Medical Assistant Prgram Western Technical Cllege Supplemental Infrmatin Curse Sequence and Delivery. This is a tw-term prgram. During the first term, the student cmpletes the basic r fundatinal curses. The first term schedule can be mdified t meet the student s needs. Sme students may take tw terms t cmplete the first term curses. Nte that the Clinical Prcedures 1 and Medical Labratry 1 curses must be taken at the same time. The same is true fr Clinical Prcedures 2 and Medical Labratry 2 curses. Taking general studies curses (English Cmp 1, Digital Literacy, and Medical Terminlgy) ahead f cre Medical Assistant curses will significantly help yu succeed in the prgram. If yu have taken and passed Bdy Structure and Functin r General Anatmy and Physilgy with a grade f C r higher, yu may test ut f Human Bdy in Health and Disease. The fee fr this is $100. The clinical experiences f the secnd term are where the student applies classrm cntent in the actual patient care setting. The first part f the term is spent in the classrm. The final five weeks f the term are cmpletely blcked fr clinical experience with the student at the clinic 40 hurs each week. January and September are currently the tw starting times fr Western s Medical Assistant Prgram. The September tw-term start wuld fllw the usual academic schedule with graduatin in April. The students starting the tw-term schedule in January wuld cmplete the prgram in December. Reliable Transprtatin. Yu will need reliable transprtatin t cmplete the requirements f clinical. The prgram utilizes clinical sites in the La Crsse area and thrughut the regin. Students are respnsible fr their wn expenses fr transprtatin related t their clinical site assignments. Clinical/Practicum. Students cmplete practicum experiences at a minimum f tw sites. The tw La Crsse and Onalaska clinics (Gundersen Health System and May Clinic Health System-Franciscan Healthcare) are the primary clinical sites fr the first part f the practicum experience, but numerus ther clinics within the regin are als used. All practicum experiences will be lcated in the Western Technical Cllege district and will be unpaid. During the practicum term, curses are cmpleted in the 10 weeks prir t the 5-week practicum experience at the end f the term. The Clinical/Practicum curse is five weeks in length and students will spend eight hurs a day, five days a week, when assigned t a clinical site. While mst days will begin at 8:00 a.m., sme labratry assignments may require 5:30 a.m. starts. Immunizatins and TB testing will be required at the start f the secnd term. CPR (Healthcare Prvider) is als required prir t yur practicum experiences. Due dates will be annunced by yur instructr.
MA Supplemental Infrmatin Page 2 State Licensure. The American Assciatin f Medical Assistants (AAMA) Certificatin Examinatin is ffered fllwing graduatin and the applicatin fee is $125. The fee f $125 is cllected at the end f the first term in rder t guarantee that yu will be able t take the certificatin exam right after graduatin. While this is nt a license, certificatin is stressed as mst clinics thrughut the natin hire nly Certified Medical Assistants (CMA). Expenses in Additin t Textbks A watch with a secnd hand will be required the secnd week f classes. Students will receive further infrmatin abut the unifrm requirements during the first week f schl. A unifrm, fluid resistant lab cat, Western patch and gggles are required but these can be purchased during the first term. The unifrm can be purchased at a lcal unifrm stre fr abut $30. The nametag is prvided fr each student and an extra may be purchased fr abut $5. The dispsable fluid resistant lab cat, Western patch, and gggles can be purchased at Western s Campus Shp fr abut $15. When yu purchase yur unifrm, dn t frget that yu will need gd white r black walking shes. A dual head stethscpe is required fr secnd term. A dual head stethscpe will cst abut $20-$50. While a bld pressure cuff is nt required, many students find it very useful. This will cst abut $20-$50. Psitive Backgrund Check. It is very imprtant that yu be hnest when cmpleting the backgrund check frm. Sme facilities may autmatically refuse a student they perceive t be less than truthful n the frm. If yur backgrund check reveals a past experience with the law, yu will be asked t meet with the Assciate Dean Jan Miksis t discuss the results f the backgrund check, and discuss difficulties that might arise frm securing a field placement. Yu will be asked t read and sign the Disclsure f Pssible Bar frm Practicum Experiences waiver. Fieldwrk sites have the right t refuse clinical placement t any student based n the backgrund check results. If yu are unable t secure a placement, yu will nt be able t graduate frm the prgram. It will be yur decisin as t whether r nt yu will begin/cntinue in the prgram. If yu want t cntinue yur educatin beynd the assciate degree, yu shuld cntact the apprpriate state licensing bard t ensure yu are license- r certificatin-eligible. Arrests r Charges after Backgrund Check Cmpleted. If yu are arrested r have new charges fllwing the cmpletin f yur backgrund check, yu must reprt them t Jan Miksis, Assciate Dean f the Medical Assistant prgram (608.785.9275), within five (5) wrking days. Failure t d s may result in dismissal frm the prgram. Immunizatins. Vaccines can prtect bth yu and the peple yu cme in cntact with in yur hme, at wrk r in the cmmunity. Immunizatins prvide preventative measures t reduce yur risk f cntracting serius diseases that affect yur health. T prtect bth yu and yur clients during yur fieldwrk curses, Western strngly suggests that yu btain a TB Test and the fllwing immunizatins after careful cnsultatin with yur healthcare prvider regarding risks and side effects: TDap, MMR, varicella, Hep B, and influenza. Immunizatins and TB testing will be required the secnd term prir t beginning clinical rtatins. Bdy Art and Piercings. In the Health & Public Safety Divisin, a student may display n bdy art r piercing that might be cnsidered ffensive. Mst emplyment settings have plicies that are

The wearing and displaying f jewelry in the health care r public safety setting is generally limited t wrist watches and wedding rings r small nn-dangling earrings.
