evening schedules (Monday Friday). During the fall semester, each intern will participate in one of his or her mentor s courses. Project MATCH has proven to be a very rewarding experience for both mentors and interns. Over the past 20 years, many Project MATCH interns have become successful instructors, counselors, and librarians within the LACCD. If you are interested in mentoring an intern, please contact the Project MATCH Coordinator, Joanna Zimring Towne zimringj@piercecollege.edu for the application forms. The ELAC contact is Gabriella Lopez, Librarian 323-357-6214 lopezgm@elac.edu. The deadline for submission is Friday, April 20th. Project MATCH The Los Angeles Community College District s Project MATCH (Mentors Act To Change History) faculty internship program is looking for faculty members and administrators to volunteer on the following dates. Flex credit, breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided during these events. Interview Days April 20 & 21, 2012 (Friday & Saturday) District Office (Downtown Los Angeles) 8am 4pm Project MATCH interviews approximately 150 people over the two day period for a final selection of 50 interns. We need the assistance of faculty and administrators from all disciplines to assist in the interview process. You will interview candidates in teams of 2 or 3 people and provide a detailed evaluation of each candidate. Interview panel members must stay for the whole day. Please select Friday or Saturday or even both days. Volunteers please contact Joanna Zimring Towne, Project MATCH Coordinator via District e-mail or telephone 818-719-6440 or 818-710-4367 Direct.
