October 7, 2016 Editor s Note: The Sheriff s Office Weekly Rap-Up comes out on Friday afternoon If you have a submission, please send it to me and I will be happy to include it. Send it to beckyherrin@keysso.net, or in the courier to Deputy Becky Herrin, Media Relations Division, Headquarters building on Stock Island. This publication can be viewed on line at www.keysso.net/employees/weekly_rap_up/weekly_rap_up.htm Bike Rides for veterans and their families This past weekend, the Sheriff s Office in several different areas of the Keys helped out with long distance bike rides. Deputy Nelson Sanchez helped out with the Ride 2 Recovery. A veteran named Jerry Lachance, riding from Canada to the Florida Keys and raising money for wounded veterans. Other deputies in the Keys - including some of our Traffic Enforcement Unit, helped out, on the last part of a 2500 mile long bike ride from Maine to Key West. The rider, retired Colonel Gary West, was riding to raise money and awareness for the Folds of Honor Foundation, a nonprofit group that provides scholarships to the families of killed or disabled military members. Both men are to be commended for their tremendous efforts to help our military veterans and their families.

Deputies on Sgt. Sydney Whitehouse s squad in the Upper Keys trained in felony traffic stops this week. In the photos are Deputies Jean Gonzalez, Dave Campbell and George Zakariadze. On Sunday, while conducting a watch order at Higgs Beach, Deputies Shawn Steele and Aaron Roddy located a trash can that had been intentionally knocked over. We found the trash had been scattered about the beach and organized to say HOCC. A couple of good Samaritans - Annie Nelson and Manny Aguirre - were walking down the beach and stopped to help the deputies clean up the trash. Lower Keys Deputies Josh Gordon and Jon Riggs hard at work on Big Pine Key yesterday, making sure everyone is driving safely!!!! Weekly Rap Up - Page 2 Lower Keys Sgt. Upper Keys Sheriff s Office was well represented at KMart Safety Days in Key Largo this past weekend. The Bomb Squad and SWAT team talked with kids at Gerald Adams Elementary School on Stock Island last Friday about law enforcement. And the winner is...sheriff Rick Ramsay did the honors picking a raffle winner for the Yeti cooler. The winner was Jill Brownlow. The raffle raised money for Relay for Life. This manatee had a rope tangled around its flipper. Someone called to report it. Marine Deputy Nelson Sanchez and Sgt. Mark Coleman responded. Here is Sgt. Coleman in the water, cutting the manatee free from the entanglement while Deputy Sanchez helps from the boat. Florida Keys Healthy Start Coalition thanks SRO Deputy Dave Stark for his assistance with a recent child safety event in Key Largo. Weekly Rap Up - Page 4
