Internal Affairs Executive Assistant Jo Socha organized a Cudjoe Garden s Crime Watch meeting recently. Lt. Donnie Catala and Traffic Deputy John McGee were the guests who spoke to the group about gun safety and crime prevention. Sheriff s Sgt. Lakesha Grant was recognized at last week s Youth Success Luncheon for her partnership, assistance and dedication to the Department of Juvenile Justice. Duck Key Cleanup 1180 pounds of trash were removed from Duck Key this past weekend by this impressive group of dedicated people. Law Enforcement Luncheon This month s luncheon will be held at the Trumbo Palms Restaurant on the Key West Trumbo Point Annex February 24, 2016 at Noon. This meeting s topic will be presented by the U.S. Attorney s Office Senior Litigation Counsel, Assistant U.S. Attorney, Dexter Lee. He will speak about litigation of civil rights claims against law enforcement officers, and the defenses available to police officers. The presentation should be of interest to all that attend. Given the controversy that exists in the United States over the use of force by police officers, generated in large part by bystander videos which have been made public, police officers may believe that they are under siege. Mr. Lee would like to review the legal standards for the lawful use of force, including the use of deadly force, and how civil rights actions are resolved in the courts. Please RSVP no later than February 16, 2016 to Colleen Dymarcik at 305-293-2866 or colleen. dymarcik@navy.mil ALL attendees must RSVP as all names must be provided for front gate access. Plantation Key School seventh graders visited the Plantation Key courthouse this week to learn about how the court system works. They also had a chance to talk to Sheriff s Office court deputies about the job they do keeping the courthouse and court personnel safe. Weekly Rap Up - Page 4

Deputies Alexandria Davis and Darren Jensen paint out graffiti under the Bow Channel Bridge. After a number of parking complaints on Stock Island, Deputies Matt Dowling and Linda Kohout posted vehicles that were illegally parked and warned people sleeping in their vehicles. Deputies Todd Jones and Freddy Rodriguez made sure this downed sign on Little Torch was replaced. Thanks to Public Works for helping. In an effort to prevent vehicle burglaries, these signs were put up in at least 15 locations in the Lower Keys with the assistance of Jim Crane from Monroe County Public Works. The signs warn people not to leave valuables in their car and to lock car doors. Left to right, Deputies Jon Riggs, Donald Stulken, Lt. Donnie Catala and Jim Crane. Sgt. Linda Mixon assisted with finding appropriate locations for the signs. Weekly Rap Up - Page 5

Explorers spruce up school School Resource Officer Advisors and Explorer Posts 904, 905 and 906 got together and spruced up the paint in the parking areas around Plantation Key School in Islamorada this past weekend. Fueled by Dunkin Donuts coffee and power rings (also known as donuts) they all had a great time and performed a wonderful service to the school. Marathon Explorers took yearbook photos this week (on the left). They also met with U.S. Marine Sgt. Luke, who was on campus recruiting. Two explorer seniors, Lt. Yanelys Vergara and Captain Angel Muino will be entering the Marine Corp after graduation. Weekly Rap Up - Page 6
