What is sustainability?
Why should SRC s get involved in promoting sustainability? As school leaders, you can help move your school towards committing to a more sustainable future by influencing the way people think and act in your school! Sustainability leadership at school involves raising awareness about the impact of your school s operations on the environment. Examples include using water and energy wisely and preventing stormwater pollution of local waterways.! Young people have the power to contribute to the community by volunteering and encouraging others in their school to participate in projects like Clean-up Australia day, Schools Earth Hour, DEC student portal now has link to register your volunteering time There are different levels of attainment for how many hours you volunteer You should be registering your time at this meeting.! Contributing to the debate about sustainability issues through social media!
Ecological footprint An ecological footprint is the amount of land a person city or country requires to provide all its raw materials and to remove all its waste.! According to the WWF Living Planet Report, humans are using 50% more resources than the earth can provide. Australia is the worlds 7th largest polluter and if everyone on the planet had an Australian standard of living, we would need 3.76 planets to support the world s population.! Why get involved in promoting sustainability? Promoting sustainability is a way of protecting the planet for the future! Sustainability is an integral part of workplace management and decisionmaking, and a growth industry providing many future jobs. 1 in 11 people in this room will have a green job in the future. There will be 26 mill green jobs created across the globe by 2025.! The University of NSW says that 3 in 4 jobs have an interface with sustainability!
