Johnson. Johnson was sworn in to office in November 1963 following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In 1963, President Johnson took his oath of office and succeeded in the passage of Kennedy s legislative programs. In 1964, President Johnson and Hubert Humphrey were elected by the greatest popular vote in modern times, and his term in office is best known for his Great Society Programs, Aid to Education, Urban Renewal, Medicare, prevention of crime and delinquency, removal of obstacles to the right to vote and the Vietnam War, written in the Edgewood: The Story, The People, 1986. President Johnson was instrumental in his efforts to build programs to benefit those in need. He believed that education was the answer to all problems. He was quoted in the Edgewood: The Story, joined efforts with Edgewood ISD to honor the late president. Randy Beamer, co-anchor at News4 San Antonio, served as master of ceremonies. Invited guests included Bishop Rick Hawkins from Place for Life, who provided the invocation; MHS Color Guard presented Colors; and LBJ Elementary Choir sang the National Anthem. Remarks from special guests included former Congressman Charlie Gonzalez; State Representative Justin Rodriguez; Mercedes Spellmon The People, (1986): At the desk where I sit, I have learned one great truth. The answer for all our national problems of the world-comes down to a single word. That word is education. He is remembered for his promotion of equality, education, and programs to benefit those in need. In mid-november, the Edgewood District along with members of the community, students, former students and staff, honored the late president in recognizing the 50-year anniversary of the naming of the school. Cervantes Superintendent We are at the end of 2014; this year certainly passed quickly. The year 2015 will soon be here, filled with excitement and anticipation. This time of year is special. Our students and employees are looking forward to the winter break to re-energize our minds and bodies, and to make plans for the new year. As we see bright and colorful lights on so many homes, let us be reminded of new beginnings and a hope that all of us can make a big difference in our community and in the world. This is also a time of giving. The best thing Edgewood ISD can give our students and each other is our complete effort in whatever we do. We must give our students high expectations and communicate those expectations clearly. It takes just one person in our lives someone who never gives up on us to make a difference. Believe in someone, believe in yourself, and believe in Edgewood ISD. I urge you to keep giving our students all the care, attention, and motivation that will prepare and educate them to maximize their potential in becoming productive members of society. Children are not the only ones making wish lists this time of year. As Superintendent, my wish is that we will all work together to deliver on everlasting hope, fulfill promises, show and express generosity and kindness, and appreciate what we have. Dr. Eddie Rodriguez, in Place 1, was a first-time candidate. Dr. Rodriguez was elected and will serve the Edgewood School Board and the community until 2018. Rodriguez was the only new board member to be sworn in. Incumbents Mary Lou Mendoza, in Place 3, was re-elected to continue to serve in her capacity. John Morales in Place 2 was appointed last year and was elected by the community to serve in his new term. Dr. Rodriguez in Place 1 and John Morales took the oath of office administered by State Rep. Jose Menendez, District 124, on November 14 following the canvassing of election results. Mary Lou Mendoza, Place 3, was sworn in on Tuesday, November 18 during the regular school board meeting. She took the oath of office from Don Walheim, Edgewood School Board attorney. Mendoza continues to serve through November 2018. Trustees select new officers Following the Canvassing of the Election, board members opted to select the new school board officers pursuant to the Election Code and Board Policy. A special certificate was presented to Tino Duran, publisher of La Prensa de San Antonio, who worked on Johnson s education cabinet in the early years of office. In closing, a red, white, and blue flowered wreath was presented to the school by former students and invited guests. A benediction was recited by Rev. Bryan L. Thomas, Community Bible Church, and Erica Gonzaba, a local singer, sang Hero by Mariah Carey. Presenting the wreath are Eugene Williams, Justin Rodriguez, State Rep., Charlie Gonzalez, former Congressman, Judge Irene Rios and Wendy Jennings. Page 4/Winter 2014 UTSA Football Star fits right in What does a 280 pound center for the UTSA Roadrunner football team have in common with 36 elementary students at Henry B. Gonzalez Elementary? They all enjoy wearing a bow tie and learning proper etiquette. Students at Henry B. Gonzalez have formed a Bow Tie Club. The Bow Tie Club gives students the opportunity to develop proper etiquette, including manners, courtesy, respect, and confidence. Nate Leonard, a center for the UTSA Roadrunners, emphasized the fact that learning proper etiquette skills will make them stand out above others. He added, With a firm handshake, eye to eye contact, and holding your head up when acknowledging others will make you look prepared and confident. Students where excited to have Leonard attend their luncheon. Leonard greeted each student with a firm handshake and eye contact as he arrived. He answered questions about his career and plans for the future. Leonard was asked if he planned to play in the NFL someday. Leonard responded that he had already reached his goals for football. He only wanted to play college football. His goal now was to graduate college and become a teacher. Mario Goff, principal and club host, developed the concept of the club after being approached about his bow ties. Students like the idea of wearing a bow tie because it was different. I wore a bow tie to school one day and students started asking questions about it. They were interested in wearing a bow tie because they like the way it looked, said Goff. The club was created to teach students proper etiquette and manners. Goff said, Students will learn basic old school manners. Students will work on Planning for the future: College Night was huge success community service projects, as a group, and will earn points for a cardigan sweater and a bow tie. We hope to have cardigans for all the students and a bow tie by the spring, said Goff. Students will need to earn their cardigans by participating in community service with the club. Once they have earned their hours, they will keep their cardigan and bow tie, he added. Attention Student Writers! The group is open to having visitors speak to the students. College Night was packed with enthusiasm at Kennedy High School in November. A rainy day did not seem to affect the atmosphere or the attendees. Three hundred students and parents visited with 65 colleges, universities, and other entities to gather information about educational opportunities. Cedric plays for all to enjoy Cedric Frazier is a senior at Kennedy High School. He hopes to one day join the military and work as a nurse in the medical field. He enjoys being a part of the JROTC program and loves his anatomy class. He is also involved in martial arts and holds a yellow belt. Cedric also has a passion, a passion for playing the piano. He has no prior training and cannot read music, he is self-taught or plays by ear. Every morning when he arrives to school, he walks to the auditorium stage and begins to play the piano. The music flows from the piano through the hallways and up to the classrooms where everyone can hear. Cedric was surprised to learn that many listening to him play each morning, were unaware that the music playing was an actual individual. Cedric s love for the piano led him to learn to play the piano by ear. He creates his own music and sometimes learns a song from Youtube and plays that selection as well. He enjoys music and feels that playing the piano allows him to calm down and meditate. The sound of the piano eases my soul; it moves my soul and takes me to a place within myself, he said, Playing the piano helps me relax. Frazier only plays the piano at the school. He has a small keyboard, but wishes he had a more elaborate keyboard where he could play and practice his music at home. For now, he will continue to play at school and practice as often as he can. I come to school early in the morning so that I have time to play the piano before school begins, he said. If you visit Kennedy High School in the early morning hours and hear the sweet sound of a piano playing, know that it is Cedric, playing for all ears to hear. Winter 2014/Page 5
Page 6/Winter 2014 Salsa Bowl excitement The Sixth Annual Salsa Bowl Tailgate Party and Game are history. Over 1,000 attendees enjoyed the music and food at the tailgate party. The Kennedy and Memorial high school bands performed along with the dance team, and cheer squads. Vendors were on hand to give out snacks. The rain did not deter attendees. Umbrellas could be seen everywhere in the stands. Groups huddled under each to keep themselves dry from the constant drizzle as the Sixth Annual Salsa Bowl Game kicked off. The high spirited halftime performances were a battle of the bands as they played and challenged one another on the field. The Folklorico dancers and mariachi added to the ambiance of the event. The football teams competed for that Salsa Bowl trophy presented at the end of the game. The game was exciting and challenging for both teams. At the final whistle, the Kennedy Rockets won by a score of 28-21. Congratulations to the Kennedy Rockets. Shoes donated to students Brentwood students earn chair in UIL Regional Band The Middle School UIL Region Band auditions were held in November at Connolly Middle School. Students from the districts that make up Region 11 Edgewood ISD, Northside ISD, Harlandale ISD, Southside ISD, Southwest ISD, South San Antonio ISD competed on their instrument for the chance to earn a chair in the 2014-2015 Region Band. Eighth grader Candyce Lozano earned a 2nd chair position on alto saxophone, 7th grader Jennifer Adame earned a 2nd chair position on bari saxophone, and 8th grader Ranulfo Avalos earned an alternate chair position on tuba. These students had to learn two songs plus memorize several fundamental scales and go through a tough audition process against many other students from the six school districts to place at the top of their sections and earn a chair. Congratulations to all of the students who auditioned for the region band and the three musicians who earned a chair in the Region Band this year! The Compadres for Scholarships, Edgewood Veterans Association and First Mark teamed up to make wishes come true for students. The groups provided 400 pairs of shoes for students in need during a small reception at the Family Service Center. Students were measured the previous month during the Opening Ceremonies of the Family Center. Students attending the event were pleased with their gift. One student even played the guitar for entertainment.
Winter 2014/Page 9 Theatre students perform for sold-out crowd The Edgewood Academy Theatre students presented The Learned Ladies Synopsis in early November. Students performed before sold-out crowds in the Black Box at the Theatre. Theatre arts students were prepared for the evening performance. We usually sell out for these performances or come close to it, said Claudia Casso, Theatre Arts teacher. The story is about two love struck characters that must overcome obstacles before they can marry. The cast members consisted of: Celeste Lozano, Chris Cerda, April Gutierrez, Jessalyn Bautista, Jennifer Carreon, Ernesto Alonzo, Jaryd Serna, Jose Ortiz, Michelle Martinez, Adelicia Cardenas, John Sancho, Emmanuel Ojeda, Juan Gomez, Amanda Valdez, Jennifer Lopez, Samantha Euresti, Aeryka Frausto, Yesenia Huffman-Saenz,Chasity Baerga, Gabriella Collins, and Marco Cruz. Crew members were Julio Munoz, Savanna Moss, Alex Lara, Syrus Herrera, Julian Trevino, and Jeffrey Placeres. The play was directed by Claudia Casso. Other staff included Robert Ramos, set designer, and Don Nunez, costume designer. First Thanksgiving shared by students How do 92 second graders learn about the first Thanksgiving? Johnson ES students sat together for their own version of the first Thanksgiving as it was shared by the settlers. Second grade students at Johnson ES took part in a culminating project. The project taught them about the first Thanksgiving. In the process, they learned vocabulary, compare and contrast (from the first Thanksgiving celebration to the way it is celebrated today) and wrote a report on what they learned. Students received a Thanksgiving Feast as their reward for the project. They enjoyed the different foods and fruits in their holiday brunch. STEM students celebrate STEM WEEK Edgewood ISD STEM Academy students had a busy week during STEM Week in November. The City of San Antonio proclaimed STEM Week in November. Students took part in a five-day filled schedule with activities. Dress for Success was the first of the five day events. Students also attended a Latina Day and Latino Day event at the Freeman Coliseum where they participated in hands-on and demonstration projects, listened to speakers about STEM careers. At the latter part of the week, students wrote words of appreciation to staff and enjoyed the showing of The Twilight Zone during lunch. The Geek Bus, a mobile that travels to schools to inspire and spark students interest in science and math, visited the campus.
Page 10/Winter 2014 Garcia LOTC receives flags The Edgewood Veterans Association and VFW Post #8936 donated a U.S. flag and a Texas flag to the Gus Garcia MS LOTC (Leadership Officers Training Corps) to keep in the classroom. Students were happy to receive the flags. Members of both organizations took turns speaking to the students about the expectations of a cadet. In October, LOTC received $1,000 to purchase drill rifles for the drill team. The Veterans Association plans to offer additional assistance in the future. The School Board approved the purchase of a new digital radio communication system for the Edgewood ISD Police Department. The new system, from Harris Communications, is the system currently used by the San Antonio Police Department and the Bexar County Sheriff s Office. There are several other police agencies within Bexar County that use this system, including school district departments. The system uses a digital antenna and will provide accurate reliable communication throughout Bexar County. Edgewood ISD s Transportation Department will also be placed on New radio system for EISD Police Department this new system. EISD will be the first school district in Bexar County to have transportation on this system. When traveling outside of Bexar County, Transportation will be able to communicate with each other within a 1-mile radius of its group, and with law enforcement agencies in the area in case of emergencies. Aside from the radio given to police officers, one radio will be purchased for each campus. This will give all campuses direct communications access to emergency or transportation services in a crisis. The new system will replace a UHF based radio communication system, which is limited to within EISD boundaries. Winter Break December 22-26, 2014 December 29, 2014 - January 2, 2015 Classes resume Monday, January 5, 2015. Kennedy Cheer Squad qualifies for Nationals The John F. Kennedy Varsity Cheer Squad has qualifed, through video, for the 2015 Senior and Junior High School National Championship Competition sponsored by the NCA (National Cheerleading Association). The qualifying video consisted of a cheer, jumps, stunts, and tumbling. Students have been working hard and their dedication has paid off, said Debra Garcia, cheer sponsor. The team has a goal to bring home the National Championship. The cheer squad will compete in Dallas, Texas on January 24th and 25th against cheer squads from all over the United States. Students are excited and ready to compete, said Garcia. The cheer sponsors are Debra Garcia and Leticia Tello. The team thanks those who supported the squad, especially the parents and family for their continuous support throughout the season.
Winter 2014/ Page 11 Parent Ambassadors will serve parents and community A newly created Edgewood Parent Ambassador program will involve parents and community. The induction took place at Memorial High School in November. Every campus will have two parent ambassador representatives. The ambassadors will be an additional resource for parents providing information and support at the campuses. They will also serve as a link among parents, schools, and school district. Parent Ambassadors are volunteer representatives selected based on recommendations from their school principal and parent liaison. Ambassadros will work under the direction of Melisa Bombella, Parent Coordinator. The Parent Ambassador Program will build the skills, knowledge, and confidence of parents to advocate for their children, as well as become partners with EISD in improving local educational policies and practices that benefit all students. The Parent Ambassador Program will be made up of parent leaders trained to engage in district committees, increase awareness among parents about key education policies, and help engage other parents in the education efforts of the district. The District is planning the 3rd annual DAMAS (Daughters and Mothers Achieving Success) Conference on Saturday, February 21, 2015, at the Edgewood Fine Arts Academy. This event will help strengthen families and empower the girls and women of Edgewood ISD and the surrounding communities. It is designed to help make positive choices about health, body, life and future. There will be keynote speakers and numerous breakout sessions throughout this event. Students can sign-up with the school parent liaison. Girls in grades 6-12 are invited to participate with their mother or a female role model. Attendees will interact with one another in various sessions, listen to presenters, and ask questions. Learn about positive methods to keep a healthy lifestyle and making good decisions in your lives. Speakers will share their own life experiences and how they have succeeded in life. A continental breakfast and box lunch will be provided. Cadets host holiday party for family The Memorial HS JROTC students have adopted a family for Christmas. Students chose to adopt a family of six - mother and five children. The students organized a small reception for them and invited a special guest to meet the family. Santa Claus, his elves and a reindeer brought a bag full of presents for the entire family. This event is a service learning project for the cadets.
