Tip a Cop: fund raiser for Special Olympics There will be a fund raiser October 14th from 6 p.m. until closing at Boondock s Restaurant on Ramrod Key for Special Olympics. Our very own officers will be acting as celebrity waiters and waitresses; you will be provided with a special envelope in which you place your tip. The envelope is sent directly to Special Olympics Florida. It will be used to send athletes to the State Summer Games in Lake Buena Vista, next year. Anne Leonard s Retirement Party There will be a retirement party for Communications Division Director Anne Leonard, who is leaving the Sheriff s Office after 32 years of telling you all where to go! The party will be at Boondock s Restaurant on Friday, November 11th from 6:30-9:30 p.m. The cost will be $24.00 per person for the buffet, plus a cash bar. Pumpkin Carving Contest D-Hooker, a family restaurant and sports bar at the 102.3 mile marker bayside in Key Largo, is having a family oriented Pumpkin Carving contest on October 26th from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Members of the Sheriff s Office and the Fire Department will be on hand to talk to people about safety issues and to show off their public safety equipment. The Sheriff s Office will have a Crime Scene Investigation unit there, along with someone from the Traffic Enforcement Division and from the Victim s Advocate unit as well. Lower Keys gym closed for cleaning The gymnasium at the Headquarters complex will be closed for major cleaning and painting from Tuesday, October 18th at 9 a.m. until Wednesday, October 19th at 5 p.m. Plan accordingly. New Statute: Blue Alert From Lt. Nancy Alvarez A blue alert shall be issued (by FDLE, in cooperation with DHSMV and DOT) when requested by an authorized person employed at a law enforcement agency when all of the following conditions are met: 1.) A law enforcement officer has been killed, has suffered serious bodily injury, has been assaulted with a deadly weapon or is missing while in the line of duty under circumstances evidencing concern for the officer s safety and 2.) The suspect has fled the scene of the offense 3.) The investigating law enforcement agency determines that the suspect poses an imminent threat to the public or to other LEOs 4.) A detailed description of the suspect s vehicle, or other means of escape, or the license plate of the suspect s vehicle is available for broadcasting 5.) Dissemination of available information to the public may help avert further harm or assist in the apprehension of the suspect, and 6.) If the LEO is missing, there is sufficient information available relating to the officer s last known location and physical description, and the description of the vehicle involved, including the license plate number or other identifying information, to be broadcast to the public and other law enforcement agencies, which could assist in locating the missing LEO. Weekly Rap Up - Page 2 Only those of you who have been here a while will remember this guy...here are a few hints: Notice the airport sign in the photo (that is hint #1). He worked here from 1977 until retiring in 1994. In addition to being a law enforcement officer, he was a pilot for the agency as well. This photo was taken around 1979. The Sheriff and other members of the Sheriff s Office got off a plane in Tallahassee the other day and guess who they found?
